View Full Version : Who else is glad it looks like that farce has fallen through?

I am, of course, talking about the bonfire of vanities that was the proposed match up between Oscar De La Hoya & Manny Pacquiao. Apparently the main reason was money but one of the side issues was gloves. It would appear Oscar wanted everything in his favour despite already having a lot of advantages.
I've never been one of these De La Hoya haters (and there are many) but this whole charade has really made me lose respect for him. A former 154 champ fighting a former flyweight wanted the heavier gloves & heavier split. De La Hoya has often talked about legacy & how he will be remembered but I really don't see how this fight would have added to anything besides his bank balance.
No doubt he'll now turn his attention to Ricky Hatton, another fighter he'd have a lot of advantages over. Oscar's plan for the now defunct Mayweather rematch was to makes 147 again, hence why he came in at 150 for the Forbes bout. Why does he not continue with this plan & fight some of the other guys in the deep welterweight division if he's that concerned about legacy? I'd argue that he's not, his primary concern is money.
I think boxing is better off without Oscar now, I'll be interested to hear what you other guys think.

It's good for boxing, and it's good for Hatton. I just hope he gets past Malignaggi now...

You hope?
You mean you are comprehending the possibility he could lose? :think

It is not good for Hatton he would have no chance aginst DLH, then all the tirades against him would come up again. There would be no mention that both his losses were against 5 weight champs, just that he was rubbish.

I don't mind any boxer losing, Mayweather-Hatton was probably the biggest fight I've ever seen a British fighter involved in, it was awesome.
Hatton-Pacquaio will be amazing too, no doubt.

I was referring more to Hatton-Pac, than Hatton-De La Hoya.

Okay I appreciate all your views on Hatton but this isn't the only thing to consider here. What are peoples thoughts on Oscar's legacy? Should he continue fighting? If so should he be challenging some of the welters? How about the kings ransom he commands from every fight still?

It's the Brit forum, I was trying to pull it back.

Yes but we also discuss other boxing topics within the confines of our British contingent. It's been done several times in the past. So how do you feel about the other issues raised Sleaze?

I was dissappionted in De La Hoya for trying to get a fight with Pac, like most people were. If I had the choice I'd like to see him fight Margarito now.
Although it doesn't bother me too much what he does, I'll let Americans worry about Oscar.

As a BOXING fan are you not interested in what Oscar does?
I think Oscar was being a prick by demanding 70% of the purse. Pac is the p4p no.1, started out a flyweight and was willing to move up two weight classes to make the fight. Plus Pac is quite a big draw himself so h should have got at least 40% of the cut.
IMO, Margarito is now the only logical match up for Oscar. He should fight a genuine Welter and not some blown up smaller guys.

For some reason I honestly didn't think this fight was ever going to happen from the beginning. I admit it was starting to look very likely through the press though. I'm glad it has fallen through!
Hatton V PAC (if they both get by their next opponents), and Margo V Oscar will do me just fine. :good

"Not interested" is bit too far. But I'm British, why would I want to plan Oscar's last few fights? There's enough people doing that already.
Whoever he fights I'll watch it - at 3am, I watched him and Steve Frobes after all.

Steve Forbes after all.
I stopped up, and watched that as well. What a boring fight.
Oscar is clearly done as a relevant fighter. He is not relevant to any division, or in a p4p sense. He's just looking for a money spinning fight against any comer that is either not a threat, or really small and thus giving him a chance whilst making loads of money.
It doesn't really affect his legacy though, being a greedy twat. It's not a morality contest, and at the end of the day he's sort of earnt the right after fighting virtually everybody.

I used to love Oscar as a boxer but his reputation is declining rapidly since he went into promoting.
It's easy to forget how great a fighter he is now with these farcical potential match ups which is a shame.

There is only one reason De La Hoya continues to be a once a year professional fighter.
Extra cash to fund Golden Boy Promotions.
He is not a boxer anymore he is a boxing promoter.
Golden Boy Promotions has become very successful and that is his day job.
He only whips himself into shape once a year for a "event" rather than a fight.
His legacy is secured - he is not fighting for that now.
He is a guy who fought the best and held his own - but did not dominate -
Felix Trinidad
Shane Mosley
Bernard Hopkins
Felix Strum (unofficially)
Floyd Mayweather
all beat
Mayweather was a money bonaza thats why he took the fight
but from here on in its about the money and funding Golden Boy to continue to build to become the biggest promotions in World boxing
Oscar might go on for a few more years yet - he was supposed to have reitred years ago - never happens -
as a fighter he is mediorce now but would still have enough natural advantages to see off midgets Hatton and maybe Pac
however this is not ambtious or legacy defining
you dont exactly see Oscar planning to go back up to Middleweight to challenge Kelly Pavlik now like he did when he jumped in with Hopkins
Oscar is now nothing more than a novelty act - but he still generates money so the show goes on

I didn't want to see Oscar-Pac, not because of Oscars legacy but just because I think the weight difference would be too much and the fight would be a mis-match. If Oscar doesn't want to fight, or think he can beat, 147 lb+ fighters then he should retire.

I don't think Oscar has slipped that much, his stamina has always been an issue for him - not just recently.
Though I do agree with Freddie Roach that he finds pulling the trigger troublesome.
I'm also glad this fight has fallen through.
As it's already been said, he's had a great career but it's time to hang em up now, he is just a novelty.
I dont want to see him vs Marg either though, i want Marg to rematch Williams, so i'd be happy with say Trinidad for his last fight be cause all it is, is a novelty fight, a farewell fight so i'd rather it be against someone else where as, it would have no affect on any division.
Very glad. I am just looking forward to the continued squirming by Oscar to get away from a fight with the Tornado.
Tony deserves this big payday, but I think the chance is thinner than anorexic.
Fuck Oscar.

Yeah glad its not happening for many reasons.
If DLH really wants to add to his legacy he should fight Margo, but deep down he knows he lacks the stamina to get the job done.
