One of my favorite films. I am a big Russel Crow fand and Ron Howard is very talented, Giamati is always great too. I went to the cinema to see the film and watched it again last night. Like most hollywood films it gets certain aspects wrong for dramatic affect but on the whole it is pretty accurate. I had just started rteading about some of the old boxers when that fim first came out and I think I may start again. Max Bear could have been an ATG if had had the right attitude to training when in his prime, by the time he had started to take boxing seriously he was past his prime and Joe Louis had come to peak.

The film is good apart from its portrayal of Baer as a bad guy.

Yep. I did not like his portayal. He is one of my favorite old timers. His brother was pretty handy.

Hollywood shafted Joey Giardello when making "Hurricane" as well.

Sadly these things are always written that way. You would think Foreman and Frazier were card carrying memebers of the KKK the way they are portrayed for having the front to fight Ali.
Decent movie though I quite enjoyed it . Its no "Undisputed" though hahahahahahahahah

did baer really kill two people in the ring?
Yes that is true apparently, but he was also a Gentleman and not how they made him out in the film.

No he killed one in the ring but felt really bad about it for the rest of his life. He gave portions of his purse to the fighters family.
A second man died and it was reported at the time as Bears fault but this has since been changed. Baer was a decent guy and a good fighter. The fight between Baer and Braddock is pretty much bang on of what happened including the style.

Yeah, I thought that, the boxers who died in the ring with him troubled him for the rest of his life.
But on the other hand that his public persona was not that disimiliar to the way he was portrayed from what i've read. I also thought Vince Vaughn should have played Baer.

I have always thought that he was a likeable fellow and not a twat like he is in the film, I doubt very much that he would have bragged about the deaths of those men or that he would have had crude behavior towards Braddock or his wife. I thought the actor playing Baer was a decent likeness although when clean shaven Baer had more than a passing resemblence to Herrol Fllyn.

As I understand it one guy died in a fight with him and one in his next fight after fighting him, but that was more likely due to the menigitis he suffered between the Baer fight and his last.
He wasnt the nasty guy portrayed though, he supported the family of the guy he killed, and was a lighthearted joker both in and out of the ring.

wow, so baer was portrayed badly then, despite being a nice guy, i didnt think he would be that much of a twat in real life to be honest

One of the things that fired my imagination and got me into boxing were the biographies of the old fighters. I've got jack shit imagination either but for some reason these books fascinated me.
Carnera, Louis, Dempsey and loads of others... Cooper, Ali, Liston, Tyson, Lewis, Minter...
Used to nick them from the local library, christ knows why, they would have let me borrow them I'm sure!
Never been one for the films though, can't deal with the unrealistic fight scenes and Hollywood manipulation.

The fight scenes in Cinderella man are pretty damm good and definetly have the look of some of the old Braddock footage.
Yep the old timers are the reason I got into the sport.

You have to say that physically Crowe did an excellent job of playing Braddock. He had his stance down perfectly for instance.

Crow is one of my favorite current actors. He was great in that fim and got Braddock bang on.

Good good film, The same as others, the Baer portrayal wasn't right but I guess that's Hollywood and it's need for a villain.
You can hardly have the baddie as some lovable old teddy bear.

Not being a willowy blond in an evening gown, I dare say he wouldn't have had much time for me!
Forgot to mention, read a great book about Braddock which included a lot about Baer, called ...suprisingly......Cinderella Man by Michael C. DeLisa

I've not read Baers book but I've read quite a few from around that time and I've never heard Baer criticized other than for being a playboy who didn't take his training too seriously. He did fuck about with Carneras head before and during their fight but nothing too nasty.
