I think we should all give the Calzaghe stuff a break.
It should be as black and white as this for all of us on either side of the divide:

- if he takes on Pavlik and beats him, he may have been the real deal all along and just never bothered proving it til the last few years of his career, and he has a right to be regarded as one of the elite boxers (say top 10) of his generation

- if he ends his career by beating up an over-the-hill former superstar and doesn't take the Pavlik challenge, or fights Pavlik and gets beaten, then I am inclined to state that 3 fights (Lacey, Kessler, and the poor performance and narrow 'win' v Hopkins) do not make a great career and that he never attained that elite status.

Do we agree on this gentlemen???

Alright, here are my thoughts on Calzaghe. I can't stand Calzaghe at all, I hate his style and the way he fights but the way he is treated by boxing fans is unbelievable. He can never do any good in their eyes. First he had to beat Lacy to prove himself, then Kessler, then Hopkins. He has done all 3 yet people still think he needs to prove himself against Pavlik or whoever. Give the guy a break. I wouldn't rate him that highly all time as his resume isn't spectacular, but he hasn't lost in forty-something fights and he has proved himself on the highest stage numerous times.

A guy with Calzaghe's achievements and consistancy and longevity as a champion sure isnt getting the respect and consideration due him. A thing I hear about a lot is the "slapping" bit. Well, neither Ali, Whitaker, Hopkins or Winky to name a few, were punchers, but they haven't been held to task about that as much as J.C. has. I predict that after whipping Jones and then Pavlik, Calzaghe will have a golden opportunity to exit the scene on top, undefeated. That will put his detractor's panties in a wad for sure.
