watching the fight yesterday, i was appalled at the lack of urgency or tactical advice from brendon smith to katsidas....

smith never offered a way to approach diaz, opportunities he could see that diaz was providing. nor did he tell kat to change anything despite being beaten most rounds.

even kellerman was amazed at how slack kats corner was.....(which just occured to me, may see kat with a different corner soon)

have you seen a worse corner performance? i havent.

He lost by SD so you can't really say he was far off the mark. In the last fight with casamayor he tried to get kat to put more pressure on in the tenth and we saw the result of that......so i'm guessing he didn't want to try that again even though he was behind on the cards.

pretty bad but not the worst i have ever seen

in the early 90's Mike Tyson had some shockers. Especially the guy that trained him for his 2nd bout with RUddock ahaha.

the lack of urgency was pretty bad from him, but Katsidis must have known he was copping a flogging

better you pull out and re type your offending post, before you enter your mother....

and then you can give us all an insight into just what you though was brilliant about smiths corner performance...otherwise you havent an opinion, and are just flaming those that do. so put up some evidence as to brendons great performance ....or shut the fuck up...

This is Brenden Smith's job. He took Mick from a pretty crude slugger all the way to the top, even with a layoff for jail time. Gotta respect that, he is no mug trainer.

I just cant for the life of me see how he saw things the way he saw them. It was like there was a bubble around the Katsidas corner and whatever they saw out of it was distorted.
Sometimes a fighter isnt good enough to go that extra level up, just doesnt have the skills, talent or mindset. Maybe the same can be said of some trainers.

I don't think he's the worst cornerman at all. Katsidis just needs new direction, and that means Smith needs to let his fighter go. He simply can't cater for Katsidis at the moment, I think it's too much for him, but certaintly does not mean he is a bad cornerman.

Kat should send a S.O.S. to johnny lewis

if he wants to get his career back on track he cant do it with smith in his corner.

even if we give smith the benefit of the doubt that he may have actually thought kat was winning.....it doesnt explain smiths failure to make any observations on diaz to kat and what he may do about it...

he gave no guidence whatsoever.....

id just like to say im not having a go at him as a bloke. but hes up for comment as he is now the trainer of a high profile fighter...

The whole trainer thing is off beam and irrelevant.

Brendan's job is primarily to prepare Katsidis for battle. He does a pretty good job of it. Katsidis lost yesterday becaue Juan was just too good.

Mick changed things up at the half way point and got some more distance and movement and it helped to a degree...he took less punishment and sneaked a few rds in my opinion. He was getting beaten too much in close.

So what was Brenadan supposed to say to him in between rds that was going to make him a better fighter than Juan? Tell him he is getting his ass kicked and he needed a ko to win? Rarely works.

He knows his fighter. I wont stomp on him for maybe trying to preserve his fighter a little by applauding his work on the outside. It worked alot better for him and he did less damage to himself.

Brendan couldn't transform Mick in to a better fighter than Juan in between rounds. End of story.

I was a bit surprised with the lack of advice from the corner but I doubt it would have made much difference to the end result.

nobody knows kat like Brendan.it was good the way he guided kat from exploding like the way he did last time.
it didnt seem to be a close fight and diaz won it because he was a better boxer and as said before brendan stopped him from getting hurt.

i can't believe how tough you are on brendan. he took the kid to the championship of the world. he's boxed some of the biggest names out there and he must know what his fighter responds to and that is the key. not every trainer has to slap the face and chest to get their point through. Brendan and Katz have an understanding like all close Boxer / trainer relationships. Brendan would be different to another fighter he has it all depends on their specific makeup / personality. Not only does he have to remain calm in a place screaming for Diaz he also must ensure the cuts and bruisers are being sorted in between other duties. We cannot hear what is being said for the whole min while Brendan is talking to his charge. Peronsally I felt Katz was doing well from the outside and fought a little to much on the inside but he knew he needed to take the fight from Diaz as he would have never got a decison. I also thought he was falling over his punches a little and wasnt sitting on his punches but its very easy to say from here. Diaz was sharp and quick and won the fight with his jab.

maybe he knew the hand was broken so he didn't want to crack the whip on Katsidis too hard, maybe Kats was freaked out to have a broken hand so smith had to calm him down

just speculating

I wondered the whole fight why Smith wasn't telling him to step on it, no urgency at all, losing rounds and not doing that much damage to Diaz

weird

dino, did you hear brendon giving kat advice on how to deal with diaz jab? or explain how diaz was getting off first etc? i didnt!!!!

he offered NO tactical advice. no comment on how to deal with what diaz was doing....said nothing on how kat may be more effective.....

There are reports he either sprained or broke his hand in the fourth.
