Yes that american was shit but then most the USA squad is pretty shit apart from Demetrius Andrade who has superb speed. Wilder Deontay also looks totally shit.

DeGale likes to slap.

DamonD

He's still a bit too loosey-goosey for me, likes to swing those arms around his waist and try to psych opponents into swinging at him without always having the reflexes to avoid taking a whack in return.

But still, even without being top notch he had another clear points win and did get a nice flow going over the last round. So all to the good :)

Wonder what the Americans think of this. I thought I saw a couple with high hopes of this kid. I missed the fight but hope to see it later. Well done DeGale.

No, Estrada is pretty well known for getting himself DQ'd in half the major tournaments he used to be in. He just somehow put it together at the Olympic Trials. Danny Jacobs was probably better than him; but somehow lost to him at the Trials.

Thats my point. He was a dead cert gold before the competition and so was Frankie Gavin but things do not always go to plan. Jacobs has talent but not enough to get him where he wanted.

degale seems to rely on his opponent making mistakes -
i think the kazak will be too technically good and composed for him.

hope i'm wrong though

I don't know, Danny got annihilated by Matvei Korobov a few years back but it's possible with more experience and international training and competition he could have done really well. He was a lot less wild than Shawn can be.

That Kazakh was a tough opponent coming into this fight.

Christ, he's awkward and slippery.

trotter
08-20-2008, 09:44 AM
He boxed really well there.

The Kazakh was a bit ragged as the fight wore on but Degale looked GOOD to me. Nice footwork, good countering, he worked out where he could get success and used it.

He caught everything the other lad threw for the first round or two.

DamonD
08-20-2008, 09:44 AM
Exactly, that's what he does best and what he did here - counter-punching, spoiling and evading. The Kazakh was in trouble once he had to start pushing the fight.

Looked sharper than the first two rounds as well. Good stuff!

3 bronzes minimum for the boxing.

rooq
08-20-2008, 05:16 PM
wow. suprised but very happy. degale and jeffries are two of the fighters i didn't expect to get this far especially with degales tough draw.

again he'll start as underdog against an opponent who's beaten him a few times before but this might suit degale.

sutherland has beaten de gale four times now, with de gale winning one

but all that means nothing now, cant wait for it.. Cmon the dazzler :happy

Congratilation DeGale, good match up from him. With Sautherland will nice fight, and chances are 50:50. The Uzbek who was beaten by Sautherland its very hard opponent. The Uzbek beats Arteyev last month in the Turkey according to the ESB memeber NBT. Great semifinal ?

The guy is very cocky. If you think Khan comes across as a nob in his interviews then this chap will go one better when he turns pro.

The Cuban he will probably face in the final does not look too exciting, gold is there for the taking for degale. Just got bored with the cubans semi final against kumar of india.

08-22-2008, 04:50 AM
I dont like him:(

Sound like a nob!

Artani
08-22-2008, 04:59 AM
DeGale wins clearly Sautherland. The bout results 10:3 for DeGale. He will face in the final the Cuban Correa who wins Indian, Kumhar.

DamonD
08-22-2008, 04:59 AM
He can be King Nob of Nobtown for all I care, he's in the final.

Don't think Egan came off all that better, despite the chummy tone. Gary was mentioning his sportsmanship but he didn't give Degale a single bit of credit.

"He's a runner"...he was running, but he was also hitting you in the face with counterpunches throughout.

I'm tired of boxers that think you're not a real fighter unless you're planting your feet and throwing hooks from the hip.

Let's be clear about this - he's a runner, and Egan was not skillful or fast enough to catch him. Good going Degale, exceeded my expectations and good luck in the final.

Kolya
08-22-2008, 05:26 AM
I don't know if Degale will beat Correa. Correa can be slap happy, but he is quite good.

Beeston Brawler
08-22-2008, 05:29 AM
He reminds me of Junior Witter - both in fighting style and persona.

Putting personal issues aside, I am glad he is in the final and hope he wins - then gets KTFO when he turns pro

TFFP
08-22-2008, 05:35 AM
I'm not sure he'll be a good pro. There are many things you have to ask. Can he actually take a shot? The Irish guy looked like he rocked him a bit. There are questions there.

Does he actually have any power, there is a lot of slapping going on. If he does fight with a similar style, it will be very difficult to fight 12 rounds with so much legwork.

Indeed... he boxed superbly and he's sussed out a great style for the ams. Make them lead, slip and counter. Repeat.

But he arm punches a hell of a lot.

I guess we just can't judge until we see him give and take punches in the pro's. He'd need a decent spell to make the transition, he'd need some major work.

Very well done today though.

fantastic performance by degale yet again.

hope he wins gold but i'm not convinced about his punch resistance either. i've seen him hurt in earlier pre-olympics competitions as well.

i haven't heard much of him in interviews so can't comment on if he's more arrogant than khan.

DeGale is a serious talent. hes got a good style for the pros aswell. Just hoping he doesnt sign with Frank ******.

he took that punch from sutherland in the 4th that was huge really well. his chin is certainly better than amirs.

Hes got the "selling tickets factor" slick southpaw very good, more suitable for the pro's IMO but does seem to lack major power. but very good fighter, like trotter who cares? they act like that to get people to recognise them, more attention = more money. IE Haye and Named.

I mean i watched an interview with hamed and he said he felt stupid at times with the things he used to say. all about selling yourself.

Not such a bad idea if he takes the Eubank-style "bad guy" approach...I've alwayd felt that Carl Froch is doing something very similar at the moment.
