View Full Version : is mundine past his peak. is he getting too old

at 33 and no big fights planned in the foreseable future, has mundine already peaked? he wont get any quicker. his cardio wont get any stronger. his lungs wont expand any further.....
one imagines at best, he has 3 competitive years in him. with the best of his youth behind him, and retirement not too far away, has mundine FAILED in his attempt to be as good a boxer as he was capable of, by fighting nobodies and leaving his shot at good fighters too late?
have we already seen the best of mundine?

Yeah I think he has peaked and will not get any better, I disagree with this be as good he was capable, he reach the top level of the 168 divsion and was competive but not dominite, at the highest level like Kessler and calzaghe he was not good enough, the level down he was more than competive he beat most of them. Mundine had a good career and can be proud of what he done and I think he has one or 2 good preformence in him and at 160 I think he could beat everbody except AA and Pavlik in the next 2 years.

Did he ever have a peak?
Probably seen the best of his talent but as for performances that is to determined.
I think the only fighters he struggles against in middleweight is Taylor and Pavlik.
yes. he is past his peak.

Not yet, the next 12-18 months are set to define his career.
he said that after soliman 2. but nothing was defined in 2 years after that.

Yes we have seen his best, very good but a notch or two down from elite.

I hear what you are saying, however he did have his bicep tear and eye injury which had stalled his career 6-12 months.
Therefore, right now is his time to shine. He definitely needs to fight for a world title within his next 2 fights or 6 months, whichever comes quicker.
The good thing is he's very active, has already fought 3 times this year before the end of July, that's pretty good. All he needs now is to step up his opposition and a world title eliminator bout next up would be ideal.

i think he peaked two years ago. or when he beat sam the second time he peaked.
but goin down hill now, i fuckin pray he gets a huge fight to seen what would happen, but it will never happen.
i hope he fights Geale or Sturn next.

The Danny Green fight and second Sam Soliman fights were the best we have seen and probably ever will see from Mundine... After the KO of Sam he should have jumped all over the world scene doing his best to get the best... Unfortunately due to injuries and chocs lack of interest in wanting to fight the best his career has stalled and he got older... At the end of the day he hasnt looked impressive since March 2007... At his age now and the way he has looked in his last 4 to 5 outings i think Choc is pretty much done in terms of fighitng the elite example Pavlik, Abraham, Calzaghe, Kessler e.t.c ... Im not a Mundine hater by any means just calling it how i see it

Nice post.
History has shown reflex fighters have a sharp fall into decline. One day they are seeing punches sail past by a few inches, the next they are landing.

I think Mundine is at his peak now and for the next few years.
He is managed very well and that should see him get another shot at a title against maybe Sturm or Geale.
Mundine at his peak was never going to beat Kess, Joe, Pav and the best 2 or 3 in each division...however very good for a loud mouth NRL player.

Kessler and Pavlik are nowhere near Joes level

Id bet it all on Pavlik to KTFO Joe Slappy.
Id bet it all on Pavlik to KTFO Joe Slappy.i'd give Pav a good chance to beat him aswell but wouldnt put money on him. Pav is effective at what he does but he's a robot, young and hungry but still a robot. Joe could very well make it look simple or Pav could bang him out. Tough fight esp at this stage of Joes career.
In terms of skill and overall achievements in their career. IMO Joes will far outweigh Pavs when all is said and done which is why i dont think Kess or Pav are on Joes level.

An old declining Calzaghe would still be too much for Pavlik.
Calzaghe's angles would confuse the fuck out of Pavlik. Calzaghe's seen Pavlik's best attributes all before and has had little trouble against guys like him.

Yes.
Mundine is on the slide.
2005 - 2006 were his best years

Mundine is most definitely past his best, and as someone else mentioned, his best was never as good as Calzaghe, Kessler, Pavlik, etc...

he never fought Kessler at his peak.
PFFFTTTT!!!!
The Kessler fight was the fight all of Mundine's sack-swingers base their claims of his greatness on!
He apparently peaked in that fight because he didn't get KTFO and managed to land a few pittypats on Kessler as he was running away from him, and survived 12 rounds :yep

Matumla?
Chong Nee?
Green?
Acosta?
Soliman 2 and 3?
Nievas?
Clavero?
Hamdan?
Crazy Kim?

PS - Mundine never beats Kessler, that's why he ran away to MW when Kessler became his mandatory :deal

Mundine's peak was kessler, the domination of green and the only person to beat soliman and not look shit in doing it. he has gone downhill since then. shit opponents and injuries have stopped him reaching his true potential IMO. pretty fuckin' funny, isn't it.
:lol:I miss the long winded conversations i have had with you in the past.
The whole Mundine career from his fans pt of view is getting quite tiresome. One day you never know i might just wish he gets KTFO :yep
You're on. hopkins will beat pavlik. :goodRecent years there have been lots of fights where i cannot tell you the winner and this is another fight.
I have a feeling that Hopkins could pull this one out but i have said this for almost every fight he has had in the past 4 years.
Basically what im trying to get at is fuck Marcus im on Hopkins :fire:deal
I've been fucking deadly serious since the minute the fight ended. I have been disappointed ever since.
What makes you think he can beat him though?
I think it was impressive that he went the distance with Kessler, but geez he got knocked around for his trouble.
Kessler has only improved since then, and Mundine has likely taken a small step backwards.
I'm just trying to work out the logic.

Then the second fight with Soliman wasnt needed aswell as all the fights that came after Soliman 2.
He lost my respect then and will never get it back.

When Mundine left the dragons most people thought his peak would be the aussie title.
I think he has done well to win a few paper world titles and maybe one day he could win a real title and beat a champ like Sturm or Geale.
To be rated top 3 in the would is great for a nrl player.

Now thats a comment that is fair, open minded and 100% correct. If people didnt hate Mundine's personality, they'd adore his achievements for what they are instead of being arrogant, narrow minded pigs.
I'm starting to distance myself as a Mundine fan, i even think i'll go for Green in a rematch. But one thing i'll always do is stick it up those who bag what he's done in boxing.
As a reflex fighter, his fall from grace can happen quickly, and i think its started. I truly believe if he never played League and concentrated on boxing from the age of 16, had 60 or 80 ametuer fights, he would have been one of our all time greats. He's the most "NATURALLY TALENTED" fighter this country has seen in a long long time.
A real shame he'll never fullfill his potential.
Couldnt agree more guys.:deal

I don't think too many would dispute the above, what lets Mundine down is his idiotic mouth.
Whilst his achievements are genuinely good, they ain't even close to what he constantly claims he's going to do.
This is what leaves everyone dissapointed and thinking he's a tosser.

PFFFTTTT!!!!
He came down from a league playing weight of 85kgs to SMW/76kgs by his own choice.
SMW was recognised as one of the weaker divisions at that time, that's why he chose it, rather than MW, where the likes of Hopkins was reigning :hey

Other than Vegas in `92, he was laid out each time... Yet, you still arogantly demean Mundine... I hope the next 3 years provide some insight into his 'true' abilitly... you are, no doubt, one of the ilk who backed green in his match with Mundine.... Danny was a great fighter... but people are totally blind at times.

Tend to agree.
The question started out IS HE GETTING TOO OLD? Thing is too old for what??
For beating retread Aussies who he already knows he can beat. Nah, he could do that for another 10 years!!
