Ronald "Winky" Wright for more recent times, and before anyone else mentions him.

I've heard some say Johnson and Gans were both great at this.

..this will come as a surprise to many here, but if you can find some film of the young joe louis he was very adept at picking off punches.

harold johnson was brilliant, plus he could then , when he blocked with his right hand, continue its motion to land a punch with it.

back to joe louis....chappie blackburn taught him this, and blackburn himself picked it up from jack johnson.

Pernell Whitaker. Brilliant while pulling out of range with his left glove up next to his chin to block right hand's down the pipe from his opponent.

He also went into a defensive shell with both hands protecting his head while on the ropes which blocked many punches.

Whitaker could be unorthodox and fancy defensively, but he used his gloves to block on a regular basis.

I agree with you on this robbi, i was checking the jose luis ramirez fight and when he was in the corners he was using this a lot to avoid hooks....masterful class by sweetpea

Wow, not a mention of the best parry'er of all-time......

Nobody did it better than Julio Cesar Chavez!

Honestly, I've never seen anybody come close to doing it as easy and effortlessly as JC Chavez. It was the basis for his defense, and it set up alot of left hooks to the body off that parry!
