ok, so i'm going to fight at my gym. im 44.5 KG and 5 foot 4, [yes, you can call me little paddy]. i am offensive minded, a banger, clumsy footwork, but hard to hit.

so, my power would work better if i weighed 48 KG my trainer says. the power wont bother me as my guard is really tight.

should i put on the weight, becoming a small target to hit for bigger opponents, adding power to my shots, or keep my weight as a busy, little counter-slugger.?

OK this is unhelpful. it's a dilemma. shall i put 3.5 KG's on or not?

He's only 5'4", so it's not that light considering his height. Why not stay at the weight you are at?

Even at that height... under 100 pounds! I know you are right going up in weight class if you're comfortable at the weight is illogical, it just amazed me how light he is.

Yeah that's very light. I'm an inch taller but weight 10kg more and I'm a lot lighter than I usually am at the moment.

I'm 5" taller (perhaps closer to 4" even) and outweigh him by 45 pounds.

stay at your natural weight, you may not have the power at a higher weight!

I do. i have decided to put on the weight, fighting bigger men, but using my defence and power. i will not reveal my full record but i will say i have won somewhere inbetween 25-37 fights, and lost about 5-10

My kid is the same height his weight is 145, Honestly I dont feel its a disadvantage to us at all, I feel we have turned that into an advantage honestly, its hard to fight a shorter man you have to find him, and usally by the time you find him he has already found you, simply because the taller man has to reach for him I always tell me kid to stay all the way out of range or all the way inside but keep them knees bent, this shortens his height even more making the other man have to figure out the range needed and in an amateur fight usally there isnt enough time.

So you've got over 30 amateur bouts and a good record, yet you're not comfortable with your weight and you're asking a bunch of strangers who know nothing about your style what to do?
What are your goals with gaining weight? If you're winning now with what you are doing, what are you hoping to accomplish with gaining weight?

a taller (bigger) fighter should never lose to a shorter (usually blown up) fighter. comes back to the point of the gameplan. if u let the smaller guy get all the way in and dont tie up or use ur legs ur giving up ur gameplan. i do preffer fighting taller/bigger guys because the target is bigger. but i wouldnt allow a shorter fighter to out work me with the jab or get all the way inside without eating uppercuts or 1-2's on the way in.

Of course not.

But considering I'm 16 and 5'7" and weigh around 130, I figured a fully grown adult would way more.

Not necessarily. Everyone is different. I have a friend who is 20 and he's 140 pounds and he's just over 6 feet tall.

yeah, well it depends. mike tyson was 5' 10 at 12 years old and 13 stone and he grew an inch after that. so, you never know. should i step up weight then?

P.S, i am prone to hooks, though they don't faze me. body shots do, but nobody works the smaller mans body.

id say it depends partly on ur power. do u have 1 punch kd power at ur weight class now? power isnt everything but being the smaller guy u want to have some pop if u choose to move up. only way to gain respect.

Irish Fire
08-27-2008, 04:41 PM
I do, but my punch output is maybe....30 a round? i counter. leave myself open, without dropping my hands, and counter. [effectively] but against a flicker [like a weak boxer, just jabs] i slip them, land body shots.

ok this is me in a nutshell.

Counterpuncher
Slugger
banger
Undersized
Clumsy feet
good chin
gets hooked lots
dody shoys.

Sounds like you should worry more about your defense at this point than your weight.

Irish Fire

I have a tight guard but i get tunnel vision and don't see hooks coming, but it's no worries. should i put on 3.5 KG!!??

BRICKS
08-27-2008, 04:55 PM
if ur open for that hook in the higher weight classes u will regret it. tighten up ur defense and work on ur footwork.

Irish Fire
08-27-2008, 04:59 PM
OK. though i have never been knocked down.

BRICKS
08-27-2008, 05:06 PM
the power range goes up with weight. im not saying u will be knocked down. but the possibilites are higher because u get caught by them and u know u get caught by them. id say tighted up ur defense some more and get ur footwork better and gradually put on more weight.

Irish Fire

i am developing a roll, weave, duck and slips style. works in sparring an=gainst my Buddy but none amteur slick-pretty boy Ben Collack. he throws it all, and i weave. [though he clocked me bang on the nose with an uppercut, just no power on it]

i might just sweat evrything off before a fight over the next 3 months but my actual weight in the ring getting steadily higher.

Sure, plenty. But come on, don't you think this guy is making most of this up?
A counter puncher/slugger/banger (impossible to be all three, by the way) with shoddy defense, crappy footwork, small for his size and somehow has a good amount of experience and a winning record but at the same time doesn't know what he should weigh? Come on. The only reason no one is calling him out on being full of crap is because 99% of the posters on this forum don't have the experience to see that he's full of it.

This is my opinion only. 100 pounds at 5 foot 4 inches IS too light. 5 foot 4 inch boxers normally fight at about 130 pounds. I would definitely aim for 106 pounds as your short team goal, and 130 pounds by the time you are 25 years old. As for bricks: I'm your same height and feel that you should weigh at least 140 pounds at that weight. I actually weigh higher at 154 pounds (I'm 5"10 even). I know someone can make an argument about the difficulty of going up in weight classes, but this is a unique situation.

Long Story Short: Go up to 106 Irish Fire. I recommend following a weight-lifting program 3 days a week. Each workout should last under an hour . Monday perform squats as your primary exercise and follow it with lower body exercises. Wednesday perform the bench press as your primary exercise and follow it with pushing exercises. Friday perform the deadlift as your primary exercise and follow it with pulling exercises. Avoid any isolations and make sure that you stick to the good compound exercises like bent-over-rows, pullups, military press, etc. Also make sure that you are eating at least 20X your bodyweight in calories and getting at least 1g of protein per pound you weigh. Don't neglect the necessities like fruits, vegetables, complex carbs, etc... and be sure to take a multivitamin daily. Whey protein is a good supplement if you are having trouble making your protein requirements for the day. I normally take one every day with breakfast. This will require some pretty hard work from you since you're mixing it in with boxing.

personally i weight what i do because i never lifted weights to bulk up. its my natural weight. before i stop fighting i will be around 145 fightin weight. theres no difficulty for me honestly. i have the power to move up if i feel like it. but my height advantage/power at featherweight will let me dominate a majority of my opponents. so i will move up when i feel its time, not because someone feels i should.

and i could careless if hes bullshitting. he has to look himself in the mirror for the rest of his days. so its on his shoulders not mine.
