`Scottish` Craig McEwan won again in LA last night. I`m a big fan of Craig`s but missed the fight on Sky. Did anyone see it? I was at the Wildcard gym in LA a few weeks ago and spoke to Pepper Roach, Freddy`s brother, who was raving about him.It seems Craig had been in sparring with Kingsley Ikeke and according to Pep he was sensational. If anyone recorded the bout can they stick it on youtube? Please!!!

I didnt record it but i watched it and he started well, dropped the boy, good combos, very accurate. he got a bit sloppy in the middle and was getting caught with silly punches, but steadied himself and controlled the last couple rounds easily. He switched a bit to much, but all in all i was impressed.

thanks Dunky, hope you can get your mate to do it. I`ve spoken to Craig since I posted and he would like to see it too.
I put some of the points and criticisms of his performance which were put on this site and others to him. Craig accepts that when he switches to conventional from southpaw he is more vulnerable but he also says that its a useful way to open his opponent up. On Saturday he was aware that Lopez couldn`t hurt him and was willing to take a few to extend the range of his attack. He says he is still experimenting and learning and will change his style to fit his opponent.
He does not accept that his style is amateurish and points out that fast middleweights are often more upright than their slower fellow boxers. However neither he nor Freddy see his basic style as a problem and Freddy himself sees it as an advantage and has encouraged him not to change and ,in fact, to develop it.
Craig acknowledges he is still learning and that , as a boxer, he always will be. He is more sure than ever that going to the Wildcard to turn Pro was the right decision and he feels he is making good progress.
By the way he does not think that Lopez is a natural welterweight or even light middleweight now.He weighed in heavier than Craig and it doesn`t seem from his photos that he was carrying fat. Craig has also been assessed by a nutritionist and has been told he can make 154 OR EVEN LOWER! I doubt the last bit but I`m no expert!
By the way he WAS trying to knock the guy out! Lopez was genuinely tough and Craig gives him credit for staying up. He is working on his power but also on planting his feet more effectively and is sure he will improve. He points out that the Pro game is totally different from the amateurs and that boxers who don`t see this and serve a proper Pro apprenticeship will never improve.
I hope thats of interest to you. As a fellow Scot and an admirer of brain over brawn , I am a big fan of Craig`s. I think his methodical, canny approach to his development is the right one.

Firstly, after the Khan PPV fiasco (I paid that's why I'm moaning!), it was a pleasure to see Craig involved in what turned out to be a good night's boxing. This lad has potential and I fail to understand why there's little interest in him at home.
Secondly, from what I've heard and read before, it's clear that Jim Watt and others don't like his switch style. But the negativity of the Sky pundits blew me away. What was the problem? He was in total control, this guy was no mug (pretty durable IMO), and he was getting a good crowd reaction. Which I take it would have been from fans who were genuine boxing fans who were there to see all bouts. Not the high rollers who wander in to get their coupons on the box during the main event.
Okay when he switched he was taking a few, but this was as good a display from a young British boxer as I've seen in ages. Is it the fact that he's taken a gamble and went stateside that rankles? If I had the ability, I'd have loved to have embarked on this journey... and in many ways Craig's has just begun! Go to the US, get trained by a top trainer, spar with top pro's and learn your craft the hard way while being carefully managed as you make your way up the pro ranks. one wonders what promoter would have been promising what alphabet belt at this stage back home? Good luck to the lad.
Oh and this has to be mentioned, Freddie Roach in a Hibs strip... priceless!! I'm no Hibs fan but that put a smile on my face.
Finally, well done to Sky - something decent at last!

Craig had a Great Amateaur record having loads of Fights
so his experience should do him well in the pros,
Seems as if hes got good life on the Go moving over to the states,
Tough sparring with great fighters
By the Way we had boy from Paisley who fought Craig 8 times as an amateaur as youth and beat him 6 times ( either that or it was 4 out of 6 )
Now that boys not doing anything and Craigs got great prospects
Just shows you
The fights were when Craig about Feathereight though
which he certainly isnt anymore :yep

I have high hopes for McEwan, he looks very promising indeed and seems to have a star quality about him.
Very impressed that he went Stateside to get the very best training in the game. Khan should take note.

Dont thank me, thank my mate who posts all the scottish boxing stuff on Youtube!
I would love to take the credit for it, but I just happen to be a close pal of his, he does all the hard work uploading everything whilst Im busy arguing with everyone in here!
If people like his vids, pop in & drop a comment, he appreciates good feedback from his viewers. After all, hes kinda the home of scottish boxing on Youtube!
& hes not as hotheaded as me either, so you are all safe;)
You keep up the good work too Reilly, I know we have had our wee disagreements here & there but Im a hard person to get along with. I admit that. however, you do great work for scottish boxing like my pal, cos you do great interviews with the scottish lads.
See, I might be a cunt, but Im an honest & good hearted cunt. Credit where credits due to you.

I watched the fight on u tube with Craig and he passes on his thanks to you and Robert Holland, Dunky. The fight was on the " International Programme" and was not shown in the States so it was the first opportunity for Craig to review his performance.
Like everyone else he is frustrated that he did not finish the guy off. He thought he got in too close at vital times when he should have had more patience. He agrees with most of Jim Watt`s comments and even accepted that his switching should be more contolled. I have to say that I disagree with Craig and most of the forum posters on this. Craig put Lopez down with a RIGHT and some of his best spells were when he went orthodox. I think that his biggest fault is his tendency to throw " weak flurries" at times, which would give a better opponent the chance to step in and bang hard.
I particularly like the lateral step to the right, he has developed opening up his opponent to single left hooks. When I mentioned it to him, he didn`t know what I was talking about so I had to rewind and show him. It turned out he wasn`t even aware he was doing it!
Dunky, throughout our watching the bout Craig was continually commenting on his performance and noting aspects which were good or needed work on, so please pass on Craig`s thanks to Mr. Holland as the clip will be extremely helpfull to his continued progress.

sky pundits did not rate him at all.
Thats a good thing, they know fuck all about boxing they said Khan lost because he "came out swinging" against a puncher watch that fight again he didn't "come out swinging" at all, not to mention their 100% biased commentary towards British fighters especially Hatton.
They act like fights who are not on their network don't even happen, Sky and their shity coverage can fuck off as far as i'm concerned.

Craig McEwan
looks very very average....
If he wants to make a big impact, he will have to do allot more than..
"Steady progress"
He does not look like he is a power puncher..
Does not look like he is fast..
Does not look like "He has creativity" and throws great combinations..
Just looks like a average everyday man..
And average everyday men, get fucked up by the Jermaine Taylor's and Kelly Pavliks of this world.
They just get fucked in general at some point..

Awright Dunky, your right mate, he would beat the english guys in the 1st:D :D Craig is an ever improving fighter, very good style. I remember him as an amateur, he could make guys looks like clowns, falling all over the place trying to catch him, great feet work. & to think Craigs a fuckin beast of a fighter with more natural talent than my hero Scotty & Alex Arthur put together, its gonna be fun cheering on the big fella on here:deal
In all seriousness though, I have big hopes that the Craig man will deliver where Scotty failed & fufill his potential & do Scotland proud by winning many world titles. hes got the talent, hes got the worlds best trainer in Freddie Roach & hes had the sparring & hes got the respect of Margarito & Hopkins to name but two.
Hes a superstar in the making, & its great to have him around to fill the void Scotty left when he went off the rails. Theres new kid in town, thats for sure.

I wasn't serious. I haven't even been bothered to watch that little video og one of his fights. I just wanted you angry Jocks to get even more riled up.
I hope he does suceed, honestly. I naturally prefer English fighters, but I have no problem wanting a Scottish guy to beat one of our lads. If Arthur moved up to fight Khan, I'd be cheering him on. Same with fighters from any other nation. In fact, there isn't an English boxer in my favourite 20.

This is what Doug Fischer said on maxboxing.com..
One of the regular faces at the Wild Card I always enjoy chatting with is Billy Keane, who manages the careers of WBO bantamweight titlist Gerry Penalosa and middleweight prospect Craig McEwan among other fighters.
Yesterday, Keane seemed to be in a quandary. Streaking junior middleweight Alfred Angulo is supposed to be on the undercard of the November 22nd Ricky Hatton-Paul Malignaggi pay-per-view card.
The opponent wanted for the 14-0 (11) Mexican banger is McEwan, who recently upped his record to 12-0 (7) with an eight-round decision over Hilario Lopez on the Mosley-Mayorga undercard.
I think McEwan, a 6-foot-1 southpaw who can stick and move when he wants to, presents a difficult style for Angulo. But that’s easy for me to say. I don’t have money invested in the affable former amateur star from Scotland.
“It’s a 10-round fight,” said Keane. “Craig’s never been past eight. Rounds nine and 10 are my only concern. For eight rounds I know Craig will out-box him.
“It’s the kind of fight that if Craig wins, it instantly puts him on the map, but do I want to put him in with Angulo after only 12 fights? On one hand I ask myself, ‘What’s the rush?’ But on the other hand, what are three more fights at the Desert Diamond Casino going to do for him?”
Good questions. Hard choices. I’m glad I’m a writer and not manager.

I'm normally one to complain of fighters being overprotected and not matched tough enough early. I was delighted when fellow Scottish prospect Paul Appleby was matched hard early in his British title fight with John Simpson.
But that was a 50/50 fight(where I favoured Appleby) that you felt if Paul lost he would still gain a hell of a lot of knowledge.
But while McEwan is a good prospect and may be able to outbox Angulo for periods I think he would get put away devastatingly. Angulo punches very hard, works body and head very well, has excellant handspeed and is aggressive early, not letting his opponents settle.
I feel McEwan's defence is still open enough where Angulo would tag him and I'm not sure McEwan would have the firepower to keep Angulo off him.
very poor matchmaking imo, Angulo stoppage within 4/5 rounds.

Does it shock you to know that I disagree with your analysis of how this fight would pan out Bigears?
Angulo would be a massive scalp, no. let me rephrase that. It would be an earth shattering scalp for McEwan, but its winnable IMO. Angulo is overrated IMO, & McEwan is underrated.
I predicted mcEwan would be a future star, but if this fight was to happen then if McEwan wins, hes a superstar before the end of the year!!!
Its a mindbogglingly big fight if it happens.

Young Craig's a good fighter but in the city he was always the guy talked about after Kenny Anderson.
The move to the states should help him though.
Kennys stagnating over on these shores through no fault of his own, I would be a happy happy man if Kenny "did a Craig" & followed him over to Roachland!
I know he had the chance already but missed home too much, but hopefully he will reconsider.
Scottish boxers dont get the opportunities on these shores to shine like they do overseas.
& thats the truth ruth.
A plus for Craig is he's been fighting at Middleweight and the Angulo fight will take place at Light Middle most likely. I think it was posted on here that Freddie Roach said that he wants Craig to move down. Angulo is a beast at light middle but Craig should be much much stronger and have a bigger punch at the lighter weight.

Its a mindbogglingly big fight if it happens.Youre right, McEwan is underrated, BUT, Angulo is in no way overrated. Who overrates him - he's rated as an elite prospect and rightly so. He is exactly what he is, a fierce ass brawler with sound boxing skills.
A guy McEwan im sure could take right now is Kirkland, but Angulo, I dont know. I have a feeling he is going to be huge.
But, if this fight does happen, and McCEwan shocks America, im all for it, let the bell ring.
i INTERVIewed craig earlier this year.he was my first interview.i feel he is actually a decent laddie;has his head screwed on .i hopefully will get something towards the end of year for my blog.
here is the interview :[Only registered and activated users can see links]
hope it gives everyone a bit of an insite to the laddie.
Wow, aggressive matchmaking. Interesting looking fight on paper. McEwan has a style that could cause some problems for Angulo, and has also been campaigning at middleweight. What weight is the fight at?
On the other hand I'm not sure if McEwan is ready for that sort of consistent pressure and power for 10 rounds, and whther he'll have the gas and know how to box off the back foot for that length of time.
A loss wouldn't be the end of the world for either if they give a creditable performance, so I don't think its a terrible match to make.

No I expected it tbh, Angulo is underated by some(I haven't looked at the main forum about him but I guess they think he's the destroyer of all men) and McEwan is indeed underated by many.
But McEwan is still very much a prospect, a prospect who has fought no where near contender status(which is what Angulo is).
To put it into perspective McEwan would be taking a step up if he fought any of Angulo's last 5 opponents(all of whom have been stopped).
Archak Termeliksetian would of been a very good dangerous fight for McEwan but Angulo is another level to that.
McEwan may be good enough to beat Angulo in the future but right now I can't see him dealing with the pressure, power and offence of a damn good fighter who hits very hard. McEwan did occasionally get hit by Lopez with stupid punches, if he allows that against Angulo he could very well get hurt and if Angulo hurts you he'll probably finish you because he has excellant shot selection.
As I said McEwan may outbox him in periods but this is too big a step too soon and he'll be blown away in dramatic fashion.
Boxrec, not the most reliable of sources, already have this fight listed.

Latest from Craig a few hours ago;his side have accepted already and are waiting for the other side to do the same. Hopefully the Boxrec news means they have!
In fact , Craig has sparred with Angulo previously so they know each others`styles. Craig is really up for it but knows how hard it will be , especially as he is dropping to Angulo`s comfort zone at 154 and will be doing 10 rounds for the first time.
On the subject of Kenny Anderson, I believe that Kenny also sparred with Angulo at the Wildcard. I`ll check with Craig but I`m sure one of the coaches at the gym told me about it.
Kenny`s opinion on the match up would be interesting. Anyone in contact with him?

Youre right, McEwan is underrated, BUT, Angulo is in no way overrated. Who overrates him
HBO overrates him IMO. & I can explain why, if you are interested!

Well Bigears, I see what you are saying & I respect it, but I been doing some swatting up on Angulo recently but Im not quite finished yet. Once I have hoovered up every last bit of knowledge I can gain on the man, Im going to tell you exactly how I think the fight will pan out.
Let me just say though that im not in fanboy mode, cos I know Angulo is a beast of a fighter who reminds me of my former hero Scotty Harrison in many ways & I can pay the man no bigger compliment than that.
But until Im totally up to date with all things Angulo, I cannot offer a big fight prediction. It wouldnt be right. I dont roll like so many of the bigmouths in here who just talk loud without doing their homework.

It doesnt suprise me that Angulos people arent too willing to throw him in with Craig, especially as Max kellerman said a while back that Angulos people were matching him carefully, & only wanted to put him in with guys who would go toe to toe with him, & wanted to keep him away from slick boxers.
I know a bit about Kirkland already, & thats a fighter I think would suit Craig down to the ground. Small, aggressive, Craig could use his height & his skills to pick him off & wear him down.
Karmazin though? Thats a toughie. I know he lost his last fight in a shock, but hes big awkward & so experienced, that would be tough, but Im sure Craig will knock 'em all down if & when it happens.
Once again thanks for the info Mr Grendal, & mind & keep us updated if you can:good

Ya now Kirkland is a different story, I don't rate him at all and I think it's possible McEwan would box his ears off.
While there's no doubt Angulo's people prefer guys that will stand there and fight with him, Angulo knows how to pressure, cut off the ring and be patient when he has to. He's a smart fighter and is capable of breaking down movers.
Karmazin was looking pretty faded against Bunema, however that may have just been an off night. But I think that would be a good fight for McEwan as it's the type that if McEwan losses he'd probably learn a lot from it. Where Angulo fight might just give him a battering without much benefit.

Just a quickie guys. Angulo`s people are not playing ball and have all but pulled out. The latest name is Brian Vera. Golden Boy seem determined to get Craig on the Hatton undercard with somebody good. Craig is desparate to fight and will take anybody.

update....Angulo v Mcewan is definitely off. Angulo's team wanted megabucks and GBP were not going to pay. If Vera v Kirkland wasn`t a goer then Vera v Mcewan was on but it seems Vera v kirkland IS on. Craig has been offered a bout v Ivan Stovall at the Morongo. He`s very frustrated but is going to take it. Patience is a virtue!

THATS MY UNDERSTANDING , DUNKY. Craig is still not sure if its been finalised yet but he`s training for a bout that weekend. Not sure of the weight of course as up till now he`s been working towards about 156 but Stovall is heavier. Not the best preparation but Craig has an "I`ll fight anyone "attitude.
Latest news is that Jamie Moore (the Irish one) is preparing for his next bout at the Wildcard so that will be more good sparring for Craig. Craig still remembers "loosing" by a point to Jamie in the Four Nations as amateurs after the judges deducted a 2 point penalty TWICE from Craig in the last round in the final. Never seen the boy so mad!!!
He has been running with Manny and Amir in the Hollywood Hills every morning and was a bit hurt when a camera crew asked him to step out the shot so that they could film just the two mega stars!
Never mind. Someday......

I thought he was, regarding the fight that just fell apart. He is always on the promotions/undercard. This was what seemed a big step up fight here, certainly thought it would of been on this card.
Is it a "TBA" now ?

Spoke to Craig today and he is really disappointed. A couple of hours before the weigh-in he checked his weight in the weigh-in room and he was 158.8.
He wanted to weigh-in at less than his last fight so he went down to the sauna where whom should he find but Ivan Stovall already there. as soon as he saw Ivan he realised that there was no way he was 158 plus or minus 1 which was the arrangement.Craig`s manager asked Ivan to go up to weigh himself and he tipped 165!
Craig wanted to take the fight anyway and when Freddy Roach was contacted he agreed with Stovall`s team that they would take it if Stovall could get down to 163.
Ivan went off to try but couldn`t get below 165. Craig still wanted it but Freddy and Billy Keane, his manager, said no.
Craig has been assured that they will try to get another fight in the next fortnight but he is not optimistic. He was back in the gym yesterday and is going to keep training till he is told there will be no bout, but I can tell he is really demoralised.
I know , however , that the lads at the Wildcard will keep his spirits up and Craig is not the type who will be down for long.
Look out for a explosive come back!

Tehriley, Craig is from Wester Hailes but now lives in Hollywood and boxes out of the Wildcard Gym there, trained by Freddy Roach.
He is promoted by Goldenboy and I think he was the first British boxer on their books.
The story of how he ended up there is fairy tale stuff.
When Craig was an amateur he got a grant through SportScotland and was asked what single thing would best further his amateur carreer. Craig had long been admirer of Freddy and he told SportScotland that a visit to the Wildcard would be his choice. To his amazement they said " go for it" so a few weeks later he, and his then girlfriend Sally ( now Mrs. McEwan) pitched up in Hollywood.
Craig went along to the Wildcard, resolved to work hard and just learn from what was going on around him. After a few days he got a chance to spar. I forget who it was with but it was someone pretty good. Sally told me afterwards that after a few minutes all the boxers in the gym slowly stopped what they were doing to watch what was going on in the ring. Craig was sparring well, Sally says, though he was, no doubt, a bit loose and "novicey" though Sally could see that everyone was really impressed.
After it was finished Freddy came over and spoke to him and couldn`t believe he was an amateur from Scotland. After less than 60 seconds speaking to Freddy, the great man told him " if you ever want to turn pro, please speak to me before you talk to anyone else".
Three years later, Craig is 12-0-0 and is one of the Wildcard fixtures, on nodding terms with the likes of Pacquiao,Dela Hoya, Hopkins and Mayweather
I was in LA for his last fight , at the Home Depot Centre, and after the show we were in one of these big freight elevators going up to the exit.
Just as the doors closed, who should nip in but Antonio Margarito. There were about 50 people in the lift, all big boxing fans and you could see them all thinking " Shit! Look who I`m sharing an elevator with!!"
Next thing Margarito looks up and says, "Hey Craig, Buenos tardis. Great fight tonight man!"(Craig had sparred with Margarito in 2007)
Craig of course plays Mr Cool! "hey Toni" as if this sort of thing was an every day occurance. Which, actually, it just about is now!
By the way, I see you`re a Paul Appleby fan. I knew Paul and his brother David when they were amateurs. Both great boxers and great lads.I hope Paul goes all the way. A spell at the Wildcard would benefit him too, though.

Thanks Grendal for all the info, i know alot of guys here have a lot of respect for Craig and most thought he would edge Angulo if they fought. I will keep my eye out for him. Oh and yes big fan of appleby, seen him on sky sports a fair few times and loved his style, approach (british champ in 12 fights is impressive in my eyes in a competitive division domestically) he does have his flaws and would agree a move to a world class gym for a while would bring him on even more.
