Willie Limond to get chance to fight at Madison Square Garden
Sep 29 2008 ([Only registered and activated users can see links])
WILLIE LIMOND'S Madison Square Garden dream is alive again.
It now seems certain that the Glaswegian will face Dmitriy Salita at boxing's Mecca on the Joe Calzaghe-Roy Jones Jnr undercard on November 8.
Limond, 29, agreed to box the popular New York Jew on the big bill but their fight was scrapped when Salita got the nod to challenge WBA light-welterweight champion Andreas Kotelnik instead.
However, Kotelnik is injured and the ex-Commonwealth lightweight champion has been approached again by Calzaghe and Jones who are promoting the show.
Limond is understood to be close to taking the Big Apple non-title 10-rounder despite whispers of a rematch with Amir Khan, who beat the Scot last year.
nice one willie boy, we're right behind you again :bbb :good

Willie - if you're out there?
What's the latest on tickets for the Lagoon (Paisley) on 18th October? Are you deffo' on that night and is this simply a warm up for MSG?
Tried to source tickets from one of the Paisley fighters who's on the card and he said that the promoter was dealing with everything and he'd get me his number. Isn't it normal for fighters to punt their own tickets? Are Braveheart not leaving it a bit late? (Don't answer that last bit.)
Cheers m8t.

Willie, many of us here are worried about the prospect of you taking a tune-up fight with only a month or so to go to the big fight at MSG! What if you get a cut or get a stupid injury? You know best, but be careful, mate! It would be a disaster if you couldn't make the MSG fight!
Best of luck, Willie! We're all behind you here, on ESB!:good
According to BBN Limond has declined opportunity from SN to fight Breidis Prescott at short notice (October 10th).
I'd love to see that fight in the future though.

Cheers Willie, I appreciate you responding.
I'll see Stevie Weir tonight and I'll see if he's got any (trains locally and my kids go the same club as him). Not sure if it's like the old days when fighters got a few bob for punting their own tickets? Either way, bottom line is that I want to go to the Lagoon event so may be in touch to take you up on your offer. (We're probably talking about x 3 tickets - possibly more if I can get other mates to go as well.)
Good news about the MSG fight btw. If I can get that lottery win I'll be there :thumbsup MSG is on my "things to do before I die" list!
Hope your training is going well and good to see that things are on the up.

You're right, it didn't last long, but for some reason, I don't think he got lucky...would you fight him if you were given the chance?
Do you know Choi Tseveenpurev, Willie? I am a big fan! Do you like his style? Do you think he can win a world title one day?

What's he like as a person? He seems humble, quiet and honest.
Would you agree that he's gotten better too, in the last couple of years?
How hard does he punch, Willie?
He's rated quite highly, I cannot see why he's not getting a route to a title - he's no spring chicken and with ****** in charge, you'd reckon they'd get a move on!

you're right willie we know he can punch, but what about his overall many fighters have caused upsets and done nothing after. Do you think khan can make the necesarry adjustments? although his chin is weak :-( . he still looks very immature in the ring and maybe a late developer

am not sure mate, i think when someone struggles to make weight it doesnt help their punch resistance, or maybe he just cant take a solid shot, but to be fair those shots might have put a lot of people away, khan needs to change everything, his attitude that he can walk through everyone, maybe fight on the backfoot and try ride some of the shots, coz he is fast, but am not sure, but i do think roach will help a little, until he gets caught again!! ive just gave a politicians answer there havent i!! haha

To be fair to Khan, those shots looked like they would spark most fighters. Nearly every single one landed right on target and that's quite rare. Usually there's one flush shot and three of four punches that half-land.
I think Khan is screwed at that level. I don't think he even rushed that much. He seemed to be boxing quite sensibly- it's just the other guy had zero respect for him and had the reach get away with it.
Prescott is also very tall and big for the weight and this leads to a question for Willy Limond, do you agree that at the top level there tends to be fighters who are genetic freaks in that they can look very big at the weight and that is what ends up stopping alot of people - who are normal sized like yourself - making that step-up?
Margarito and Williams are like that for welterweights, and even Khan was quite a bit bigger than you and that's probably the only real edge he had. I wonder is Salita big for the weight?

i didnt think khan was bigger than me when we fought a bit taller but very thin legs, most of my weight is in my legs, but khan looks a lot bigger now tho, he looks like hes bulked up a bit, as for world class fighters i just think there a different breed, they have got it all, not sure if people will agree with me here, but as well as having some natural talent, i think its a lot to do with there up bringing

Perhaps Khan might be able to take a shot better if he put some muscle on his legs.
Could maybe do 3 x 15 at 150Kg on the leg press a couple of times a day, works a treat for rugby players.
It would probably mean a move to 140, but at domestic level both divisions seem to be of a similar standard.

Yeah, on TV you only really notice the upper body so fair point, and he has gotten bigger since then.
Anyway Willie, good luck for Salita, although the way things are going you probably won't believe your fighting him until you step in the MSG ring :)

Dont know if its upbringing or soemthing inside them they are born with but there is no doubt something different about the elite in any field. Like you say natural talent isnt everything ( in fact one could argue that too much natural talent is actually a hinderance as it can lead to complacency.)
