Affliction: Fedor vs arlovski set for Oct 11th

LAS VEGAS – Fedor Emelianenko will defend his newly won World Association of Mixed Martial Arts heavyweight championship belt on Oct. 11 against Andrei Arlovski in the UFC’s backyard.

Affliction’s second MMA promotion will be at the Thomas & Mack Center on the UNLV campus, in the shadow of the UFC’s corporate offices, according to a venue official.

Affliction made its promotional debut last Saturday at the Honda Center in Anaheim, Calif., with Emelianenko submitting ex-UFC heavyweight champion Tim Sylvia in just 36 seconds.

Affliction vice president Tom Atencio, who said Tuesday he hoped to nail down a site for his second show by the end of the week, could not be reached for comment Wednesday. But arena director Daren Libonati, who is a big MMA supporter, confirmed that Emelianenko will be back in his building.

Libonati was instrumental in bringing the now-defunct PRIDE Fighting Championship to the U.S. for the first time on Oct. 21, 2006, with a show at Thomas & Mack that featured Emelianenko defending his heavyweight title against Mark Coleman.

“We’re really excited to have Affliction in the building and particularly to have Fedor and all those other great names,” Libonati said. “I remember working so hard with all those people at PRIDE and the ultimate goal was to put on a show (at Sam Boyd Stadium, UNLV’s football stadium) where the PRIDE champions would have defended their titles against the UFC champions.

“That’s what we were working toward in those two (PRIDE) shows we did back then, but it never worked out. We always want to bring big events here, and any time you have Fedor in your building you have a big event.”

Libonati said a formal announcement of the fight card would come later in the week.

On another note....Fedor will also fight in japan on NYE . Either against Overeem or Crocop. (depends on who'll win the fight)...I think it'll be for the hw DREAM belt.

or maybe he'll fight against Couture but i doubt it. Whatever happens , we already know that he'll fight in japan on NYE.

One hand I agree with you, Arlovski is Top class fighter and it would be nice to see him on a succesful route before getting destroyed by the "Emperor." On the other hand Affliction is matching up the best fighters and not best vs. nobodys, and that is what entertainment should be all about.

Yeah that is a good run. But it would be cool for him to win 3 more and win big...KO Sylvia in a rematch now he is fighting more aggressively again.

I like both fighters. It amazes me that the followers of sports Cannot analyze anything. I mentioned this fight and they were saying that Arlovskie is just a washed up UFC fighter and the same for Tim If he is not fighting in the UFC he just isn't anything. I tried to tell them that Fedor has defeated the UFC champion. They seem to not want to recognize anyone but Randy. I said that if you are a Randy coulture fan you better hope that this fight doesn't happen because it will destroy your belief system. I just donot think that they understand

A really have no interest in Fedor fightin Crocop or Overeem. I can't believe people are now touti9ng Overeem as a good fighter worthy fo being in the top 10. Crocop is done imo, no longer has the heart for fighting, not to mention this fight is just a retread.

If Fedor is fighting on NYE, I hope its against Kharitonov, who is, I believe, a Dream fighter.

I think it will be a very competative fight, Sylvia was a stationary target perfect for Fedor's bombs. Syvia is no stranger to be knocked down....even Couture dropped him but couldn't finish him.....Fedor obviously was able to Finish Tim with the choke qiuckly.

AA has decent boxing and footwork and is alot harder to hit I'm sure he would move out of Danger if Fedor flurries....no like Sylvia who just stood there like a punching bag.

I like this matchup a lot. Finally we are getting to see Fedor against guys that were top UFC heavyweights at some point. If he fights Couture and Barnett at some point in the next year, he will have made up for some poor match making in the past. If he can win those three fights, he will cement himself as the current GOAT, as far as I'm concerned.

i'm sure most would agree:good, it's good to see him fight again so soon, it looks like he's making up for lost time. fighting Sylvia, AA and either Barnett or Couture that close together deserves props from me.....And I was on the Fedor hate wagon in the last couple years because of his competition and activeness.
