All of my years running (and it's been many of them), i have never listened to music when running. When i started running, portable audio wasn't really at the stage where you could carry it around.

Anyway, i was at an electronics/hi fi shop yesterday to buy some dvdrs and i saw some really cheap tiny mp3 players (i already have a 600 dollar top of the range mp3/mp4 player, no way i would take that running). I got a 1 gig model on special for only $15. I expected it to be really craphouse, but it's great ! loaded with features, fm radio, rechargable via usb, shuffle play etc etc.

This morning i did a mid range LSD (Long STEADY Distance, not Long SLOW Distance) of 8km (5 miles). I had done some hard 800m intervals the day before, so i didn't want to go too fast. I cranked out the 8km/5mile in 31 minutes which for me is pretty slow, but it felt so different with the music ! time just went like that and i felt i was on total autopilot, even more so than normal.

I don't think i will take music along for interval sessions and time trials, but for these LSD runs, it's very helpful

Do you run with music ?

I did when I ran LSD. Now I only do sprints.

Although, I do listen to music when I'm in the gym as well.

yes. and its serve also as a guide on how many minutes have you been running. you should have an idea of how long was each track to do this.

In my training runs, yes.. I use it to keep track of my pace and timing, as well as use songs to motivate me during parts where I'm trying to get my second wind.

Competitively, not allowed.

I used to, but have seemed to have gotten out of the habit of listening to music on my LSD runs. But I always listen to music before I go on a run so I always have the last song in my head throughout the run anyway.

I either run with music or I watch TV when I run on a treadmill. I happen to train with an MMA fighter who lives in a gated community with a private gym thing with TVs. I just usually bring my ZEN W player, plug in the video ports to the TV and play a fight, and watch it as I run, time flys when watching something you like.

Yes i listen to music when i run. Keeps me from geting bored on the long runs and as someone said makes the time go faster. One of my favorite things to do is to run at night in the forrest with some tunes on... Feels realy good.

Yes on the gym treadmill I could not do without it. I get bored very easily on the treadmill but the tunes keep it interesting, time goes quicker.
