This is for anyone who wants to ask the MMA forum's advice on anything training-related. Weightlifting, equipment, sparring, martial arts styles, etc.

Discussion of any aspect of MMA training is encouraged. And I'll also be willing to give bits of advice whenever I can. :D

Re: Toughening skin--I wouldn't recommend it. I don't know if it works, but it doesn't sound like a good idea. The best advice I could give would be this--ask a dermatologist. The best way to "toughen" your skin is to keep it healthy, and pickling it doesn't seem sensible to me.

Some dermatology resources:

Punch absorption--I don't know of any reputable studies on learning to take a punch, aside from one which was related to soccer concussions.

Don't take any more punches than you need to, and practice "rolling" with them constantly in light sparring to minimize their impact. Remember that getting a concussion makes another one MORE likely, so don't go too heavily to the head during sparring without proper protection.

Ironically, the key to a stronger chin is to NOT get hit too much. Practice rolling with punches and with defense, but don't absorb more than you need to.

Unless it is legal, I'm afraid you can't. Since you mentioned it, though, I assume that people will ask you via PM anyway.

Appreciate the links. Would love to see some links though discussing the technical side of MMA, particularly the BJJ and wrestling if anyone has any. Thanks.

I'm having trouble with the flying triangle choke, from the guard I can set it up and pull it off very well and very tight, but not the air.

Any non-mainstream tips? I set up my guard triangles from a more awkward manner.

Flying triangle choke? What a waste of energy. It's a low percentage move even if you have down well. I'd say just don't do it.

I like FRS as a supplement for anyone. Its designed to allow one to utilize energy efficiently, helps in weight loss and recovery on a cellular level. Its not your typical energy drink crammed with taurine, caffeine, and sugar. Actually a type of flavinoid concentrate.. Lance Armstrong uses it, but more importantly, so do I. :D

I'd recommend the A-Z vitamins, along with cod liver oil.

Along with what cross trainer said about absorbing punches, train your neck more with neck bridges, standing isometrics (pushing your head to one side and resisting), and neck curls with a harness if you have one.

The only thing I take is Whey Protein. Try Designer Whey. It taste great and is one of the best Protein supplements I've taken. You can buy it at countless retailers in the U.S. or internationally.

Most importantly though, GREENS. Veggies are the way to go my friend.

How long before a fight do you weigh in? You might try searching for marathon runners pre race meals. I came up with this page. I would think they have been doing this long enough that the science is behind what they do. Adapt to suit your purposes.

Hard.. I've seen guys who train with me do pizza without crust, sandwiches without oil, mayo and multigrain bread, or do sandwich and take off half of the bread..
When I don't have to go home and cook I do that sandwich thing a lot.

Anyone have any good exercises for improving balance?

Balance is often what you are born with. I can't do grappling for shit but when I did train in MMA, I'd always been told I had excellent balance, especially on one leg. (think one leg grabbed, pivot/push/bow kind situation)

But! I think there are some excercise that can help you maximize your inner ear by getting those small muscles co-ordinated and strong. Standing on those balance ball things, holding kick stances with leg chambered one one leg, doing a lot stretches where you have one leg up..
