NEWS FLASH
Arena inks defected Cuban stars!
Arena Box-Promotion, which made big news by signing the three Cuban Olympic gold medalists who defected last December, has done it again. Two-time Olympic bantamweight gold medalist Guillermo Rigondeaux and world amatuer welterweight champion Erislandy Lara, who both defected from the Cuban team last week in Rio de Janeiro have signed five year deals with the Hamburg-based promotional company. Within the next four weeks, the two boxers will arrive in Hamburg.
"I can't reveal where the athletes are currently, for understandable reasons," said Arena boss Ahmet Öner. "The fact is, however, is that it takes time to arrange the visas, as well as the residence and work permits. Of course we will present the young fighters to the public upon their arrival in Hamburg. I'm already looking forward already to that day."

Arena: Rigondeaux and Lara sign 5-year-contracts
[Only registered and activated users can see links]
Hamburg, July 26th, 2007 - All speculations come to an end: Two-times Olympic champion Guillermo Rigondeaux and world amateur welterweight champion Erislandy Lara who had left their national team during the Pan-American Games in Rio de Janeiro signed 5-year-contracts with Hamburg based arena Box-Promotion.
arena-CEO Ahmet Öner proudly stated that “the most talented boxers in the world fight for arena. Our stable looks into a golden future.”
Record-breaking Rigondeaux won 243 of his 247 amateur fights including titles at the Olympic Games 2000 and 2004 as well as World Championships 2001 and 2005. Like his fellow countrymen Odlanier Solis who had already signed with arena early this year, the 26-year old Cuban has been “hunted” by international promoters for years. Öner: “Rigondeaux is an exceptional talent. I am sure that nobody in the world can beat him..”

Reigning world amateur welterweight champion Lara is only 24 years of age and will probably compete in the middleweight division. Öner: “As all of our Cuban boxers he is a jewel who will be the man to beat in his weight class.”
Within the next four weeks Öner’s new stars are expected to arrive in Germany. Öner: “I can’t reveal where they are right now for understandable reasons but I am already looking forward to the day when they finally arrive in Hamburg. Of course, we will present them to the public as soon as they get here.”

Tom forgive my ignorance but who is Tony Gonzalez? That guy was managing Solis, Gamboa and Barthelemy when they were in Miami and he negotiated with different promoters.
I dont think, that he made this deal, too. Because Rigon and Lara deflected in Rio, Brazil.

Yes, they are all top prospects ... but will they excel? There are two things to consider: 1st - Öner for sure exploited them so they have bad contracts. Sooner or later there will be trouble about the conditions.
2nd - as soon as they get considerable money they will start to spend money and as they are totally green they will spend the money for the wrong things: cars, parties, drugs, and last not least junk food.
So don't expect too much.

We already can scrtach 2 of them because they are gone back to Cuba...and about them having signed bad contracts: false - all of them signed million-dollar contracts, but you are right, they're already throwing it out of the window and aren't that anxious to train...

Lockdown for Cuban Team?
Wednesday, August 8 2007
VOA
Cuban leader Fidel Castro has announced he might bar his country's boxers from competing in the upcoming world championships in Chicago and other Olympic qualifying events to prevent possible defections. In a column that appeared in the Communist Party newspaper Wednesday, Castro described boxing promoters trying to get Cuban fighters to defect as "mafia sharks lurking about in search of fresh meat." The 80-year-old dictator also said "Cuba will not sacrifice one bit of honor, nor any of its ideas, for Olympic gold medals." Castro added that Cuba is analyzing all possible alternatives to avoid defections, including changing its boxing roster or not sending any delegation at all. Cuba wins most of its medals at major international events in boxing. Two of Cuba's top fighters defected during the Pan-American Games in Brazil last month. They were later arrested by Brazilian authorities for overstaying their visas and sent back to Cuba.

Arena will surely covet those 3 Cubans that they have. They can build those guys and in the meantime build up publicity. And perhaps get some of their 'name' fighters like Hide and Gomez big fights.
Is there any proof that Gamboa is in Miami? Or was this just made up?
