Did he have the ability to have been one of the greatest cruiserweights in history, or am I overrating the guy??

Hide was a fast talented fighter with heavy hands. His chin was horrible though and that was his downfall. But even so, he was a OK HW, and a Crusier his big weakness in taking a punch would be lessened obviously. Hide would definently capture at least one belt and possibly even get quite a few title defenses before he got railed.

He could win a title Hide.

His chin wasnt horrible..... Other than Klit and Bowe he's only been stopped once (not including the headbutt farce) and in the return fight he Ko'ed the guy in one. Thats not that bad in nearly 50 fights. The manner of his knockouts though does suggest his chin was a bit sub par. Had he stuck to his more natural cruiserweight I doubt he's have had the same problems. He would have been a world CW champ for sure and is still likely to be as he is well capable of KOing anyone in the division. Top flight fighters will stand a good chance of KOing him of course but I'd favour him to beat a fighter like Enzo.

ATG CW material? No. He's more the sort of guy that would have a belt for a bit, lose it, comeback and gain another, lose it etc without ever managing to dominate the division.

I agree with Uppercut83, i would love to see Hide v Enzo. Hopefully Hide wins his court case with Frank ******, they come to some agreement to enable this fight to happen, Hide is still one of the more entertaining and funniest fighters out there.

I pretty much said the same thing as you did except different wording. His chin was certainly well below average for HW.

Yes he would have been awsome. He should have done it at cruiserweight before giving the heavies a try but credit to Hide for stepping up and testing himself against much bigger men.

He has always been a really mouthy git though.
About 10 years ago I used to work with some doormen from a private security firm and one of them told me how he met Herbie Hide at some gig and Hide started mouthing off at him for no real reason at all and was all ready to lay in. Fortunately they didn't go off, but this doorman was a real hard nut also and weighed about 20 odd stone.

Well one punch would have been all it needed to shut Herbie up for at least ten seconds :rofl

Hide has been in more fights with doormen than I can count.

Always on the winning end? I've met some truly frighteningly hard doormen in my time..

Can anyone confirm what Herbie's legal troubles in the UK are?
Is he allowed back witout being arrested yet?
I don't think Frank or Enzo will take the fight anyway, especially after Haye.

I think its mainly not turning up to court appearances on various driving and public order charges.

What do you think? A heavyweight champion of the world with bare fists vs frightening door man? Are you a betting man?

Yes. He held the WBO heavyweight title.

In that case he wasn't a world heavyweight champion :deal

He was heavyweight champion of Sports Network and Chumpsville :deal

When you're talking about really hard-hitting guys with bare fists it's really a question of who gets in the first punch.

He could have perhaps done something at cruiser - been very good - but at the time cruiser was very lowly regarded. It was seen as nothing but a stepping stone to the heavies; If a stepping stone at all (a bit of a nothing division). All the money was in the heavies.... had he not moved he could well have achieved something of considerable note at the lower weight... having said that, at the time cruiser-weight belts held very little kudos...
