So give me the low down on the Austrailian boxing team for the Beijing Olympics. Do you have any medal hopefulls or are they all wind and piss like the usual Aussie boxer.

I will be cheering the Austrailian competitors on in every event but I know nothing about the Aussie Olympic boxing team apart from it being of a similar standard to the pro game in Australia which is pretty damm poor.

pretty damm poor.

Though harsh, it is true.

But thats relative, its not as though they are poor boxers but compared to the Eastern Europeans, the Americans and the Cubans we aint got nothing.
Though seeing we bagged one more gold medal than the English at Manchester CG and had only 2 less total medals at Melbourne CG, we must not be to far off them. :D

We have had several world champs in the last decade, many title contenders and countless ranked fighters (not that counts for much) in the pro arena.
We havent had near that success in the am's, partly to with the culture of boxing down here, partly to do with boxing's low standing and participant rate compared to other sports down here but mostly because we just didnt produce anyone good enough.

The interest levels of boxing in Australia aint that high, plus our population isnt huge too.
I think we do quite decent compared to many other countries with larger populations.
We barely have 100 registered pro boxers.

A helmet which does not absorb any percussion of impact.. 10 ounce gloves which are used extremely frequently in professional world title fights. Until youve been there, having a little respect for the people that have wouldnt be a stretch.

And yes, we have several genuine medal chances. Brad Pitt is probably our best.. Jarrod Fletcher also a huge chance. Expect either to medal. Daniel Beahan isnt without a chance if he gets a good draw.

They aren't close to being genuine medal contenders. Outsiders at best. All your fighters qualified through the Oceania qualifiers (piss weak). They all seem to have been beaten in the first couple of rounds at the worlds.

I'm not saying Australia won't get a boxing medal just that it's a massive long shot.

Brad Pitt, Jarrod Fletcher, Todd Kidd (till he meets Frankie Gavin again ;) ) are all solid boxers.

As for the piss and wind comment.. when was the last time any of the Aussies talked up their chances- or spoke out of turn?? Give then some credit FFS...

I heard that Chowdrey or what ever his name was - i.e. the most corrupt official in WORLD sport has been dumped as the IABA head. Hopefully we only see every other fight being judged with a bias and not them all....

We have some decent boxers in the Olympics, but i doubt any will get close to a medal sadly.

I didn't know Todd Kidd fought Frankie Gavin, how'd the fight go? I think Gavin might dissappoint at the games, i think he might get too wild and sloppy as he sometimes tends to do, plus i hear he's really struggling to make the weight. Plus Tishenko is out for blood :yep

Chill out, I was taking the piss because of the title of the thread.

I have been in am fights and been stopped, so I know how much damage can still be done.

None of those guys will medal unless they get a lucky draw and a couple of WO's.

Kidd got mauled unfortunately. It was the Comm games and as Kidd was running out of gas Gavin was winding up. If Tischenko doesn't win, I think Gavin's got it. But the beauty of boxing is any man can take it most times if they're evenly matched- it's just who wants it more:good

are u a amature boxer.. or just a supporter of it

A had an am fight about 2 years back- trained for around 2 years or so. I'm a big fan of it in general. I'm doing exercise physiology an University and work the rest of the time so I don't have time to train anymore unfortunately.

I do a lot of running (mostly 10km's) and did a marathon earlier in the year. Overall i'm a huge fan of endurance sports and fitness in general- I think amateur boxing is one of the greatest workouts you can get :good

I'll be cheering the aussie boys 100% of the way but unfortunately i dont like our medal chances either...

theres some great talent amongst the team and i'd say our best chances are with Jarrod Fletcher and based on his showings at the worlds Daniel Beahan

Australia has alot of things against it for amatuer boxing... there's a massive shortage in interest the fueds between the Australian Boxing League and the ABA lower our chances as well with the ABA's rules bannin people from fighting in the league... theres some good talent in the league i've seen it...

plus internationally Australia in't in a good region our only real competion i ourselves.

but none the less im backin the boys 100% of the way and really hope each of them brings home a gold!!!!

A little bird told me last night that Gavin may not take part and could be on his way home within the next day or two , apparently he cant make weight and is 4lbs over and cant shift it , fucking incredible , Apparently he gets a lotto grant of £75,000 a year for boxing as an amature and he cant make weight . this will be more embarrassing than anything in the history of World am boxing if confirmed .

BOXING DRAMA

World lightweight champion boxer Frankie Gavin of Britain, a hot favourite for the 60kg gold medal at the Beijing Olympics, will miss the Games after failing to make the weight.

Terry Edwards, head coach of the British boxing team, says they've done everything they can, but it's not enough for tomorrow morning's weigh-in.

"Frankie has been working his whole boxing career towards the Olympic Games and he is obviously completely devastated," Edwards says.

One of the Yanks has failed to make the weight as well. It'll happen quite a lot over these games.

Let's hope someone like aboriginal lightweight ANTHONY LITTLE can bob up and surprise us all!

Unfortunately our first 4 competitors were eliminated in their first bouts.

Paul Fleming had a red-hot go against the Frenchman though. Went at him from the first bell!

Anthony Little (LW) got through very well 14 points to 2, and now faces the Russian competitor, and we've still got Brad Pitt (HW) to come.

Ok its official.... outta 9 boys, 1 got through...

Brad Pitt got out pointed last night and Daniel Beahan got stopped in the 1st round....

Anthony Little faces athens gold medalist Alexey Tishchenko in his next bout... It's a tough fight for him but i believe Anthony can produce the goods required to beat the Russian!!

Hmmm

Im confidant Anthony can do it.

Brit David Price just knocked out the gold medal favourite in the super heavy division, which is a pretty big upset.

whatarock, who was the super hvy favourite? and is price that big gangly white kid?

WhataRock
08-14-2008, 04:30 AM
Price is a whitey, he is British and won commonwealth gold in melbourne. He did alright in the worlds but I think he pulled out of his fight with the enventual gold medalist from Italy injured.

He was an outside chance at a medal because he had shown pretty good form against world class opponants but no one would have bet on him beating Islam Timurziev the Russian and betting favourite. Few were sold on price before these games.

Islam was the favourite
Followed closely by the Italian world champ.

Islam was the euro champ, who had wins over the awesome Cuban Solis and only was relegated to bronze at the worlds because he pulled out of his match with the Italian with illness, he had already beaten the Italian.

I put a lobster on the Chinaman about a week ago. I think he was paying $17 I just thought cause he is the hometown bloke and actually not a bad fighter, (he bronzed at the worlds) that he would be in with a chance at the gold. My bet is looking possible now..

More than likely Cammerelle or the Ukranian (his name escapes me, starts with "G" ends with "ov") will bag it now however.

But what do I know, I always get shit like this wrong and I would have been 100% sure Islam was finishing the games with the gold a few days ago.
