Because of the recent changes that show Loughran to be the winner over gene tunney(which in fact should have been the case all along) this makes it nearly impossible to rank gene tunney over loughran at lightheavyweight. A teenager version of loughran beat gene tunney and cleaned out the lightheavyweight division....loughran beat better competition at lightheavyweight than tunney did including beating the best 175lb punchers of the 1920s(which tunney did not) and he beat top black fighters. At heavyweight, Tommy Loughran beat 3 linear heavyweight champions to Gene Tunney's 1.
Loughran with wins at 175lb over gene tunney, harry greb, jack delaney, mickey walker, jim braddock, jimmy slattery, young stribling.......I mean thats an unbelievable resume.

The contents of boxrec.com don't constitute a holy scripture. I'm not aware of any school of thought that says one's assessment of historical fights should rest solely upon the pronouncements of the site's administrators. The fact that they now list Loughran as having won the Tunney fight (which they've actually listed in the past as well, as I recall, but have flip-flopped on) does not effectively change history. If they were to change the result back to a win for Tunney, would you consider it grounds for dropping Loughran back down? All we can say with strong objectivity is that the fight seems to have been very close, had no official decision, and newspaper accounts are divided by opinion as to who got the better of it; even boxrec lists one account for Tunney and one for Loughran, but says that the Philadelphia Inquirer "seems to supercede" the New York Times, for reasons they do not explain.

Hard to disagree with your logic here.
It seems that more recent pubications are trying to replace the draws in past fighter's draw laden records with extra entries in the wins & losses columns.
An example of this is Tunney's record. I have an old boxing encyclopaedia that lists Tunney's record quite differently to Box Rec.

Well, wasn´t it known before the change on boxrec that the oppinions who won this fight divided? So, I don´t think the change on boxrec should influence the ratings much.

Box rec has a problem with my news paper is better that yours with some editors who keep changing results. I think Tunney got the better in a close fight since he hurt Loughran and scored the knockdown.

He's allways been in my top 4 out of the men that held the 175 lbs title, but I dont change anything on the basis of one newspaperman 's opinion, which may have been bought and paid for.If you discovered that one ore two new sources from the past gave the verdict to OBrien over Johnson in their 6 round NWS would you upgrade OBrien significantly? Loughran had 30 fights under his belt so he was hardly a novice when he met Tunney.

It's not exactly news to rank Loughran as an all time great at light heavyweight ... I would not pick him over Tunney over one very close fight that appears could have gone either way.

As others have already pointed out, there aren't any "recent changes" regarding a fight that took place some 90 years ago.
The fight has always been disputed as to who won, and it's not news to have some quarters proclaiming Loughran the winner.
I would probably rate Loughran ahead of Tunney at 175 anyway, on overall resume and achievements. I'm more impressed by the fight reports and achievements of Tunney at HEAVYweight rather than what he was like at light-heavy.

This guy just seems to have something against Tunney and Cerdan. No logic to it...

The change on boxrec dosnt really change the situation.
The fight could still be called either way depending on your sources.
All we can really say is that it was almost certainly a close fight that could be interpreted for either fighter.

I like your posts. You know a lot about boxing, especially certain eras. I respect your opinions on many, many subjects, and you always seem like a nice guy.
But come one...you do seem to jump all over these two. We've all got our favourites but you do seem to hold this vendetta close to your heart.
Anyway, have fun in California. But please keep posting.

It's because Tunney never fought a black fighter. That's my theory anyway.
