Posted this on the general as well. Is this a good move or should the two sports stay separate?

LAS VEGAS -- Golden Boy Promotions, one of the leading boxing promotional companies in the world, is branching out into mixed martial arts, CEO Richard Schaefer announced Saturday at a news conference at the MGM Grand.

Golden Boy Promotions, which is promoting the Joel Casamayor-Juan Manuel Marquez lightweight title fight here on Saturday night, took a break from boxing to talk MMA in announcing a partnership with Affliction, a fledgling MMA promoter and apparel company known for its hip T-shirts.

"We have started looking at mixed martial arts and we finally decided to throw our hat into the mixed martial arts ring," Schaefer said. "I think there are some tremendous opportunities for crossover promotions and to team up with an iconic brand such as Affliction is a big step for us."

Golden Boy and Affliction will partner 50-50 on at least four pay-per-view shows next year that will include boxing matches and MMA fights on the same card. Smaller promoters have paired the two sports on cards, but never at the top level.

"We're looking to put together top MMA fighters as well as top boxers in one night. I think the two worlds have finally merged, and this is a perfect example," Affliction vice president Tom Atencio said.

Affliction, whose apparel is popular with many MMA fighters and boxers such as Kelly Pavlik and Bernard Hopkins, promoted its first MMA event July 19 in Anaheim, Calif. A second show was scheduled for Oct. 11 in Las Vegas but postponed because of lagging ticket sales.

The main event was supposed to be a heavyweight match between Andrei Arlovski and Josh Barnett with the winner expected to face Fedor Emelianenko.

When the card was called off, Golden Boy attempted to have Arlovski-Barnett rescheduled as part of the Oct. 18 Pavlik-Hopkins HBO PPV card. However, co-promoter Top Rank and HBO rejected the overture.
"They presented us with the option and we respectfully declined," HBO PPV chief Mark Taffet told ESPN.com.

As part of its deal with Golden Boy, Affliction will produce a line of event T-shirts for Golden Boy fights to sell at retail locations and at the fight. The first fight it will make shirts for is the Dec. 6 match between Golden Boy boss Oscar De La Hoya and Manny Pacquiao. In addition, Affliction will become the official apparel licensee for Ring Magazine, which Golden Boy bought last year. It unveiled several sample T-shirts featuring old covers of Ring magazine, including ones of Sugar Ray Robinson.

Now the UFC has some competition. Golden Boy has the money to keep Affliction going for a while.

It won't be that hard to do, as far as production wise. They can all fight in the same ring. I see boxing use some of the same officials as mma, like judging(which I'll reserve my problems with for another discussion).

If they use boxers that are a big draw, then mma will be exposed to new fans. Fans that don't have to buy in because of the UFC brand name. They will be introduced to the Affliction brand name. They will also be introduced to arguably the world's best fighter, Fedor.

This could make the UFC's negotiating with the top fighters interesting. This will also keep the UFC's cards on a high caliber.

I wonder what Dana thinks of this.

i always wondered how amazing this would be in a dream world, i personally am shocked that this is really happening!!!!!

lets hope it does

i dont think dana is impressed with this at all. i have a feeling affliction may take over ufc cos they promote real good, they pay their fighters far more than the ufc do and now affliction is teamed with GBP's, this can only do good for mma/affliction.

Good for mma, not so good for boxing

I think it's a good idea. The boxing matches should probably be 4 or 6 rounders to keep the card moving quickly. In reality - boxing fans will probably avoid something like this while MMA fans will buy it anyway and have to endure some bad boxing on undercards.

What this means in the long run is anyone's guess - but in the short run it means we will see Fedor on American PPV for the rest of 2009.

It's intriguing...I guess we'll just have to wait and see. I think this type of association will be a first. (pride once did the experience with K1 and they'll do it again on nye i think)..

Could be good news for boxing and MMA alike. Hopefully this may mean better boxing match ups and better cards.

Could potentially work if they put a big boxing name on the card. This could help MMA, because boxing fans would be exposed to Fedor and other stars, and help boxing, because MMA fans would be exposed to big names in boxing. Win-win here. The only problem is the change in dynamic. Boxing fights are longer, while MMA fighters are more explosive but can be off-putting when the fight goes to the ground to a boxing fan. Not sure if this will work well.

But having someone like De La Hoya and Fedor on the same fight card could be very interesting for both sports.

So is the consensus here that MMA fans are alright with this. Because most of the boxing fans would not pay to watch if MMA was on it. Just going by the responses in general forum.

Sounds about right. I would say that seasoned MMA fans watch both boxing and MMA on a regular basis whereas boxing fans tend to ignore MMA and see it as a threat to their sport. I have no idea why though.

WFA, IFL, EliteXC, BoDog, PrideUSA, M1.

Its a really hard thing to do.

You got to love DLH thinking. And what a way to keep boxing in the spotlight

This COULD be good for MMA, but I'm not going to hold my breath.

The first thing MMA needs is competition for the UFC, this much is true. The last thing it needs, however, are crooked boxing promoters getting involved.

It should be interesting how it plays out. Since I watch both, I don't mind it at all, but if they want this to be successful, i think they would want to display the more exciting type of fights on both ends to transition each sport to the opposite fans.

i think the two sports need to stay apart from one another.

i like mma and boxing but i feel that they bring two totally different atmospheres that would possibly not mesh well together.

to different if you ask me.
