It seems to me once there was a fighter who lost and made no excuses but I can't recall who it was? Anyone?

I dunno, Mosley claimed he was robbed against Wright in the rematch, and the first loss to Wright was because felt like he had "a monkey on his back". He also blamed the first Forrest loss on the headbutt and said he won the rematch.

Jack Dempsey was known as a gracious loser. Riddick Bowe was very gracious after losing his title in a close loss to Evander Holyfield. Tommy Hearns was gracious. I think he did say he disagreed with Davey Pearl's stoppage, but that's not really an excuse.

Yeah, but what about his other losses or poor performances?

It's common to hear from fighters that " I lost to better fighter tonight". But you can't help them if they mention the factors why they lost. They have to HYPE themselves up for the next fight.

Holyfield has been a good example of not making excuses to credit the fighter.

George Foreman, Antonio Tarver, Oscar De La Hoya, Angel Manfredy, Evander Holyfield.

I agree with you for the most part.. Although Oscar was making a fuss about robbery after the second Mosley fight. I had Mosley slightly winning but its easy to understand why he thought he won, though saying something was fishy was out of line i think. He just got the worse end of a close fight that time around.

I liked Oscar's "bad oysters" excuse.

Still, my favorite is Big George's "I was about to knock Ali out but I got distracted by seeing my friend in the audience betray me by rooting for Ali and it ruined my concentration" excuse.

He had about a dozen excusses for that loss. The one you pointed out is one of them, as is he was drugged, he was dehydrated, he was hurt before training, the ropes were loose, bad advice from the trainer and on it goes. So many that he could have wrote a book about it.oh wait he did...:yep

Kostya Tszyu

'Hatton was better than me in every way tonight.'

The guy was a champion even in defeat ... and that was a fight that any other fighter could have made excuses with (if you're gonna count the dodgy ref, rabbit punches, excessive holding and worst low-blow I've ever seen)

I was very impressed with Tszyu after that fight. His attitude was a credit to the sport. To stand in the ring immediately after the fight in the other guy's hometown, take the mic and praise him and tell all his fans that he was the man, but their boy had just taken the title from him fair and square and they should be proud of their new champion, that takes balls. He could have bitched and moaned, most would have disappeared, but he wanted to give Ricky the praise he deserved, and he showed real, genuine class. Every spectator in the stadium would have walked out of there a big Zoo fan, I bet.

A lot of the time, they are asked RIGHT AFTER a decision loss. In the heat of the moment and disappointment. And some genuinely think they did win. They aren't watching the same fight as you and being told who's winning by TV (since most of you NEED THAT!)

Read his autobiography "By George", released in the 90s. Unfortunately, I am not joking.

George also claims he was robbed against Holyfield in that book.

Foreman claimed to have been drugged for the ali fight.

Tarver claimed to have been drugged for the hopkins fight.

Oscar De la hoya threatened law suitsse he was robbed

Holyfield.....well his excuses can go on for miles:think

Geez, wasn't it obvious?

You only have to go down a few posts to see for sure that I was joking.

There was also the busted eardrum and HGH-itis, I mean hepatitis.

Not only was he quoted as saying he won the FIRST Lewis fight, but he repeatedly said (after saying he was affected by leg cramps) that "the judges opinions is what matter, don't nobody else opinion matter none".

Then after losing the rematch, Holyfield says "everyone knows I won the fight".

When Chagaev beat Valuev recently, Valuev made no excues, and said The better man won, tonight. :good

There are many who take a loss with dignity, but this one stuck out in my mind.

I'm willing to believe that Mike Tyson made no excuses for losing to Buster Douglas initially but after a few minutes of listening to Don King he quickly changed his tune and went along with the program and blamed the referee for the long count. Behind closed doors and out of the public's view I do believe that Tyson would be willing to concede the fact that he lost like a man. However, he was very easily manipulated so the public version we got in front of the media was that of a Don King puppet.

Bernard Hopkins after his 1st Taylor loss said that it's not like when he knew he lost like when he fought Roy...so this kind of credits Roy. Also Joppy in his locker room interview after the Tito fight...calling him relentlesss and not knowing he could hit like that.

I agree that he did take his 2 defeats with dignity but did say he thought the bout got stopped early against mcCall, and felt he was underdone before the rahman fight...

I aint a lewis fan but he did take defeat better than most fighters..

Especially considering they were against huge underdogs and by k.o.

It was an entirely legitimate opinion, that he wasn't given a chance to continue. He was definately hurt, but considering it was his first pro knockdown, he handled it very well. He had enough presence of mind to look directly at the ref and tuck his gloves up under his chin, which showed good composure under the circumstances. Maybe he would have gotten knocked out twenty seconds later, but I think he could have bullshitted his way out of it. That's the way she goes though I guess.

In the biggest most hyped fight in flyweight history, Humberto "Chiquita" Gonzales had pretty much had his way with Michael Carbajal for 6 rounds, even dropping and hurting Carbajal twice.......
.....suddenly and unexpectedly, Gonzalez got caught and knocked cold by a Carbajal combination in the 7th.....

.....right afterward in the ring while Gonzales was interviewed, Ruben Castillo who was interviewing Gonzales was handing Gonzales on a silver platter an excuse that everything was coming so easy for Gonzales that he just got careless and caught by Carbajal......
.....in essence, Castillo was almost putting words into Gonzales' mouth......
......I'll never forget the class Chiquita Gonzales exhibited in stomping Castillo's assumption that Chiquita simply got careless and Carbajal got lucky......Gonzales immediately interrupted Castillo and said, "nothing of the sort, he caught me, he dropped me, and it's just too bad, he beat me fair and square!"
Rarely is that kind of brute honesty exhibited in the ring by a fighter right after being KO'd in a fight he was up to that point dominating.

Chiquita gave Michael Carbajal his moment in the sun, and gave him all the credit a fighter deserves after winning a big fight!

Humberto "Chiquita" Gonzales was all class!
