Who'd win this battle of probably the two hardest punchers to campaign at this weight? (Apologies to Tommy Hearns)
Since both men were always on the lookout for a KO I'm certain this fight won't go the distance but it's sure to be interesting while it lasts.
Personally I think Jackson was the more polished and resiliant fighter which gives me reason to favour him ever so slightly.Still they both had scary power and were vulnerable to each of the others strengths, which makes this a very interesting match up imo.
I'll go with Jackson by KO in 3.

I like Jackson. His resume is much better and he has the better boxing skills and very decent handspeed. Just a better and sharper fighter, tho obviously he sure as hell doesn't want to get careless, becausae the one thing Mugabi has is massive power.

Jackson IMO.
Mugabi gets overrated off of a fight he ultimately lost (Hagler).
Mugabi made his name bombing out faded TV fighters (ie: Frank Fletcher). He had no real defense or boxing skill. The only advantage Mugabi may have here is chin, and even that's questionable, as he has been embarassingly KO'd a few times himself (though unlike Jackson, he often gets excused for most of his KO losses). Jackson is a much more skilled and better all-around fighter (particularly at 154, before he injured his eyes).
I'll take Jackson to outbox Mugabi before scoringb a mid-round KO.

I'd say the days when Mugabi got overrated are long gone.Even longer gone than the days when Dick Tiger, Mike McCallum and others were "underrated".
I'll go with jackson as well.Shorter punches and better technique though if he gets dragged into trading the way hagler did i think he'll go very quickly if caught right. Not a fight to bet on.

have 2 join d unanimous pick of Jackson . Mugabi was drained @ 154 , 2 Jackson's prime being at it , but even at 160 i'd still pick jackson , although mugabi's puncher's chance gets bigger there .

The Problem for Julian is if he needs a round or two to execute..a cute execution
- And Mugabi just goes straight into Def-con mode, he did this with that other emeging 154 lb puncher Earl the Pearl Hargrove, and John indeed looked a Beast - a Jolly Horrid one at that, - So if Julian is looking to set up for the Perfect picturesque KO John my kick his Tripod over pretty quickly, they both had the power, but like electricity, Johns was more Industrial dirty power, Smash and Blast, whereas Julian's was clean cut Domestic "Tuck-you-up" Lights out, Both of course more than get the Job Done, At 154, and pre-Hagler did John show any vunerability ? the rot certainly set in After Hagler, - but this match is before John's slide from the strict George Francis school of Discipline, For me Julian is the "Shaky starter" looking one, at this particular juncture, I think John may be too Brutal too quickly for Julian and not allow him a way back, - I think i will be that voice in the wilderness and go for the beast to devour the Hawk...

Jackson takes this he was actually a good textbook style boxer, this gets overlooked alot because it gets foreshadowed by his insane power and china chin.

Mugabi was rather easy to hit and though powerful in his own right, he's being matched with maybe the most murderous P4P puncher in history. The Hawk sparks the Beast in the first round.

Julian was more proven than John. John was knocked out by Duane Thomas with a thumb. I pick Julian by 3 or 4th round knockout in a very interesting fight. Round one would sure be tense.

It's hard to tell how good Mugabi was because I truly believe that Hagler fight took everything out of him.
I'd give him a serious chance against any light-middle of the 1980s, and most middles too.
McCallum's the one guy I'd outright expect to beat him at 154.
It doesnt matter who has more power. Which guy can box better and get that power to the target? I agree that is probabaly Jackson.

McCallum's the one guy I'd outright expect to beat him at 154.I am not sure Hagler too everything out of him. Marvin that night was rusty and didn't fight well and after Hearns I don't think he was motivated as much. His left was looping the whole night until late in the fight against Mugabi which proved how rusty he was. Mugabi gave him a good fight. I am sure the fight took something out of him,, but it was not everything.

i Think Julian jackson is more powerful than John Mugabi then jackson is the winner in every fight. They had different type of power. Julian had those quick sharp power punches. Mugabi swung and landed huge power punches like against Hargrove. No one could have taken that punch which knocked down Hargrove. Against Hagler either Mickey Duff planned for John to punch more conservatively or they saw during the fight that John couldn't throw those type of punches against Hagler, Mugabi threw shorter punches than in his other fights.
