Is it hard sparring? Because Im starting to get nervous about getting brain damage.

Hmmm... Are you getting knocked down in sparring? And do you show signs of minor concussion or anything like that afterwords?

You throw up afterwards, see double for a bit, don't control yourself too well, your speech is a bit all over the place are signs of concussion I remember someone telling me when I first got KD'd in sparring, since I threw up and had a 12 hour headache, but I don't think I was concussed (sucker punch).

I think dilated puplils is also a sign same with extra sensitivity to light.

If you have proper sparring gloves, which are pretty big, headgear and training, you shouldnt have any problems. You should also have it monitered to make sure that when you spar you are trying to score on each other, not hurt each other. If you dont like getting hit, good, emphasize defensive training. If every time you spar, besides the first few times, you are getting hit with alot of flush, painful shots, ease off sparring for a while and work on your defense.
In my opinion, it helps to spar every 1.5 to 2 weeks because it lets what i've learned in the previous session "sink in" and i learn from it in this time period. That's just me though, others might be different.

I use to spar roughly 4 times a week when I was a teenager.

I dont spar anymore - theres no point me get bashed up in a ring - I dont box competitvely so whats the point?

I still train doing various things to keep in shape - running - heavy bag - sprints - press ups - speedball - etc

But I want to keep my brain and my face in one piece these days

If you are worried about getting brain damage from doing too much sparring
try doing some body sparring

no punches above the chest / neck area.

just all body

you still get a through work out and can spar endless rounds without the worry of brain damage or facial disfigurement

in my gym there is no such thing as light sparring, even for the beginners.

HOw does that benefit beginers then? If they getting knocked down in a few punches. I can see that that would be good for experienced people, but I always thought trying to KO your sparring partners everytime you get in there is bad.

i dont make the rules, but we do go somewhat 'easy' against beginners but most people dont think its good/easy enough.

its worked so far so why change it?

i got a terrible concussion snowboarding. the symptoms i had were extreme sensitivity to light for the first 2 days, the worst headache ive ever had, nausea(never did throw up though), my balance was shit, i couldnt string thoughts together. I couldnt type right for a few days, slurred everything, stuttered a little, my ability to think on the fly went down and my grades suffered for a few weeks. the slurred speech and stuttering lasted almost a month, the rest went away after the first week maybe with the headache lasting maybe 2 days. it was hell. the slurred speech though was like i couldnt coordinate my mouth with my brain and the thoughts and speech were just off and it fucked things up.

That was snowboarding though, ive been knocked down and beat around boxing before and never felt any of that other than a headache but i figure thats a given. Knockdowns for me are inspiration to shape up for the rest of the night and i tend to do better after one.
