Don't gamble big.
Been down that road.
It doesn't actually have an end.

I have a perfect record, I never lose. I've made one bet in my career with a deranged Gatti fan who felt like he would be FMJ because he had more heart. LOL, I got even money too.

..............I never bet. I look at it as just throwing money away. I do, however, have a friend who likes to bet on fights because he knows I know a little about it. I'm no expert on today's fight game, so sometimes I just say "pass" if he gives me one I simply don't know, but on the big fights I've only been wrong once, on the Cotto-Margarito fight. I thought Cotto would take a decision.

............Aha! I see we have something in common. My name is also Matt. :D Yes, that's right, Matt Sanchezfan. :yep
I see Pavlik winning a unanimous decision, John. He demands a hard pace, not so much because of a huge number of punches thrown, but because he just exerts a presence on you, and always seems on top of his opponent. Hopkins can't handle a hard pace any more.

Cheers Sal, i am inclined to agree. Pavlik soaks up a fine shot too so he'll be a big fave here.

So do I
I still mock Abe about it. During the first round when it became apparent to him what a mistake he made, the trash talk began.

I won a few thousand on Holyfield-Tyson I. I've kept a perfect record since by retiring -immediately- from real betting.

I don't bet real money, but i've tripled my v-cash since february this year. I only took bets that i thought were worthwhile though.
I mainly don't bet because i want to enjoy a boxing match, instead of cheering for whatever outcome i put my money on. It's addictive.

A few I called right recently:
Hopkins-Calazage,
Calazage-Kessler,
Marquez-Casa
Diaz-Katsidis
Mayweather-Hatton
Guzman-Soto
Williams-Margarito
A few I got completely wrong:
Cotto-Margarito
Cotto-Mosley
Cotto-Judah
Hatton-Tyszu
Taylor-Pavlik 1
Some fights are just hard to pick, and anything can happen in boxing, who would have picked Laing over Duran? Douglas over Tyson. I never bet on boxing for this reason

Ha. I had a pretty good streak going for a couple of years in big fights, (back to Pacquiao-Morales 2) until Cotto-Margarito. I picked Cotto, but I was worried about it because of him showing chin problems, and Margarito on the other side had his insane workrate and granite chin. Sure enough I had reason to be nervous about it.
There were a couple of times I thought I should make a bet on my picks during that streak, but I never wound up doing it.

I haven't bet in a while but I used to do quite well in the late 90's early 00's. Vegas was always pretty kind to me but taking side bets on Tyson defeats was a cottage industry.

I won like $1500 on the Trinidad-Hopkins fight seven years ago. The odds makers made a huge mistake putting Trinidad a 3-1 favorite. Hopkins was the naturally bigger man, a career middleweight who was champ for 7 years and had a rock solid chin. Trinidad was only having his second bout at middleweight and had been down several times in his career against smaller men. Also take into consideration the 9-11 factor. The fight wqas postponed 2 weeks because of 9-11. All Hopkins had to do was drive 90 miles south back to Philly and continue with his training. Tito was stuck in NYC from his native PR in the scariest and most chaotic time in the city's history. Put all these factors together and you had an easy payday.

I don't make any money (or bet for that matter) on fights, but somehow I've been known to spit out some on-the-spot wisdom that people have taken to the bank.
For example:
Kelly Pavlik Vs. Jermain Taylor - I was sitting at the bar and I got a call from a friend, "Hey! We're about to order the fight and I'm curious what you think is gonna happen." My response was , "Heh, I'd say the fight isn't gonna last 8 rounds, an' one of 'em is gonna get KO'ed....I'd pick Pavlik. Taylor's ripe to be upset." I went over to their house to watch the fight with them and my friend was on the edge of his seat the entire time (he didn't tell me he bet yet). Right when they called it in the 7th round for Pavlik I sat there smugly feeling like I did my work, spot on. My friend was hopping and dacning around the room. I thought he was just a big Pavlik fan. Then finally settles and turns to me and says, "You just scored me $520, got any other advice?". My smug feeling was diminished and I just shook my head no.
I'm no pure expert, but I am willing to admit I have an obsession with the sport. I've called some other fights, but I'd have to say that one is my best so far.

As soon as Mexican's go back to brawling all the time and the betters back them with both hands. The theory was this, in the lower weights, go with the speedy boxer with more skills over the bigger puncher.
There were some close money lines years back in the lower weights when the boxer meet the puncher.
