what an absolutly shameful non effort put in by sykes. how he has found 25 opponents worse than himself is beyond me. his purse should be withheld, even povetkin looked disgusted. old "opponents" like dave jaco and bobby crbtree get slated as tomato cans bit at least those guys tried, even when outclassed. retire, sykes.now

Sykes usually gives trouble for many. However, Povetkin is a good fighter, but not ready for Vlad yet.

I think Povetkin had more trouble sitting through that horribly sung American anthem than he had going through Sykes. I also thought Sykes made two pretty clear intentional headbutts in the 2nd. The referee warned in sign language but they looked pretty blatant to me.

He was beyond a disgrace. I thought he was a decent fighter in the past, but obviously he should never get near a boxing ring again. I hope they withheld his purse.

There were at least some 20 opponents out there for Povetkin to pick who would give him a real fight and help prepare for Wlad.
Instead he prefered to go the safe crappy way, choose a crappy opponent and have a crappy fight.
It worked exactly as planned.

To say that Sykes is a disgrace is really stupid. In the corner he repeated again and again "I cannot do it!". For whatever reasons he was suffering from a psychological blockade.
His behaviour resembled Luan Krasniqi's in his fights against Tony Thompson and Saleta. It would be interesting to know why this happens and what can prevent such failure.
I didn't realize that, but the fact remains, if you're that psychologically fragile, you shouldn't have taken the fight in the first place. I suppose you could break down in the ring ala' Oliver McCall, but c'mon, it's not like this was Sykes's pro debut, he's been around against good comp before. He chose not to behave like a fighter.

The opponent choice was fine. It would have been stupid to take a dangerous fight when you have the Wlad fight locked up. Sykes was a good choice, gave Povetkin something to train for, kept him active, and gave him time in the pro ring under the lights. No one knew Sykes would be THAT bad.

can't fault Povetkin. Sykes didn't come to fight, let alone win. Nothing Alex could do. Its like when Akinwande hugged Lewis to death, or the second crying McCall fight. Not much when you can do when the other guy is not really there.
I agree with the thread title...however, Sykes may have simply broken down mentally after seeing what he was up against, I am not sure.

I agree that Sykes disappointed me,too. I did not wait from him that he won the fight but I was waiting from him a fight which he fought with his heart. I Could wanted to watch diiferent fighter against Povetkin.

Sykes is another pathetic American heavy weight. Povetkin needs better tests before stepping in with Wlad but then again a loss would not be the end of the world, it would certainly be better than another half dozen fights against jobbers of the Sykes quality.
