Im interested to see who you guys think is the greatest British world champion of the last 50 years, we've had plenty of great fighters, Turpin, Benn, Eubank, Naz, Lewis, Buchanan, Mcguigan, Collins, Calzaghe, Hatton, Harrison, Conteh, Honeyghan etc .... It can be 1 single performance or a reign of years, because i personally think that Mcguigan beating Pedroza or Lloyd Honeyghan taking out the pond for pound king will live longer in the memory than Calzaghe's or Hatton's reign ...... I have a personal preference for Ken Buchanan, i think Ken was a brilliant fighter and im saying Ken Buchanan is the Greatest British Champion and Fighter of the last 50 years, and ive been accused of being Anti-Scottish in the past just because i think Alex Arthur and Scott Harrison were nothing of any significance. Ken was our best Fighter/Champion of the last 50 yrs

Ken Buchanan easily.

The way in which he won his title hasnt been equalled by anyone in the last 50 years.

Nah - Pavlik is a middle weight - a competitive fight that should have been made - it would be a very good win. Beating Jones now means 0!

Fighting and beating prime Hopkins, or JOnes.. now we are talking...

Nah - Pavlik is a middle weight waiting for a competitive fight - it would be a good win. Beating Jones now means 0!

he'd still be retiring undefeated after shutting up his critics.

Pavilk is a middle weight - Joe will always beat him imo style-wise as well - I don't see it as a ATG defining win. It's just a completive fight and one that Joe perhaps needs to make. I like Pavlik but he is not that great in my opinion.

Calzaghe is 36...most fighters are shot and retired by now, yet he is still expected to fight each and every young gun that appears from 160-175.

Fighters age differently if you don't understand that - I GIVE UP!

Randy Turpin.

he beat the greatest fighter of all time in his prime.

If it's one performance it has to be Turpin's win over Sugar Ray Robinson.

The greatest single performance would have to be Turpin vs Robinson.

The greatest champion would be Lennox Lewis, however.

Calzaghe would be expected to age as appreciably as anybody given his style. It is a measure of how good he is that people set such high standards for him still.

Big Lennox for fighters

Performance - I agree with Turpin over Robinson, but also think that, due to the bouts being away performances, Stracey over Napoles and Honeyghan over Curry are up there as well.

Post war period easily Lewis although p4p Buchannan was the superior talent. Lewis beat a whole raft of decent fighters in his career (many of whom would've flattened this sad sack of fighters we call todays heavyweights) but he never fought anyone like Duran. Poor old Kenny!

You can't erase a decade of wbo bottom feeding by beating a shot fighter. I don't think he'll be shutting anybody up

Lennox Lewis

Suffered a premature stoppage, a robbery (Holy I) and a lucky punch - avenged all three in rematches and never really looked like losing either before, or during his reign as champion

Conteh, Walter McGowan and Winstone were just as technically adept as Buchanan.Conteh was actually a much more complete fighter, just not as dedicated as Ken.

Lewis the most successful world champion, though perhaps not the best British fighter ever.

Not seen enough of Winstone and McGowan to form a valid oppinion.
Conteh-your right! Should have been so much more.

I agree that John Conteh was a rare talent, but I honestly think that Buchanan edges him. Unfortunately JC fell into the George Best trap and after his hand injury never fulfilled his real potential.

Ken Buchanan is a rarity, especially these days, in that he was a champion who knew where his passport was. Taking the world title from a south american in his own backyard in 120 degrees heat with no shade between rounds to me epitomises the mans fighting spirit. It was so hot that Laguna, the champ, against normal convention, entered the ring first and took the corner with shade leaving Ken to roast between rounds. Buchanans corner were poring water on his head, and then rubbing in tan cream to stop the blistering effects of the sun. Ken Buchanan and John Stracey are stand out fighters to me, men who went into the lions den and took titles...they put to shame men like Calzaghe et al who shy away at the thought of adversity and a true challenge.

For achievements and publicity this award goes to Lennox Lewis.

On other factors other fighters may deserve the award.
