for his fight with Oscar back in '01? does anyone know how much he made or what the PPV numbers were?

The PPV revenue was $0.

It was plain HBO, the last one Oscar has had.

"I could have kept going, but I respect my corner's judgement," said Gatti, who earned $1.8 million. "I never felt like I hit him flush. I fought my heart out. It's all you can do."

Gatti went to a local hospital for observation and to have the cuts around his right eye stitched up.

For De La Hoya (No. 2 USA TODAY, 33-2, 27 KOs), it was a triumphant return after losing his welterweight title last June to Shane Mosley, who sat ringside.

It was also De La Hoya's first fight with promoter Jerry Perenchio and trainer Floyd Mayweather Sr.

"I'm not even close to becoming as good a fighter as I can," said De La Hoya, who earned $4.5 million. "This was just the start. I knew Gatti would be tough. He's a tough Italian kid. There is still a lot that needs to be worked on. But I'll even be better. This was just my first fight with Mayweather. This is just the beginning."

They both made next to nothing compared to what you'd expect. Two of the most marketable fighters.

Gatti finished his career on a horrible note, but you have to figure he made 10's of millions in his career, hopefully invested it wisely and can now retire and relax.

yea that is kinda weird. if this would have been PPV i would have expected Gatti to make like 8 mill and DLH around 20-25 mill

Gatti made 3.25 mil against Mayweather and 1.75 million against Dorin (almost as much as against DeLaHoya). Anyone know what he got for the Ward trilogy?

Gatti made 2 mill and Ward 1 mill for their second fight.

Gatti made good money while he was fighting, but I think that "tens of millions" estimate is kind of high.

DLH is a huge star and PPV guy, but Gatti never headlined a PPV before the Mayweather fight. Gatti sells lots of tickets in New Jersey and is a loved TV fighter, but his PPV clout was unknown, and it was a mismatch anyway.

DLH's only PPV mismatches up to that point were against bigger names, like an old Chavez in the rematch(a legend and massively popular), and to a lesser extent, an old Camacho. Most of his PPVs were competitive (or supposed to be competitive going in), while his "gimmes" were on plain HBO. That was supposed to be a confidence-builder after having only one win in his previous 3 fights, and coming off his first non-controversial loss.

Not really, just adding up the 4 or 5 fights I can find purse information for comes to nearly $10 million.

No it doesn't but that also doesn't count his other 45 or so fights. You have to figure he netted millions even after all the overhead. Even 3 or 4 million is easily enough to live comfortably off of.

it was supposed to be Gatti's last fight, and instead of looking at it like DLH gave him no money, many people saw it as giving the fighter a last opportunity to make seven figures before retiring

I don't think it would have sold very well if it were PPV. The fight actually lasted a lot longer than most people probably expected. Now considering it didn't even last five rounds, that's saying something.

Let's not forget that the fight predated Gatti's resurgence.

But those were easily his biggest paydays. Do you really think he made another 10 million or more in his other bouts?

I'm not saying for sure he didn't, but I don't recall him fighting for such big purses earlier in his career.
