James DeGale can cause people problems with his reach and switch hitting ability so he could perhaps pick up a medal. Frankie Gavin aswell as he obviously picked up a gold at the Worlds and he's very quick on his feet and with his handspeed. Joe Murray was the first to qualify and used to spar alot with Khan I know, maybe he could have a chance aswell along with Price and possibly Jeffries.

Gavin, Price and Saunders have the best chance to medal IMHO.

Well I only really know about Tony Jeffries, he has a burger van up here in sunderland he is a very dedicated boxer , a few of my mates have spared with him and say he is really athletic and accurate in the ring , i havent had the pleasure of sparring with him yet but hope I do soon! but he has a few weakness's which can be exploited but hopefully can be a outsider in these olympics

In the last Olympic cycle every member of this team has beaten an Olympic, a World or a European medal winnner. DeGale recently beat the Olympic and Val Barker winner from Athens. BJ Saunders roasted the red-hot Cuban. In the last ten months they have changed the way amateur boxing nations look at Britain. The team, as I said on yesterday's show, has been disgracefully ignored by the Olympic broadcaster.
And what I like best is that they have all told the lawyers and promoters and fight fixers to stick their 50 grand offers where the sun will never shine. The promoters have wheeled out the..."If you lose out there you will be stuck" line. Well, that was true but this mob can come back and get in the line for the funding that will become available for 2012. Lose out there and come back and make 50 grand a year as an amateur boxer. Not a bad option. But with Haye, Calzaghe, Hatton, ******, Hobson, Hennessy and Audley's firm chasing the Olympic Eight there will not be any shortage of offers.
Adios.

I'd be surprised if we dont get three medals or more from that lot.
As Gaz has already said Gavin, Price and Saunders are very impressive. And all the others have a least an outside chance. Its the best olympic boxing team I can remember us putting out.

I think the entire group has a decent chance of a medal. All are on hot form which is really important. But when you look at some of the guys who they will be facing the task looks a lot less simple. I think in all honesty we will be happy to get three bronze medals. Anything more and I will call it a great success.
Any idea on who will be broadcasting the fights?
Our captain David Price is a good figther and should have confidence going into the competition however he needs to be not drawn in with Timurziev or Cammarelle, I think he has the beating of the Cuban entry.

At a guess, they will be on the BBC. I'm not totally sure of that though.

Yeah, it is the BBC. They have rights to the entire Olympics.

Yeah, it is the BBC. They have rights to the entire Olympics.
Hopefully that means that all of the boxing will be shown on BBC Interactive so we won't miss a thing .
I'll be keeping a close eye on the 8 British entries, aswell of course as the 5 Irish ones .

Out of the Irish lads that qualified, who are the best bets to get a medal?
I know sod all about amateur boxing, but I hear Price and obviously Gavin are good chances. I'll predict 2 silvers and a bronze.
On a side note, that Khalid Yafai looks BIG for a flyweight.

Personally, I'm really looking forward to the Olympic boxing, and will have a small wager here and there. I do need to gem up on it a bit more between now and then though.

Out of the Irish lads that qualified, who are the best bets to get a medal?
Well Darren Sutherland and Ken Egan are the most experienced , and both had good wins over non other than James Degale and Tony Jeffries respectively at the European Union Championships recently but it's very hard to predict .
Most people here seem to fancy John Joe Nevin as he's improved so much over the past year or so and has the perfect style for the computer system .
Some think Paddy Barnes has a chance as he's the only one who actually qualified from the World Championships and gave Zou Shiming(the strong favourite for Gold) a decent contest when going out in that one .
However Barnes is the most inconsistant on the team and lost his EU final fairly widely to Pal Bedak, who himself is a pretty good fighter but if you were hoping for a medal from Barnes the 23-8 loss to Bedak wasn't a positive result .
John Joe Joyce is the least likely to medal imo, a decent fighter and more consistant than Barnes or Sutherland but just hasn't got the quality for a medal .
Despite most people in Ireland(that I've talked to) favouring Barnes and Nevin's chances it simply has to be Sutherland or Egan for me as both are top 10 in their weight class, highly experienced and have very good power so if they're getting outclassed they do have some hope of turning it around .
A huge amount will depend on the draw and with 8 boxers at least some of the Brits are guaranteed a nice one but tbh I wouldn't bet on any Irish boxer medaling in Beijing .
The high performance programme has only been in 4 years and has clearly worked as like Britain we only had 1 Olympian 4 years ago but I think we'd have to be very lucky with the draw or have our guys at their absolute best to have a chance at medalling .

I would definetly say that Sutherland and Egan are top 8 fighters at thier weight at amature level so with the help of a good draw they could both be in serious medal contention.

The boxing will be shown on BBC interactive.
Though if our lads go far, probably on the main channel.

how did they get billy joe and bradley saunders to adopt eactly the same position? :think
anyway, i'm backing gavin, billyjoe, price and degale to make the semis. if any of these guys win a medal and turn pro straight after, they could become the new poster-boys / hypejobs of british boxing

You lot will probarbly have better medal prospects in 2012. Seems like you've already got some decent fighters at the moment and if the draw is kind to them there is every chance they;ll pick up a medal.

Price getting some hype. From the BBC -
========================================================
ABA chief tips Price for success
David Price will captain the GB boxing team in Beijing
Amateur Boxing Association chief Paul King believes Liverpool's David Price can win one of the two medals Team GB are targeting at the Beijing Olympics.
Great Britain have eight boxers involved in China, their largest team since the Barcelona Games in 1992.
King told BBC Radio Merseyside: "By London it will be ratcheted by another one or two, but in the short term it's two medals out of Beijing.
"I think potentially David Price could be one of those medallists."
King, who hails from Liverpool, believes fellow Merseysider Price is beginning to fulfil his potential.
The 25-year-old is appearing in an Olympic Games for the first time in China, having missed out on qualification for Athens four years ago.
King added: "He's a super-heavyweight and they don't mature until late on as everybody knows.
"I think David is just about on the cusp of starting to grow into what could be a fantastic super-heavyweight, now and in the future."
Despite having impressive international records, Price's fellow Liverpudlians Neil Perkins and Stephen Smith did not qualify for the Olympics.
They can all perform and where there was one Russian years ago there's 14 out there now who can actually do it
ABA chief executive Paul King
King said he has some sympathy for the talented duo: "Unfortunately qualification is a very tough round of boxing.
"The problem in Europe is although we get the largest quota, you're competing against 49 nations now.
"The [former Soviet] states break up into 14 countries, the Balkan states another nine.
"They can all perform and where there was one Russian years ago there's 14 out there now who can actually do it."

good section on olympic boxing in this months Boxing Monthly.
has profiles on the british team and grades their chances of winning a medal...
khalid yafai, 19, flyweight, Medal prospects: B
joe murray, 21, bantamweight, Medal prospects: A
frankie gavin, 24, lightweight, Medal prospects: A+
brad saunders, 22, lightwelterweight, Medal prospects: A
BJ Saunders, 18, welterweight, Medal Prospects: A
james degale, 22, middleweight, Medal Prospects: A
tony jeffries, 23, light-heavyweight, Medal Prospects: A
david price, 25, superheavyweight, Medal Prospects: A
a little generous with the gradings I think, as to me a grade A means they are more likely than not to win a medal. i mean it would be amazing if 7 out of 8 came back with medals, but just not very likely.
For anyone with a Sky box, BBC will have all the Olympic boxing coverage live on interactive starting on Saturday at 6:30am.

I've been very nonplussed about this Olympics, but I've watched the documentaries on BBC about the athletes preparing for the games the last few nights and I'm well keyed up now. That poor heptathlete girl who injured her ankle, what a choker. These folk work their god damn knackers off.
And I think it'll show a side of modern China that many didn't realise existed. I think I'm getting all filled up with Olympic spirit.
The rowing should be quality, we could piss the 4's but then again we could flop dreadfully, the young diver is incredible - I will surely shed a tear if he does well - and I obviously knew about the boxing squad
I know jack shit about amateur boxing but I'll follow this very very keenly, can't wait

Jessica Ennis. I really like her, she always comes across well in interviews, seems a really grounded girl. She is also quite attractive. Not my type, but there is something about her.
So harsh to get injured when she did. She had a genuine chance at a medal too.

seriously that is such bullshit - no one give a flyin fuck about rowing - only cos that long streak of piss won five golds was there any coverage in the UK - no one else gives a toss about that no mark of a sport - same goes for track cycling - I'd rather watch paint dry.
Anyway back to the boxing.
I can only see one medal coming from both the Irish and British teams and thats for Frankie - and I doubt that will be a gold either - hopin I am wrong on that score!

You are, unfortunately. How the fuck can Gavin not make the weight? It isn't as though the championship was announced a month back, he has known about this date for years. If it is a weight problem then the conditioning coach needs sacking.......I just think that there is more to this story than meets the eye.

I really like Pricey and fingers crossed he'll win a bronze at least. Unfortunately I can't see him doing much as a pro(of course he may never turn pro). His style reminds me a little of our bronze medalist at Super Heavy from 1984 Games,Bobby Wells(remember him?) He turned pro and retired with a record of 3-2

"Frankie Gavin, the world amateur lightweight champion who had to leave the Olympics after failing to make the lightweight limit, will meet Gareth Williams, the lawyer who acts for Joe Calzaghe and Ricky Hatton, to make plans for his future as a professional. He is expected to turn professional in the next few weeks, most likely at light-welterweight, the same division as Hatton. Gavin has also been in negotiation with several promoters, as far afield as Golden Boy Promotions in the United States. "
