We'll see.Often amateur heros can't transfer their success to the pros.It is a different game.Remember The 7 time world amatuer champion from Cuba, the heavyweight, Gonzalez? He got ktfo by Bowe, and then a past his prime Witherspoon.Hold off on the parade of roses for now.

What's this bullshit about Gonzales again? Jorge Luis Gonzales was an okay amateur, nothing more. I just don't get why people make it sound like he was a big amateur fighter or something, he was not. Gonzales didn't win a single world championship. There was only one fighter who won six world championships and that was Felix Savon.

it's easy to fight like that when you don't need to keep some reserve for a 12 rounder

First of all Guillermo is not the top boxer of the Cuban tean, second he will be 27 in Sept and for his weight class he needs quick results now as a pro, it will take him at least one year to develop into a Pro fighter, if not he will go the same way that Diosbelys Hurtado did......it is not guarantee that he will dominate , he is in a competitive division...I wish him well...and hope he is succesful but to call him the next big thing is foolish...

Athleticism, handspeed, footwork, ring savvy, he times his punches well and can make you miss with relative ease. He has all the tools. I'm very impressed. His amateur record is insane and he seems to have great stamina/conditioning... always moving and punching... Great ability to fight going backwards.. he can give anyone trouble in the lower weight classes..

Then again there are some little known fighters who were pretty good amateurs: Muhammad Ali, George Foreman, Evander Holyfield, Wlad Klitschko, Oscar DeLaHoya, Roy Jones, Mayweather, etc. . . . .
I bet if all the Cuban boxers make it to the pro level after Castro is gone every division will be reshaped with new champs and contenders.

Guillermo Rigondeaux is probably the best amateur, pound for pound, in the world today. His turning pro, depending on what weight he's at, is huge. Imagine him against Rafael Marquez in a relatively short amount of time. What it basically means is we have another insanely talented, promising prospect running around in the range of 118-130, which is great. So many super match ups could be made in that area now, it's an exciting time for the lower weights, really.
