If you are of Irish descent, why's it matter where you're born? As long as you're of Irish blood, you should be able to refer to yourself as Irish.

Calling yourself 'Irish' because your Great Great Great Grandfather on your mothers side was from Dublin.....:patsch

You're American. I know its not nice but just deal with it.;)

If you are of Irish descent, why's it matter where you're born? As long as you're of Irish blood, you should be able to refer to yourself as Irish.

If someone has never been to or lived in Ireland they should only refer to themselves as Irish if they are of pure Irish blood(both parents are Irish) , other wise they are as Irish as those ornamental Irish cottages(which are actually made in China/Taiwan) .

BigEars
07-29-2007, 07:44 PM
Why would I be ashmed to be American? We're the greatest country in the world :bart

So if my parents are both from China, but I was born in America, and I'm filling out an application, I'm not allowed to check "Asian" just because I wasnt born there? :huh

When someone says "I'm Irish", that does not automatically translate into "i'm from Ireland". It means "I'm of Irish descent"

If you ask them for their nationality, obviously they'll have to say "American"

If someone asks "what you are", they are reffering to your ancestry.. in which case, an Irish-American is allowed to say "I'm Irish"
Only in America , in the rest of the World , I'm Irish=nationality .
How come no American would ever respond with 'I'm British' to you're 'what are you question' even if they were of British decent ?

GazOC
07-29-2007, 07:48 PM
If someone asks "what you are", they are reffering to your ancestry.. in which case, an Irish-American is allowed to say "I'm Irish"

So what makes them Irish? One Irish parent? 2 Irish Grandparents? I'd guess most so-called 'Irish-Americans' don't even have that?

What about the other nationalities in their gene pool, or do they just pick the one that suits them?

GazOC
07-29-2007, 07:50 PM

Probably cause Brits hate Americans and vice versa...
But think about it , only a select ethnic origins are given by people , Mexican , Porto Rican , Irish but never German , Australian , Portugeuse .

Some people are proud of their ethnic routs , nothing wrong with that .
However someone who has never been to Ireland and does not have two irish parents does not deserve the right to call themselves Irish . They have the right to call themselves of Irish descent(if they have that) or call themselves American(presuming they're American) and that's it .

GazOC

PR has never been in Britsh hands. Also, we are a Country, just not a republic. We are sort of a Colony of the US since 1898, when we were a Colony of Spain.

Ironic, our people are sent to war in Iraq to bring DEMOCRACY to a country, and we are sent by a president that we have NO RIGHT to vote for.

Every federal law applies here, even though we dont have a congressman or senator to vote for those laws.

Probably cause Brits hate Americans and vice versa...

I dont hate Americans.

David Bowie is scared of them though.

I think this issue re: Irish Americans/Identity is one of semantics. America has such a rich tapestry of cultures that they will commonly refer to themselves as African-American, Irish-American, Hispanic-American etc etc.

Over here in Blighty it's judged by what Passport you hold. Hence why if you have an American Passport but your parents are both Irish, we would still consider you to be American. There is a large Asian (India/****stan/Bangladesh rather than China/Japan etc) community in Britain with a lot of Asian kids born and bred here in the UK. I know several and they refer to themselves as being British. To use a Boxer take Amir Khan as an example. Of course their heritage is from elsewhere but they are British by virtue of being born and brought up here.

I think one aspect of why Irish americans are so quick to idetify themselves as Irish may be because there used to be a large amount of anti-catholic\irish sentiment in the u.s. Therefore the pride their parents had in standing up to that is passed down through the generations.

This guy was supposedly proud of being an American, and acted as though he were offended by the Rahman-Maskaev bout being billed as "America's Last Line of Defense." He was so genuine, that shortly after obtaining Russian citizenship, he says "I'm Russian...(and says that's all he cares to say on the subject)"

Russians would be smart to turn their backs on this guy like he did to them already. No matter, the KLITs are the former Soviet's "real champs" anyways.
