View Full Version : Ezra Sellers?

Probably best known for knocking out Carl Thompson. I personally think Ezra was one of the hardest punchers at Cruiserweight even, looking at how he sparked Thompson with one punch while a prolonged beating from David Haye couldn't even put Thompson on the canvas.

What makes this more impressive is that Sellers did this towards the end of his career, around when he stopped being active, and this was before Thompson would go on to beat Haye.

One of the reasons for that is probably the fact that Sellers was a legitimate heavyweight who boiled down to the Cruiser limit.

Anyway, I'm curious if anyone knows WHY Sellers only fought four times in the first four years or so of his career.

Did he go to prison?

Anyone ever see him fight? What did you think?

was he not a bible basher?

I think he decked the slick Johnny Nelson too, and put Thompson down a couple of times in a see-saw battle before really laying him out hard.

last I heard of him Enzo Maccarinellli and ****** was talking him up as a serious opponent.....the BBBC told them to fuck right off.

Yeah, the Thompson fight was, of course, a back and forth slugfest. Great stuff.

The final punch that sparked the ultra tough Thompson was a singular one though.

To be quite honest I know only of him through Thompson and Nelson. The thread may check his Boxrec - he fought Seldon on debut, I didn't know that. That would be an interesting 'curiosity' fight to check out.

Yeah, I'm trying to find some fights of his myself right now.

A cruiser fighting Bruce Seldon in their pro debut... Crappy deal, that one.

Not really a great move on his handlers part. Seldon 218, Sellars 200. Still, he had 10 pounds on Tyson. The good it did him...

The Thompson/Sellers fight remains one of the great modern, up-and-down shootouts. The last blow was short, sweet and dreadful at the same time.

Sellers was very unlucky against Nelson when he was punched directly, accidently of course, in the eye.

Sellers was a very religious and righteous man, he did give Thompson hell and he had an amazing fight with a comebacking Alex Stewart at heavyweight , knockdowns galore..

Ezzera was the man that Ike Ibeabuchi attacked in the gym for wearing a wedding band during sparring , he pulled a knife and stamped on Ezzeras leg almost breaking it and forcing Sellars out of a major fight..

Why did this bother Ike so much?

it was great opp. as we went 10 rounds over 5 sessions and his hands are clearly the fastest ive ever seen, still amazing, but his footspeed is lacking and a clear reason why he has changed his fighting style and takes more breaks and works off the ropes a lot. he kept this style up with me and fought in spurts, and flurried with some vicious body shots, knows how to change the speed and power of his punches very masterfully. he went 12 every session and barely anyone could land an effective head punch let alone a combo, also i was the only amatuer so i had to really earn my pay. i used strength inside fighting and worked the body and tried to finish to the head. roy clearly outfought me but i worked him hard and he appreciated my work and offered me a lot of advice and suggestions and was actively interested in my potential when i turn pro. very helpful and informative guy who shows his veteran professionalism. also on his last day sparring before the fight he really turned up the intensity and upped his workrate as i was always his 6th and 7th round guy. we exchanged a lot and he gave me my first ever knockdown from a liver shot that took my legs out without warning. i was up in 8 and it was the result of his nice flurries that he ended with hard body shots. all around great experience that i hope i can get another shot with a world class guy before i turn pro, possibly pavlik as he is only an hour and half from here and i know guys who have worked with him.

Great stuff, jeeeeeeez. Interesting take on his declined foot speed vs still great hand speed too, very interesting. What are your thoughts when he fights Calz?

Thanks for some superb insight.

You should slap him about 100 times a round to see if he's going to be able to handle it against Calzaghe.

i am strongly believing that roy has the style and enough pop to get to calzaghe, but as i stated earlier his legs are shot which will ultimately limit roys effectiveness throughout 12 rounds. my prediction is roy will have good success over the first 8 possibly tied 4-4 going into championship rounds but joe pulls it out 7-5 clear. this will show us a glimpse of what prime roy vs. joe would have been all about i believe, i think prime roy takes 8 maybe 9 rounds clearly against joe

Thanks for the prediction. I don't doubt you are spot on either.
