Robinson was noticably slower at MW than he had been at WW, he'd maintained some decent power, but it was nothing that would KO someone like Calzaghe -fullstop- SRR was the greatest ever, but he isn't going up to SMW to beat Calzaghe or Roy Jones Jr, size does matter -fullstop- We are talking about someone who was a featherweight amature, WW pro here, they just don't beat a very large and skilled SMW -fullstop- Someone has already suggested workrate is the way to beat Robinson -fullstop- There is so much against Robinson in this matchup I can't see him winning barring hand injuries to Calzaghe -fullstop-

Hard to say. He's never fought a powerful puncher who was also quick and accurate...Calzaghe's durability is completley unkknown due to his reluctance to tussle at the highest level.
We are talking about someone who was a featherweight amature, WW pro here, they just don't beat a very large and skilled SMW -fullstop- Someone has already suggested workrate is the way to beat Robinson -fullstop- There is so much against Robinson in this matchup I can't see him winning barring hand injuries to Calzaghe -fullstop-
I don't mean to be rude but history is full of examples of great fighters stepping up and beating good fighters - all Calzaghe has proven himself, though he may actually be better.
Making a pick of Calzaghe over Robinson is not unreasonable if you do it upon the basis of size.
But you seem to see Calzaghe as clearly superior.
That is so far from the truth as to be stupidity.

Calzaghe...
The style, unorthodoxy, speed,Southpaw stance, pressure, stamina and durability of joe is too much for robinson at 168....Maybe a stoppage even....If robbie was that good at even 168 (and remember todays 168 is like 175 yesteryear with the day before weigh ins.) how come he never rematched maxim or fought for another lt heavy strap? Calzaghe is a very big 168,should be a 175er...

It works like this.
I do not hand out fantasy wins over Sugar Ray Robinson like sweeties. For an active fighter to get picked over him he is going to have to prove a hell of a lot in the ring.
As things stand Calzaghe is going into the bigest fight of his career which will have a major impact in terms of deciding where he ultimately ranks in the pantheon of historic fighters.
How he fares in that fight will do a lot to decide where he stands relative to Robinson or even La Motta.

maxim was a great fighter he had the jab the abilty to take a punch but...he was way to sluggish.
calzaghe is a athlete his stamina is amazingf i have seen him throw almost a 100 punches againt mark delaney and then come the 2nd round to fire off 70 punches throughout the fight.
maxim through alot of punches but didnt bounce didnt flow he just seemed to move to him jab and hope he hit.
calzaghe even though he accomplished less than robinson (by a very long margine) hasa style i feel he can beat robinson

Calzaghe easily defeats Robinson at 168. Robinson's not even at his best or at his optimum weight here.
Amsterdam
07-29-2007, 05:48 PM
Robinson was a top 5 MW of all time( a MUCH MUCH MUCH more stacked weight class than SMW, where Calzaghe ranks second) and would've been a LHW champ if not for the heat against a HOF'er. It's pretty obvious with his success at MW he would've been a good SMW as well. Great fight, but the experience tips it in SRR's favor.
Calzaghe would have equally easily won every single round against a guy like Maxim, a peak Calzaghe also had no hand problems.
Think on this one, everyone underrates Calzaghe on here.
SRR presents nothing needed to beat Calzaghe in terms of signature weapons either and don't act like I know nothing about SRR.
Amsterdam
07-29-2007, 06:30 PM
Why would Calzaghe have won every round against Maxim? Explain. I'm not even sure he wins.
Based on size and being more naturally fit for the weight, Calzaghe is the choice, but based on ability and the fact that he had success at those weights and proved he was still among the best, Robinson is easily in the fight, and his experience against top notch comp gives him the edge for sure.
But he'd have fought no fighter who even remotely resembles Calzaghe's style.

Calzaghe easily defeats Robinson at 168.
Whe you put a word like "easily" into that sentance and absolutley fail to provide any reasoning, it's pretty easy to dismiss the pick.

He has faster hands. Calzaghe also has very fast hands. He is normally faster of hands than his opponent. If he is fighting a guy who out does him in an area where he outdoes his opponent, there is something very interesting right there. I'd hesitate to pick a guy EVER who has a deficency in an area where he normally has an advantage...not that Cal doesn't have many other weapons, but here is a signature weapon worth thinking about.

I'm not convinced SRR (at 168 or whatever weight he comes in at) is actually any faster than Joe Calzaghe -fullstop- Calzaghe would just flick his jab out, neither fighter getting the better - until Calzaghe used his size to get close and basically slap the hell out of Robinson -fullstop- Imagine if LaMotta had been taller and faster, with more skill, variety and accurate slaps - 168 (one day weigh-in) Calzaghe has that strength and it better at practically everything else -fullstop-

And finally, how come after that one failed attempt ray NEVER again tried to fight for another lt heavy strap or rematch maxim?????? That along with him ducking burley shows another side to robbies character....Robbie was no lt heavy, and calzaghe is a big super middle who is a lt heavy or more come fight time...
All the great lt heavies would have smashed robbie, and a few super midddles would have beat him as well....Remember robbies best weight was welter.( or lt middle if it had existed back then.)
