Anything with a swiss ball is tops, most exercises work 4 or 5 muscle groups at the same time.

L-sits, L-pullups, deadlifts, squats.
Boxing, jumping, climbing, swimming, etc. The focus on weights on this site is astounding. Even the crossfit guys talk about weights 90% of the time.

Moving around 100+kg puts more stress on your core than rolling around on a ball. Also, isometric holds like L-sits work very well too as well as the ones you suggested.

Squats are pretty effective. You can feel it working on your abs after a while.

It's called crossfit not crossstrong, isn't it? There's more to being fit than moving weights around.

Where did I say being fit is 100% moving weights around? I said -
Moving around 100+kg puts more stress on your core than rolling around on a ball.
Which it does...
Yes, it does. But whether that will make your core better overall is a different issue. I'm not attacking you, and my post is more general than in response to this particular thread. I just think the focus on strength and weights is absolutely ridiculous.

well that is what we're trying to achieve aren't we?
a stronger core?

Not me. I'm after way more than strength. My core needs to be flexible, muscular endurance needs to be good, I want good speed for upper body movement, etc.

Ab curls, if do this exercise right it works the abs to shit, most sit ups involve using the hip flexors aswel so your not isolationg you abs. But the ab curljust focus's on your abdominal and oblique muscles...

They were replying to the original poster though, and he wanted to know how to strengthen his core. Virus' reply was spot on.

That's what I was getting at as well, the original poster (tightening up the abs, wtf). The focus on strength is ridiculous. Virus' reply was on weights, as always. As 90% of the replies on this board is. Weights weights weights. Sparring not going well? I need more strength! A punch in the liver hurt? I need more strength!
There's more to being fit than strength, and for the core this is true as well. The type of training some advocate around here produces stiffs. Strong? Sure. But lacking in every other department of physical fitness.

The question wasn't about physical fitness, it was exercises to strengthen the core. Deadlift and squats are by far the most effective for strength.
If somebody asks a question about weight training or strengthening whatever and I can help I'll give whatever info I can, whether it relates to boxing or not.

I agree with you, but on this occasion the question was about strength and it was answered accordingly.
I wonder whether they should make up a sub-forum within the 'Training' bit, dedicated to lifting. That'd leave this free to focus on boxing.

I know and like I said I wasn't attacking you. It wasn't the wrong answer, it was the question that bothered me. It's always strength, sometimes this looks like a weight lifting board. What the hell is "tightening up the abs" anyway.

No I'm not. Just offering a different perspective. I did answer his question first. There are more ways to strengthen the core, and some have an added bonus that they do more than just adding strength.

Well, I am a fan of stone lifting...
Surely it depends on what you want from the exercise.
If it is ,say,to better withstand a shot to the liver or solar plexus a good barbell exercise would be good mornings.
If you want to your lower back muscles-the spinal erectors- to contract powerfully ,in a standing erect position ,you can try back extensions, with a barbell on your shoulders.Zercher back squats are also quite good for this purpose.

Why?

Deadlift is a lot better.

zercher good mornings.Sorry...:patsch
Why?
Why do good mornings?
Well ,wouldn't enormous stress be placed on the internal abdominals, when stabilising the wieght at the bottom part of the movement? They would act as a sort of corset to protect from a punch.

I meant zercher good mornings.Sorry typo.I should read through my posts before submitting...:patsch

how long do you usually do plank holds for?

I do hanging straight leg raises, plank switching to side planks on both sides and then repeat, Ab crunches on a swiss ball, and bird dogs. I also do squats and deadlifts but i do those more for leg strength rather core.
