According to fightnews, Joe Calzaghe has informed the WBO that he is not vacating his WBO strap at SMW but rather plans to return to the weight after the Jones fight to defend his title again.

Could this mean that Joe will after all take on Pavlik after the Jones fight or is it a bullshit story?

No he just wants them to keep his title on ice so that he extends his record. That way he won't be forgotten about 5 mins after he retires.

Could well be right. He'll want a Lennox Lewis style retirement press conference.

I don't think that it is a bullshit story as such, I just don't think that he will defend again at SMW. Calzaghe is within a spit and fart of Louis' longevity record so won't want to give up his comfort WBO bauble without a struggle

So when does he break Louis record? I bet he'll amazingly change his mind after that happens.

YES!! Just read now that Joe says he might face Pavlik. He says it depends on how he performs against Jones.

Makes sense to me

I think it's rubbish mate at the moment - this is to keep his fans happy when he announces he's gonna fight in the States again.

He can carry on fighting at LHW but write letters to the WBO asking to push back his next mandatory defence of the SMW belt until 2014. Mario Veit may well be back at the top of the rankings by then.

Great news.

Very logical move by JC...I have said all along that he must feel that he is physically declining and perhaps wants a tester fight to see if his mediocre performance versus Hopkins was down to the opponent or more to do with Joe's skills eroding...

Why are people so negative all of a sudden anyway about him not fighting Pavlik? Don't we rag on boxers that don't know when to get out? The guy is 36 with a style not best suited to adapting to the onslaught of age...I commend him for realising that his time has come and hence the easy fight, or coming very soon.

If Calzaghe beat RJJ and then Kelly Pavlik, he will really go down as a legend.

Its gotta be in Wales though.

I hope he fights Pavlik. No other fight around 168 or 175 look too interesting right now. Even has RJJ fight is only worth watching because of the name value.

Everybody shits on the man for not fighting Kelly Pavlik then when he decides to keep his title and talks about the prospect of another fight at SMW, he takes even more pelters. It's a lose lose situation for Joe really.

He seems sensible enough to realize that his time at the top is coming to a end. In his last fight he didn't look as sharp and was not his usual self. Obviously this would have put doubt into his mind. The thing is, Hopkins makes anyone look bad and perhaps all Joe needs is a good solid performance against Roy Jones to get his spirits back up and get him mentally and physically prepared for one last major fight, against Pavlik in front of his home crowd at Cardiff.

Get off this mans case. There's more hate for Calzaghe on here than what you'd have found for blacks in Mississippi during the 60's.

I've only seen one person slate him for taking the Pavlik fight.

The fight would be a great win for Joe! Pavlik is a prime p4p top ten guy (possibly overestimated because of his defeat of Locket, but that doesn't matter). A win doesn't' jettison his resume out of the stratosphere, as Pavlik is no prime RJJ, Hopkins, Toney etc, but Pavlik could well go on to make further noises that makes him seen as such. It would be a great name to nail to the mast, and style wise I think Pavlik is ideal for Joe; he wins this one.

I rather see Calzaghe fight Froch at 168 than anyone else to be honest. But that will never happen.

agree with that - wanted that fight for ages - Calzaghe and ****** don't want to know - any excuse to avoid him - not worthy etc - then they have a big show at the millenium with thousands and the opponnet is the great Peter Manfredo Jnr - what a joke - someone like Froch is a much tougher opponnet - but thats the problem why make life more tougher for yourself fighting Froch when you can make the same money blasting away easy opponnets like Manfredo

A fight with Froch could have happened if Carl's career had progressed faster. Had he picked up a belt a couple of years back it would have been a great domestic unification battle. Things have just gone too slow for Carl and he's missed the boat on a fight with Joe.

Calzaghe's record can not be compared to Joe Louis

he held the undisputed heavyweight title - in the old era

Calzaghe made 20+ defences of a paper title - most of them in Cardiff - against alot of easy opponnets - Joes outstanding fighter - but he wasted much of his career in the comfort zone

if we gonna start judging how great a fighter is based on length of time and defences of a paper title then

Sven Ottke is one of the greatest fighters in the history of boxing

see how absurd that is
