Haven't paid much attention to it previously, but I'm watching the Lewis fight on the ESPN Classic marathon and haven't seen much in the uppercut way... maybe a couple "upperhooks" but that's about it. He tended to be an outside fighter or on the ropes, so did he throw them very often over his career?

Figured some of you classic lovers would know this, first time I've ventured in here.

edit... I just saw him throw one anyway.

He hardly ever used it and when he did it didn't have much on it. Not a great punch for him.

Ali is the greatest fighter of all time to not have had much of a body attack, left hook, or maybe a minimum of an uppercut.

He could have had them, but just didn't use them much could be the answer.

He used it a bit v Patterson, Terrell and Chuvalo, also Quarry 2. He got Liston in round 3 with a few uppercuts.

no body attack.
no uppercut...and the one i do remember got him knocked by frazier.
left hook was pretty good
awful defence (guard wise)
sloppy jab at times especailly later inhis career.

but with all that it gelled together to create an incredibly awkward, rule breaking, slick, boxer puncher and regarded as the greatest heavywieght of all time.

The uppercut wasnt Ali`s most used punch but it was defo part of his arsenal.

He hit Frazier a lot with it especially in fights 1 & 3 & hit Quarry with a perfect right uppercut followed by a swift left hook before the ref stepped in & saved Jerry in the 7th rd of their 2nd fight.
Anytime Ive seen Ali use the uppercut, it looks technically perfect & usually carries a decent wallop.

Ali did use the upercut, aspecially his right upercut right after a fast jab. I recall that in the second Frazier fight, dr. Ferdie Pachecko ( Did I get that spelling right? Probably not) who worked in his corner, said that he uses that punch a lot cause it´s a favouritepunch for him.
Since frazier came in low it was an effective punch to use.

Ali liked to use it against shorter guys a lot. Frazier got hit with it a lot in the first and second fights since he was always coming in low. Liston got it a few times when he bent down, and so did some of the other fighters he fought in his early career. (Archie Moore, Cleveland Williams, etc).

At most times though, it was as much a mix of uppercut and hook as anything.

As previously stated the times he used it was most often against shorter, crouching fighters. Against other fighters he didn't have much use for it since he always wanted to stay on the outside.

There is a beautiful example of it against Ellis, though, when Ellis is hurt and tries to close the distance. Ali, while retreating, hits him with an uppercut that makes Ellis look up into the ceiling. The ref stopped it shortly afterwards.

The moment Frazier knocked him down, he was in the process of throwing an uppercut. He didn't use it much however.

I think he threw plenty of uppercuts in his flurries. They were of the arm-punch variety mind you.

Yes. I also think, if i remember it right, that in the second Quarry fight he landed three upercuts. I think the combination was:
jab - right- left upercut X 3. Lethal!
