Big Frank names the date on his next fight 5mins after his win, yet waits over a month to name his opponent, typical. :deal

It does seem odd - perhaps that is part of the grand plan to only give an opponent five weeks to train.

I heard ****** is pushing the idea of Sean Hughes but Khan is not too confident.
Read somewhere that we should know by Wednesday.

This is all rather reminiscent of Hatton's WBU reign of terror. Wouldn't surprise me if Dennis Holbaek Pedersen is brought in.

Current fans have never had it so good; thanks to the likes of boxrec promoters cannot throw gross mismatches at you.
And Amir has not had any gross mismatches; if you want to see a gross mismatch then watch Bruno/Gardner or Hide/Davis to see what I mean.;)

You cant fault ****** or Khan imo.
If Khan had it his way he would of allready had his world title shot.But....
Khan is not ready yet and if he doesnt get his defence sorted and get stronger sparring partners he is going to get knocked so to put him with world quality fighters will be a mismatch.
****** is doing the right thing taking it slowly. Khan has made little progression since the olympics and hopefully his new trainer will take him to the next level so that he can step up and fighter world class fighters.
The best thing to do is find a fighter that will be a good learning experience for Khan.

Perhaps they are not gross mismatches but when you have a fighter that, his promoters claims, is already "beyond European level" it's only natural to expect a little better than blown up featherweights.

Youve got to keep youre confidence up and aim for the top. No promoter who aims to get his fighter a world title one day is going try and deflate his fighter.

trainer or no trainer khan isnt going anywhere on the world stage even with a winky wright defence if some 1 slips in a decent enough shot hes out. The least he can do is fight jhon murray or romanov

It is called hype; it is what a good promoter does; maximum money for minimum risk.;)

Look at his age though. Theres no problem with taking it slowly. Theres no need to fight top level fighters too early and get knocked out. There is still a lot that needs to be improved. The new trainer is a step in the right direction.

You don't improve by fighting the same types of fighter every single time, none of which can punch. Gomez is the only guy that offered something different, and he was old and past his peak weight.
Infact, Khan is more likely to stagnate like this.

Age has very little to do with anything.
At 21 Roberto Duran was at Madison Square Garden brutalising one of the finest fighters that this country has ever produced to gain a world lightweight title.

There is nothing wrong with bringing a guy through slowly if he is actually gaining good experience in the ring, in different venues against different kinds of fighters.
AND - not bleating on about being 'ready for a world title' and 'being above European level now' whilst shamelessly ducking every leading lightweight in the country.
Recent example
Ricky Hatton fought 21 times before winning the British title. He fought in America three times, Germany once and all around the UK - against different kinds of fighters - bums, boxers, punchers, brawlers, southpaws etc etc.
Khan has fought 18 times, and other than Gomez, is yet to face anything other than upright, boxer types - the majority of which are feather fisted. Other than Gomez and Limond - it could be said that they were there simply to make Khan look good. Yet to fight abroad, yet to fight on a big bill, yet to do anything of note.

What can be said about his destruction of Earl who gave Katsidis a real challenge?
Beeston Brawler
07-28-2008, 12:24 PM
He did give Katsidis a challenge, but took a real severe beating in the process - and ought to give the game up.
It was a good performance from Khan - but where was the increase in level of competition?
Nowhere - that's where is was.
The Yanks bring fighters through so much better than we do because they match them properly - not just pad their records meaninglessly. They then don't learn sufficiently and cop a beating at the highest level.
Other than Hatton and Calzaghe, who has followed the 'standard British way' and succeeded consistently at the top level. Answer.....
Nobody.
Please note - David Haye and Lennox Lewis were brought through rather differently IMO.

I just don't get the obsession with the undefeated thing. It has not done Haye badly at all - in fact like Nigel Benn before him it has probably taught him more than winning!
I thought Earl and Limond were good starters for Khan but as you said he didn't build on them. I think Khan is slightly a victim of his own fame. Casual Boxing fans will see him as the golden boy and it could be for their benefit that he is looked after to give this idea of invincibility.

So, was Boxrec not around when Enzo Macc fought Bobby Gunn? I don't think the majority of Khan fans even know what Boxrec is, let alone give a toss about the quality of opponent for their boy.

He's made no progress because he wimped out from basing himself in the US immediately after the Olympics and has now wimped out again.
A kid who can get a Silver medal in a tough division aged 17 must have some talent to work with, there must have been interest in him from the US and he could certainly have got it if he went looking for it. But no, like Hamed he wanted to stay close to mommy in Bolton.
Floyd Mayweather and De La Hoya were fighting world class opponents by the time they were 21 because they were sparring with guys who themselves were world class and had trainers who were world class and they put in the grind to make the most of their talents.
Khan just wants to be a celebrity boxer by the looks of things.

Well, Fewkes fits the bill. He's a bit more than a genuine lightweight, feather fisted, and has been in with absolutely nobody. Perfect....trouble is I think that he is scheduled to fight Martin Gethin in September where I believe that he will be soundly beaten.
