Few years ago we had very boring heavyweights as world champions. John Ruiz and and Chris Byrd. But think about todays heavyweight champs. Wlad and Chagaev are the most boring heavyweight champions ever.
Wlad - His 4 last fights have been boring as hell. (It is not really Wlad´s fault, his opponents just have not been competitive).
Chagaev - He has VERY safe style and he has NEVER been involved in a action packed fight! All of his fights have been boring.
Ibragimov - His only titlefight was the most boring fight of the millenium. (not really Sultans fault, he just did enogh to win the title).
Maskaev - The most exchiting heavyweight today, mostly becouse he has bad chin and power. I liked the Rahman fights, but othewise his fights are usually boring.
These guys have Eastern European stand up style... It might be right now the most effective style in the world... but... most of the fights suck!

The only ones I agree with you are Ibragimov's title fight and Maskaev's fights. That being said, I think most of the fault lays on Briggs for making that fight a snoozer.
Which fights of Chagaev have you watched? Even his fight with Ruiz was quite entertaining.
I also enjoyed quite a bit when Klitshko decapitated Byrd and Brock. The Austin fight was so short that there was not enough time to bore me. The Brewster fight definetly did not leave to its expectation. That being said, watching a HW throwing almost 500 punches over 6 rounds is still very impresive.

I thought Wlad's last couple of fights were pretty entertaining. One-sided, but enough action to stop them from being boring.

Only Wlad truly employs this style. Chagaev and Ibragimov are both smaller, mobile fighters that are entertaining to watch. I think the division is actually fairly interesting at the moment.

i cannot really agree with you there. i felt the period straight after lewis vacated was the most boring. tho vitali gave us a few beat downs which were fun if you like seeing fighters get owned, the others were snoozers. remember byrd-williams? or ruiz fights?
wladimir is a little safety first but no more than floyd or roy jones was. and if you think they were boring because they were careful not to get hit then you simply dont like the sweet science and only prefer brawls with lots of haymakers. i love castillo-corrales and gatti-ward type fights but i still consider seeing someone like wladimir in action exciting in it's own way too.
and have you forgotten recent fights like brewster-lychkovich? or blast outs like wlad-austin? tyson used to blast out tomato cans too but that was more exciting than a guy who used one hand in the fight and finished it off with a quadruple left hook?
maybe it's just bias towards foreign fighters that make you think they are LESS exciting than byrd-williams or ruiz fights.

Toney, obvioulsy you havent seen a lot of Chagaev's fights, have you!
Chagaev vs Ruiz was a fairly entertaining fight.By the way Ruiz is American, and that fight was the first one with Ruiz which can be called fun to watch.
As for your laughable statement that most of the fights of the fighters of the former soviet union suck I strongly recommend you to go and buy a tape Vladimir Virchis vs Taras Bidenko.'Bidenko vs Virchis was the most exciting and dramatic heavy weight fight I have seen within the last couple of years.
Lyakhovich vs Brewster was a fun to watch ,too.
The second part of your last statement was quite funny, too.
"The Eastern European standup style might be right now the most effective style out there"
Righ now,eh! Russia, and the countries of the former soviet union together with Cuba have been dominating amateur boxing for ages. The American fighters are dwarfs compared with their Russian counterparts.
As for the paid ranks Russian and Cuban fighters havent been able to dominate the pro business for various reasons.
1.during comunism no soviet or cuban fighter was allowed to fight as a pro
2.at present the horrible lack of capital and the lack of tv money doesnt provide the opportunity for legions of talented fighters from the countries of the former soviet union to turn pro
3.Cuba is still a huge prison for its countless talented fighters
And by the way eastern european fighters and fighters from the soviet union are two different cup of teas.
I know that a lot of posters from europe call fighters like Chagaev or the Klitschko brothers eastern european.
However,as we all know this is just ridiculous.
Poles,Czechs,Bulgarians,or Hungarians may be eastern europeans. This is certainly not true for Russian fighters,or fighters from other regions of the former soviet union.
In the russian language we even use the phrase "I travel to europe" to describe that we are going to travel to country like Germany,Poland,or England.
Sounds really alien to russian ears to call him an eastern european, mate!
Totally not interested in the division now, will only watch when Wladimir or Peter fight, the rest are all boring to me.

So, in light of the other thread on here about anti-American sentiment..
What does this thread tell us?
HW is boring. Says who? The American?
Funny how that coincides with the fact that all American Heavies are being thrashed in the ring of late, isn't it?
Same goes for 168. A great division to follow - if you're not American - because then it's lacking in talent and a boring division. Again, no Americans are at the top and the ones that have been near it have been taken out like club fighters.
This is exactly why anti American sentiment is prevailing on this board.

The heavey wight scene is pretty good with highly talented fighters.
Vlad has just been too dominant.
Chageav and Sultan are very capable and have been in decent fights.
Makeav is cool and should offer an entertaining fight next.
The problem is that the poor state of American heavies means that European fighters keep having to fight joke opposition.

I donīt think that todays GUYS suck. I just think that they have very safe, boring styles. Effective yes, exchiting no. They make boring fights. They do just enough to win fights. They take no risks.
And yes, I have seen something like 6-7 Chagaevs fights. All of them have been really boring. I kind of like the kid and I think that basickly he could be in a interesting bout, but he just takes no risk. All of his fights have been boring.
Hi guys... Just think about it... You guys think that Chagaev vs. Ruiz was a good fight. That just tells all about how boring todays heavyweight bouts are! That just tells it all! In the 1990īs Chagaev vs. Ruiz would had been considired as the most boring fight of the year. But now, becouse just about all of the heavyweight titlebouts are SO DUCKING BORING, becouse of it some people actually think that Chagaev vs. Ruiz was an enterteining fight... :yikes Oh, please. Boxing has went real low if this was a good fight.

Heavyweights are boring. that is not american it is the truth. They all dont suck, but they are not entertaining and bring 0 excitement in the ring. Dry dull fighters. You can be a good fighter and be dry and dull. No shame in that.
he has been guaranteed a title shot at the winner of Peter- Oleg, if that does not happen it will be King and Peter's handlers that stop it ...not Vitaly

Didnt Peter knock Wlad down like 3 or 4 times..now that was exciting.
and he still lost the fight easily, besides the knock downs.. which were not very good anyhow, he lost every round of that fight, he will not be able to knock Vitaly around like that.

They're boring because they're slow and they cling to their opponents. No excitement in these fights unlike in the lighter divisions.
I wouldn't call it boring, because i won't miss any of the fights i can catch. Wlad is almost too damn good for his own good (it's almost like from a business perspective he should let the other guy do a little something). But aside from the belt holders currently we do have a bunch of guys that don't seem to care to stay in top shape anymore (too many to name) and some others are just trying to be too damn big to even move (Briggs). The cruisers are looking like what the "exciting" heavies I imagine we like to remember as exciting (Haye, Ding, etc.. guys coming in without fat hanging off and ready to give plenty of action). It seems IMO that most of the Heavies we think of as exciting never weighed more than 220- 240.
I do find it amazing when guys come to big fights and show up out of shape.Briggs is a different storey, he's in the wrong kind of shape, but James Toney, Kirk Johnson, Danny Williams...to name a few
paulfv
08-19-2007, 12:00 AM
This is the best the division has been in years.
Both Klitschko brothers, a still-hanging-in Maskaev, the guy who finally rid the boxing world of Shannon Briggs (S. Ibragimov), Lyakhovich, Valuev, Chagaev (depending on how he can treat his illness), Potvenkin, an over-rated-but-still-entertaining Sam Peter. And that doesn't even take into account the old timers: Tuaman; Oliver McCall - the guy who first, 'officially,' busted Lennox's chin; and, of course, the 44-year-old who will be trying to win his 5th HW title.
I'm pumped. There is a ton of talent in the division today, and I barely even touched on any American prospects. Finally we may be able to return to some of the glory of the early 1990's which has been missing ever since Sir "Jab-and-Grab" was ducking fighters like Sanders and Byrd and waltzing with guys who had 15-inch reach disadvantages, as did David Tua.
Happy days are almost here again. Woo-hoo!!

08-19-2007, 12:07 AM
Seconded. The only thing that is lacking right now is a Unified Champion. But the talent right now is great. Lots of solid fighters. The thing that is wrecking is all the fucking belts. The top guys only fight for one organization and avoid facing fighters from others. If Wlad can win another belt, it will be a huge improvement.
I agree, but as long as the Don King's of the world and the heads of the governing bodies are the way they are, having a unified champ is going to be very, very difficult. It's just not worth fighting a guy for a belt sometimes when you have to give Electric Hair options on 2 of your next fights.
I wish McCain or someone could get some national legislation passed on boxing. Oh, well. At least the HW division is big-time on the rise right now. I'm actually very excited for both Peter-Maskaev and Holyfiel-Ibragimov

People who think Briggs vs Ibragimov was bad should watch Spinks-Holmes.
Then there was Spinks fighting the legendary Steffen Tengstadt and Anders Eklund, guys more fit for Olympus than Canastota.:bart
The heavys around today IMO are better than many other eras. The only epoch of big men that was definitely better was the late 60s and early 70s.

Posters such as MexicanJew, Odo, Zuras, & others have pretty much covered this topic. It seems the person that started this thread has not seen many of the borefest HWT fights from the 80s, and indeed other eras including the overrated 70s. You can always find boring fights in any era and division. I think the current HWT era is one of the best. The boxing business & politics is even more complex now than it was in days gone by - which is a problem. But that's no reason to take it out on the current HWTs unless you have certain issues that more than few ESB posters have. To answer this thread -
NO, it's just as exiting as ever - no more or less !
Most of the top 90s to date HWTs would demolish most of the top small HWT to even CWT sized "heavies" of the 70s, 60s & earlier. I'll use 2 fighters as examples -Floyd Patterson & Jerry Quarry.
Both of these guys were about the same size, and were very good fighters. In their primes they were at or below 200#. Either man would have a good chance to be CWT champ today or at least have one of the belts. But at HWT  they could beat the C guys and maybe on a good nite the B fighters. Most top HWTs today would almost bounce Floyd or Jerry out of the ring or bust them up for a TKO. And you can talk about stamina all you want, it wouldn't even be an issue because Floyd or Jerry would not make it to the later rounds vs a Lewis, K bros, and others too. I would favor Valuev, Sultan, Chagaev, Peter & Maskaev over either of these top late 50s to mid 70s 195-200# HWTs. And I liked both fighters. Floyd was a true sportsman of a bygone era. Jerry came along a little later and may have been caught up a bit in the early days of "trash" talk. But can you imagine either man acting like some "gangsta" wannabe that many US fighters seem to think is sooo cooool? :-(
Stop hating, and get over it, guys from Eastern Europe (sorry Odo, but most people think of Russia, Ukraine, etc as East Euro) are at the top of the HWT division. There have been many exiting HWT fights this decade as others have noted. If I disliked a sport as much as some do here, I wouldn't waste my time posting on some board about it - unless I had too much time on my hands. :yep

The only people claiming that Wlad's fights are boring are the people who are pissed off that WK keeps winning in dominate fashion.
Take for example that Klit hater Suge White. He wants Wlad to go toe to toe with whatever big punchers he personally thinks are worthy of a shot such as that slow plodder Peter or that other no stamina bonehead Briggs.
Even though Wlad easily beat Peter he says he didn't walk out & leave his chin there to be hit like Jeremy Williams did. Well we all know how that fight ended & I'm glad Wlad's too smart of a fighter to let that happen to him from such a crude, slow, overated boxer like Peter. Instead Wlad played to his strengths & to Peter's weaknesses, just as any boxer should if they are good enough to dictate the pace & range like Wladimir does.

The only people claiming that Wlad's fights are boring are the people who are pissed off that WK keeps winning in dominate fashion. Exactly ! Kinda sad how insecure many ESB posters are that their "kind" or what they're used to seeing isn't dominating the HWT scene. It's funny how people claim they're all for "diversity" when they're on the oustside looking in. Turn the tables around and they're as big a bigot - often worse - than anyone else. :-( For about 50 years the HWT boxing was very un diverse. Mostly US fighters & mostly black US champs. Now that it has become more varied, all of a sudden it's "weak". Bullshit. I'm an American too (of East Euro decent).
Take for example that Klit hater Suge White. World class hater. He has said Wlad employed the grab & jab to defeat Peter. Suge must hate Ali, who perfected the grab n jab. :yep
I wonder if Suge and other Wlad haters have Ali in their top 10 all time

It was definently worse when it was Byrd, Ruiz, Brewster, and Vitali as champions.
:rofl :rofl :rofl :rofl :rofl     your avatar is fuckin hilarious:lol:
Hopefully if the right fights are made this should be a great year for heavies.I hope Ruslan can get healthy he's a big player and still undefeated.it will be interesting to see how Vitaly does and to see who wlad will fight next.It still is possible that the K's can get all the belts.....poor ol suge will be livid if that should happen:fire

All of the current HW champs are exciting to me & I'm American.
Hell no. You could be from Antartica for all I care, all the HW titlists are not exciting.
Who was the last HW you thought was exciting, if none now?
Lennox Lewis.
I just kills some people that Black Americans have lost their foothold in the Heavyweight division.
Why is it OK to use the race card on this site so much if you're white?

I think the HW's at the moment are the most exciting crop since the early 90's of Bowe, Lewis, Holyfield, etc. Wlad is the most exciting champ to watch since Tyson, Chagaev is a very active entertaining fighter, as is Maskaev, Povetkin, Vitali, and Peter. The American HW's at the moment seem to be on average 44years old and 8years past retirement, possibly why so many Americans are unhappy with the division right now. I can understand it in a way as i am also tired of watching Holyfield fighting for the past 30years, and I don't want to see mccall, ruiz, byrd, toney anymore either, maybe they can start up a masters division like in golf or tennis so we don't have to watch a 60yr old holyfield get decapitated by a Povetkin or Klitschko.

Hell no. You could be from Antartica for all I care, all the HW titlists are not exciting. Is that feather fisted guy in your avater "exciting" to you? If so, no wonder you don't like power punching HWTs like the K bros, Peter or others. :yep
Why is it OK to use the race card on this site so much if you're white? Most likely because its OK to use the race card if you're not white. It's called equal opportunity. Got a problem w/that? Btw, the race card is usually played the other way. Most "white" posters are reponding to illogical race baiting by others. I could give you examples of entire topics on this forum that are in very poor taste (re upcoming Taylor-Pavlik bout). I believe in having as much free expression as possible - especially on the net. And I'm not some "pc" kinda guy... But many posters start threads that are only for trolling. I wonder where the moderators are when jerks start some of these topics?
Anyway most aren't fooled when clowns on ESB refer to (almost only) white fighters as "robotic" or use other code phrases. There are and have been plenty of robotic black fighters (F Bruno a prime example - I liked Frank but he was as stiff as a board, even makes Vitali look like a ballerina  ). Is Lamon "I'll use my face against your fist, until I catch you" Brewster or Peter smooth dancers?
You don't like the current top HWTs because they're not form the US or for the other obvious reason.

Thanks, AJAX.
Zuras, have been generally agreeing w/you. I'm pro Lewis and K bros. Regarding LL & Wlad, I think they're very comparable. Similar size, punching power, so-so jaws (disagree w/the china chin claims - I'd like to see the small HWTs of the past get tagged from a Rahman, Sanders, or McCall shot. If those guys could do one thing it was punch big). I think a prime LL-Wlad fight would be a near toss up with a slight edge to LL. I wonder what Manny really thinks?
Not sure of your Tyson or Morrison reference above - I mean I'm not following you. But one thing I have to say - both were exciting fighters. KOs given & taken.

All I gotta say is that I am a Chagaev fan and I hope he comes back.
Chag VS Klit is a terrific fight, with the winner emerging as a very legitiamate champ.
has it been confimed he has hep?

has it been confimed he has hep?
Not that I know of, but it certainly sounds to me like he was diagnosed with something bad. One minute he's sighning for unification, teh next moments cancelling from a "chronic stomach ailment."
Sure sounds like he didn't really know he was sick.
Man, I hope he comes back.

They were both lightsout fighters. You just knew when either of them got into the ring, someone was gonna need some smelling salts or maybe a stretcher, them or their opponent. They were exciting because you never knew when the KO would come but you knew it was coming. Absolutely.
For some people that kind of exciting would be hard to recapture in the last several years or so of boxing, so I could understand why someone would say it was a more boring division, but not when naming Lewis as the last exciting heavyweight, especially with Vitaly back in the mix now. I don't think of LL as particularly exiting or boring. Just off the top of my head LL-Briggs, LL-Vitali were pretty exiting HWT bouts. Anyway, we're agreeing more than not.

the lennox era was exhilarating in comparison. what the hell happened? generally speaking, the better heavys seem to be able to fight well into their late 30s and still be a competitive force. did the young generation at the time just fizzle and die out? i know a good chunk of them have gone crazy ala golota, or just got fat and lazy eg tua. but, where the hell did all the rest go?
