I am trying to understand the dynamic of this round. LaMotta got Robinson in the corner and landed several, what appear to be, clean shots. Robinson was rolling with them, but his hands were by his side. It almost looks like he wanted LaMotta to unload on him. After that volley, LaMotta was shot. He hardly threw any more punches with significance, and Robinson started teeing off on his head. It's an incredible round of boxing.
Do you think LaMotta actually had Robinson in trouble? Or was Robinson using his extraordinary chin to let a tired LaMotta spend himself? He could have held LaMotta and stopped the action. Did he allow LaMotta to hit him all those times?

Robinson knew what he was doing. Remember they fought five times before, and none on film, so I'm sure he knew Lamotta was going to tee off, then he could get his off. His whole strategy for the fight was to extend Jake into the late rounds and then turn it on.

It wasn't the only time where Robinson showed he was lacking proper skills of fighting off the ropes.
According to Robinson he wanted LaMotta to punch himself out. Can't always believe fighters but Robinson discusses it here on "The Way It Was" at about the 7 minute mark:

That was amazing. Thank you! The film I have, which is the television broadcast, is from the other side of the ring. The film they show here reveals so much because it's at a different angle. The shots from the angle I have make it look like Robinson is getting plastered, but I can see now that he was rolling extremely well. He and Moore were great at that shit. I love listening to Jake and Sugar Ray talking. Very very cool, hdog.

My personal belief is that Lamotta genuinely had the upper hand in this segment of the round. Some of those punches were blocked or slipped sure, but quite a few got in as well. There are few things more debilitating than getting punched, and it still bloody hurts when you get hit, no matter how good your chin is.
I don't know if Robinson was the defensive wizard he's made out to be. This is so open for debate, but my personal feeling is that although it may have been in the back of Ray's mind that Lamotta was winding down, I think it was a legitimate 'last hurrah' from Jake.

Plenty of people are under the impression that Robinson was a defensive genius. I've seen it said quite a few times over the years, mainly in forums.

More astute posters are aware that Robinson fought a bit too aggressively to be an out and out defensive genius, that was the choice he made. I have little doubt that if a situation or opponent forced him to scale back and defend well he could.

Ray was quoted as saying"I could slip more punches but it bores me",he went looking for the stoppage, unlike gifted boxers of the calibre of Jones Jnr ,and Mayweather ,who bores me rigid.

Here's a video (with music unfortunately) of Robinson - Graziano that has a different a different angle of the fight including Robinson's knockout punch.

This is even better, different angle of full fight with Japanese announcers.

I have the fight with Asian announcers. Graziano looks better in that fight than he does against Zale and I don't think Zale was better than Robinson at middleweight. Graziano really seems up for the fight. Against Zale, Graziano misses a lot of shots and is nailed cleanly a lot. Robinson's knockout punch is awesome!
Thanks for the great links.
