Boswell TKOs Greenburg in 2nd!
By Matt Amato and Jose Santiago at Ringside
Heavyweight Cedric Boswell stopped hot prospect Roman Greenberg in the second round Friday at the Center Stage in Atlanta, Georgia. Boswell captured the IBF North American title and revived his sluggish career with the stunning victory. After a careful first round both fighters came out more aggressively in the second. Working behind his jab, Boswell landed a hard right hand that forced Greenburg to backpedal into the ropes. Boswell immediately jumped on Greenburg with a flurry of punches. Greenburg put his hands up in front of his face but Boswell penetrated his guard with a sneaky left hook followed by two thunderous right hands. Greenburg (27-1, 18 KOs) was virtually out on his feet when referee Bill Clancy stopped the contest at 2:05 of the second round. Boswell (28-1, 21 KOs), whose only loss is a tenth round TKO to Jameel McCline (Oct 2003), hopes the new belt will propel him into title reckoning. “It should put me back into the top ten and maybe a shot at the title,” stated the jubilant fighter to FightNews.

Why so funny?
Roman trains at my gym and is a genuinely nice geezer.
This was always going to be a step right up in class, boswell is no mug at all.
Why do we feel the need to laugh when a prospect gets stopped?
Have you seen it?
Are you laughing because being stopped by a heavy with 21 ko's is embarrassing?
Better fighters than Roman have lost before and will again.
He can come back from this and still mix in the top ten....

I think everyone doubted Greenberg would do anything great in his career but to hear that he lost is nothing to cheer about. Greenberg is a good bloke and not a bad fighter. Boswell has got his career back on track.

He can come back from this and still mix in the top ten....May be he is. I dont know the guy. But the facts remain his been protected for soooo long. There was audacious talk of him being a world class. He clearly is not. He was steered on that route for a reason so lets not kid ourselves here. As soon as he actually stepped into any class of any sort most believed Greenberg would get stopped. Im just glad the hype was firmly put to rest. I call it poetic justice! :D

I really didn't get this fight.
Roman fights 27 times and then makes quite a big step up all of a sudden to fight Boswell :?:huh
From Colin Kenna then straight to Boswell?
I'm not saying Boswell is great but Roman fought 27 times against pretty poor quality opposition and then chooses Boswell.

I guess he should've been fighting better opposition in those first 27 fights.
Learning how fight aggressively would've been a good idea too, rather than coasting around jabbing.

I am amazed that a black American heavyweight actually won a fight. What is the world coming to.

Stuey, my first reaction to the thread title was to laugh. Its nothing against the fighter personally but I think a lot of people could see this coming and knew it was just a matter of time.
There have a been a few threads on Greenburg on the Brit from people asking how far he could go and how good he was and, while most peoples opinion was that he'll get KO'd as soon as he made any move up in class, some people did actually think he could make an impact a world level.

I've got nothing against Greenberg personally, but he has been so overprotected and in 27 fights has made little or no impact on the world stage.
Boswell is no mug at all so these posts will be full of people saying what they have been saying for ages. I told you so. Step him up in class and he'll get a tuning.

I forgot about Boswell, but remember he was being talked up a lot before McCline stopped him (I think he was leading at the time). He's probably good enough to hang with the top 10 heavies and beat some.
I see he beat Tyson clone Cliff Couser last month
as for Greenberg.....who really thought he was world class? surely not.

Stuey mate, I can see your point but obviously as you know him it makes it different for you.
The fact is Greenberg was being hyped YEARS ago. And then more hype started from nowhere last year...I had actually forgotten about him, he was being talked up 5 years back. It seems a lifetime ago.
And he has been horribly protected. I guess people are just glad to see him actually fight someone with a pulse and the stupid overrating of him finally stop.

I always said he is overrated. I never expected him to go anywhere. His game needed serious work and he never did it, yet got praise.

Exactly. He was hyped from the days BBC were trying to bring back boxing.

Not sure if this story is correct but did'nt Jim Watt get fired by Eurosport for saying Greenberg was pants during one of Roman's fights?

That was Colin Hart not Watt.
I think it was Beeston Brawler that brought that up on another thread a few weeks ago.

Never thought he would get anywhere...boring, boring fighter too.

I saw Greenburg fight in Madison Square Garden in 2007. He is strong and his hands are fairly quick, but his overall body movement is ponderous and he is easy to hit.
Guys like Greenburg are always taking risks when they face big punchers. Without a good defense or a cast iron chin, they tend to get knocked out.

Greenburg would need to train much harder than he does and lose weight. In training much harder, his stamina, endurance and conditioning would improve. On top of that he'd need to his improved stamina to up his awful workrate (from what I've seen anyway). Then he'd need a coach to improve his entire game - inside fighting, combos, body work, defence etc
Greenburg can improve. My only problem is the disgusting hype around him. I don't mean it rudely but he deserves absolutely no hype. People moan about Khan getting hype but he deserves it. Is it because Greenburg is white or Jewish that he gets hype??? I don't get it.

You can only be disappointed when you expect something to happen and it doesn't. Nothing was expected of any of those men.

Exactly. People need to stop putting hope in such weak looking fighters. From the word go these guys don't show any potential to be anything remotely close to a great. I mean that is what we are after isn't it! A great heavyweight who can take over and dominate. An Ali, Tyson, Holmes, Lewis etc
Funnily enough, the closest we have to that is still the Klitchskos and it has been since just before Lewis retired and it will stay that way for the forseeable future!
Unless Haye has something to say about it :)
Haye and Povetkin are probably the only chance at the moment. Hopefully Povetkin will have some answers for the likes of Wlad and Vitali. If he doesn't then he can't achieve what we want.

He might be a nice guy but that does not mean anything in the ring.
It is quiet funny because many of us always thought he was an average plodder with nothing world class about him (not even fringe world class).
If anyone thought he was a prospect then they need their heads checking.

He may be an Isreali heavy but he fought primarily here in Britain. He didnt even mix it up on the domestic scene. His ledger was littered with absolute nobodies. His never fought for any title of any meaning and after 27 fights gets chucked in the deep end with his most serious opponent to date. The result was hardly surprising and throughly laughable. The kid should sack hs handlers.

Sadly, that's the fight that really soured me to Greenberg as well.
Dreadful fight, Francis slowly plodding forward into a steady hail of about 6 punches a round from the retreating Greenberg. Bloody awful, the only fight worse than Byrd-Williamson I've seen in recent years.

Boswell has been very inactive and has had several injuries and surgeries the past 3 years so I think Greenburg's people thought he could beat Boswell because of this.
Remember Boswell was to be Vitali Klitschko opponent on the night that he ended up fighting Lennox Lewis when Kirk Johnson pulled out with an injury. Boswell was up on the scorecards 8-1 when he was KOed by McCline in the 10th do to exhaustion. Boswell is a decent fighter he has just had some bad luck mostly with injuries.

Fuck yeah. It was his chance to shine against a punch bag and he couldnt even do that. He could have been reeling off combos like he was the second coming of Ali. A past it Tyson starched Francis so a supposed real prospect sure as hell don't look like shit against a past it Francis!
I hate it when people call someone like Khan hyped and overrated when we have fighters like Greenburg around.

Yeah, I agree. It's sad when fighters think they are cute but they really aren't. Being boring, not going for the ko etc isn't the sweet science.
