View Full Version : Apart from the Ottke temple shot
I know this might sound ridiculous to some and i'm not a massive Mundine nuthugger, but in all seriousness has Mandy ( that's from Josey) ever been in trouble chin wise in a fight???????
Mind you he hasn't really gone toe to toe or slugged it out like a Katsidis, but in all honestly i think Mundines is not that bad. He probably gets a bad rap cos his oldman had a glass jaw.
Sorry about another Mundine thread but there's not much doing on this thread lately and considering Kelly Pavlik has been talked about as a future opponent then i reckon is a relevant topic.
Will we see his chin tested now he's getting older and slower??

I think it's his old man who gets a bad wrap. Being stopped by punchers like Kahu Mahunga etc is no disgrace. He also fought well above his natural weight class on many occassions.

Chocs old man didn't really have a Glass chin as such imo , take a look at a couple of the guys he fought , Benny Briscoe , Carlos Monson (ATG ), Emmile Grifith another ,etc any of these three mentioned is a level way above anything his boy has fought imo and would have had him out of there in record time on each occasion had he ever fought @ that level , old man Mundine is one of Australia's finest exports whilst his boy has a country mile to go if he is to imitate his old man . is his chin up to it Kel ? No way as soon as Pavlik connects its good night Irene . :deal

Sorry to disagree...But Tony Mundine is a lowlife Cunt who was running a protection racket around the Redfern area until he hopped on his son's coat tails.
He was renowned in boxing circles for losing interest if he got hurt...
I witnessed a Sparring session between Mundine and Manni Vaka at McQuillans Gym......
Fair enough...Vaka was a Light heavy at the time...
Even though it was only a "Spar" Mundine couldn't help himself and dropped Manni...
Manni then got up and floored Mundine 3 times before Mundine did a "Charlie"...and quit....
Funny......Someone leaked a story the next day to the media about Mundine decking a Light/heavy.....But no mention was made of Mundine being floored...
Go figure....

Getting knocked unconscious by possibly the lightest hitting world champion of all time means that your chin is suspect, forever, period.
He also went down to relatively mediocre punchers in Nishydishwasher and plodding Manny Siaca. But going 12 rounds with 3 big hitters in Kessler, Green, and Echols without getting hurt goes along way to vindicating him.

I think he was proper hurt against Siaca and if that punch wasnt towards the end of the round he may have been in trouble.

Tony was into muscle for hire and standover work for other crims in the City aswell. Heard this off a lot of people.
An Uncle of mine was a Sgt at Arms for a minor motorcycle "club" and he worked doors at several places in the city in the 80's (Bikie membership was a lot greater back then apparently). He told me once he went to break up a fight across the road from one the joints he was working at but stopped short when he saw one of the particpants was Tony Mundine and that the "fight" was more one sided beating. He said he knew of the other bloke and more than likely he owed someone money who must have hired Tony to collect.

i dont slang people for how they make there money, its a tough world and we all have to do it some way, i work a 9-5 for some people they just cant do that, dont let tonys reputation outside ruin his great resume inside a truly awesome fighter who would of definately been up there in the belts and possibly pound for pound...

I think his chin is better than most think, but he does lack the willingness to cop a punch in order to deliver one, and is also very reluctant to mix it up.
The KD from siaca hurt him I think, because he pretty much ran from him for the rest of the fight after that.
Please enlighten me as to what is unintelligent and misinformed about saying that Anthony got knocked unconscious by Sven Ottke.

:good Look, I can see you're a little bit sensitive about issues relating to Mundine but the point I was making was that, yes, he has been hurt by several guys other than Svenie feather-fists. But more importantly the point is that having suffered one of the most humilating KOs in recent boxing history, he can never fully redeem himself. I find it baffling that you think that is stating the obvious as I would have assumed that you believe he could redeem himself.

i think his chin is ok, it doesnt get tested too many time but. look at the guys his been fighting lately, not many big punches. might tell u how his team feels about it. i dont think Crazy is the Ko king his record says he is.
and with choc i dont even know what weight class to talk about him fighting......... his a fuckin clown who has wasted his gifts.

He wont have much power at all up at Light Heavy...

according to his record he has been down three times. None more resounding that being KTFO by Ottke. His chin has to be described as suspect. Doesn't reflect on his ability though

I really think he has proved himself since and we can put the Ottke experience down to a combination of luck (on Ottke's part), fatigue, and complete inexperience on Mundines.
The telling factor I am concerned about though is the mental damage it may always reap. Against big hitters he may always fight tentatively and never let his hands go - which we have seen twice now against Kessler and Siaca.
He did well against Green, though I think he became extremely confident once he realised how predictable Green was on that night.
If he could bring this kind of attitude into a Pavlik fight and maintain it, he could well end up embarresing Kelly - I'm not holding my breath though.

I don't really know how you could say it was luck?! It was a decent short right hand that landed sweetly on the temple.

Well, the truth is that there is no such thing as luck, what I mean is that it was a few unique circumstances that occured at the same time - the factors of inexperience anmd fatigue are big players.
He has definitely been hit a lot harder since and withstood those shots without issue.

Maybe you've overlooked the fact that virtually nobody in this thread is synchronised with your opinion that the Ottke KO "makes his chin suspect forever period... bla bla bla"...
but i'll let that slip.
Nobody is saying he wasn't knocked out you dumbarse. Judging his chin by that KO for the rest of his career is what is in dispute here. If you feel that you can judge him on that basis then you must surely think Darchinyans chin is suspect forever as he was KO'd by that tysonesque Donaire, and Katsidis chin is suspect forever as that brute Graham Earl floored him... otherwise you are a hypocrite.

I wasn't going to get involved in this cause it's sooooo done to death. Until Anthony stands and trades willingly, his chin will be somewhat suspect. He's a great defensive fighter, but when he gets caught he can be hurt/dropped.
I don't really think that the Darchinyan example is that accurate, because Donaire can whack. Without looking at boxrec, in 20 odd fights I think he's had around 12 or 13 stoppages. The latest against the world class Maldonado. Katsidis' chin probably is suspect at a world class level at this point in time. However, like Anthony, he's fought a big puncher (Ganoy/Kessler) and survived. Jury is probably still out I guess.

lol. Now you're just getting confused. On the one hand you're telling me that I'm stating the obvious but then you're saying that my view isn't "synchronised" with most people's views. Wtf?
First off, I couldn't give a fuck whether my opinion is the view that most people have or not. If that's how you establish the validity of your own opinions mate then I think you have self-esteem issues that you should address. And secondly, I think you'll find that quite a few people agree that because of the Ottke incident Anthony Mundine's beard is rubbish. I can see several in this thread for starters.
But bringing those other KOs with Donaire etc into the equation I see the source of the confusion for you now. You're failing to grasp just how light a puncher Ottke was. And you're failing to take into account that it wasn't a flash knock-down my friend, it was out cold. That puts that incident in whole different realm to the one's you mentioned. But yes, now that you mention it, based on his last three fights Katsidis' whiskers may also be a little bit weak at the top level, but that's beside the point.

TBH Hmmm, this is why I haven't really posted here much since 2003. You end up in the same stupid arguments again and again with neither side giving a inch, yet at the end of the day I really don't give a fuck whether you agree with me or not ;)
Mundine's a fag, but I think it's testament to the guys sublime skills that he can go 36 rounds with 3 big hitters and not get stung.
But tbh I think this thread ended when Huricn said he'd seen Mundine go down in sparring to much lighter fighters. We're talking headgear and big gloves mate.

How about you give us an example?
Have you taken into consideration that in fights like against Monzon he had to lose plenty of weight (would do road runs wrapped in plastic) and that's going to make you struggle if your opponent is working you hard.
Comments like yours shouldn't be made unless you add some facts to back it up. :nono
