View Full Version : Most misleading records?

Basically, the best fighters with the "worst" records at a passing glance.

Livingstone Bramble comes to mind. 40-26.

Braddock's 51-26 comes to mind as well.

Most wouldn't assume one of the greatest fighters of all time would have a 90-25 record, like Ezzard Charles does.

And speaking of Ezzard, Jersey Joe comes to mind. 51-18.

Not putting any of these guys down, just saying the uninformed could very well come to the wrong conclusion just looking at the numbers.

66 times people thought he should be an easy win. He showed them they were wrong.

Guys lost close to 300 times but only been KO'ed a handful of times.

Christ, reminds me of Ross Purrity times ten.

Freddie Pendleton wasn't too bad either and his record was something like

47-26-5-34.

Ali 56-5

He can be lucky that he got some strange decisions, otherwise he would have at least 2 defeats more... :hey

What strange decisions, Luigi?

Yeah. Even the hugely uninformed wouldn't look at that record and think anything bad of it, though.

Perhaps Ken Norton? Young? Never saw that fights objective? Some questionables stoppages who were way too early over... Ali is lucky to retired with 56-5...

I have seen both those fights. He didn't lose them. Norton was close, but Kenny blew the last round. Young wasn't close. You don't win fights by trying to run out of the ring (or whatever the hell it was Young was doing). I don't know what fights were questionable stoppages. You can't be talking about Lyle. Ali had Lyle in all kinds of trouble and Lyle was returning no fire. I have never counted how many unanswered punches Lyle was hit with, but they must have numbered in the several dozen.

It sounds to me like you are biased against Ali in a big way. You're running down the best heavyweight who ever lived. Is that what bugs you? That he was so great? Is there some other heavyweight or heavyweights you wish people would recognize were better?

IMO itīs out of question that Ali is one of the greatest fighters ever. But I criticized that someone named Aliīs 56-5- record as a perfect example for misleading record, as if he was unbeatable or so, you get now what I meant?

Fritzie Zivic is perhaps the best example.

He retired with a record of 157-65-10 yet he is to my mind a pound for pound great. Henry Armstrong would have had no easy time with him even at his peak.

Tiger Ted Lowry had a record of 67W(43KO)+67L(Only three by kayo)+10D. Best known for having gone the distance with Marciano twice without hitting the deck. Also the only one to last the distance twice against Billy Fox, drawing with Fox in their initial meeting. Went the distance twice with LaStarza. Also went the distance with Tiger Jack Fox, Joey Maxim, Jimmy Bivens, drew with Lee Savold and Lee Oma. A tough, resourceful warhorse. (Marciano said if he fought Lowry a hundred times, the match would go the distance a hundred times.)

darnell boone 14-10
such a good fighter compact speedy doenst have the power but is always in shape he just doesnt have the reach and hieght ..and with little power he is really helpless but his boxing skills and defence is amazing.

robbed all the time i have a fight on espn of him against this undefeated prospect and him totally outboxing him in speed, agilty and those combo's i dindt see him lose a single round. and got robbed real shame.

Did he get a lot of bad decisions, lot of close fights, just bad luck to have fought so many greats... What?

johnny nelson 45-12

possibly the most boring fighter ever to brace the clench of a belt...but he did know his stuff and if not getting hit is an art he was a artist at it he was very quick ,tall and unorthodox but his style was stunningly un-crowd pleasing

but his jab power and tactics made him a hard opponant if you beat him in his prime you got a very big well done sticker.

it's also his poor amateur record that amazes me 17 fights with 4 wins!

Johnny's career is all kinds of weird anyway! The kind of thing no-one would believe if he was a fictional character...

Mike Weaver was a better fighter than his 41-18-1 record would suggest.

Rocky Marciano's 49-0. You'd think he was an all-time great, but if you look closely, you'll see he only fought old men, journeymen and light heavyweights.

Fritzie Zivic fought as a journeyman for several years before he made boxing his full time job.

During this period he fought verry frequently against high grade opposition and wore the cuffs a lot.

The difference between Nelson's highlights and Hopkins' highlights would be that whereas Nelson's have 3 connected punches, Hopkins would have 3 headbutts and no cleanly connecting punches.
