View Full Version : Limond turns down Prescott fight
Willie Limond has revealed how he turned down the opportunity to fight the man who knocked out Amir Khan in a round.
The 29-year-old added that promoters Sports Network offered him the opportunity to take on Breidis Prescott – the Colombian who took less than a minute to dispatch of Britain's 2004 Olympic Silver medallist in Manchester last month. The contest was pencilled in for October 10 in Liverpool.
However the boxer from the city's East End, admitted the short notice given by promoters was the main factor in him not taking on the hard punching South American. He said: “I was offered the fight but it was at three weeks notice. I told them [Sports Network] that I have no issue fighting Prescott but I need more time to prepare. Had they given me six or seven weeks then there would have not been any issue.
“As soon as he beat Khan I knew my name would be thrown in the mix. I talked to my management and we decided that three weeks wasn't enough time. Everybody saw what Prescott did to Khan. You cannot go into a fight with him having not had adequate time for training. If the promoters comeback with something more realistic then they can count me in.”
Limond, who currently holds the IBO Intercontinental title, will next fight against a yet unnamed opponent at the Lagoon Leisure Centre, Paisley on October 18. It will be Braveheart Promotions' first show of the season. It will also feature locals Kevin McIntyre and Kris Carslaw amongst others.
Limond, the former Commonwealth lightweight title-holder also revealed his on off contest against Dmitriy Salita at Madison Square Garden is back on. He was due to fight the US based Ukrainian on the undercard of Joe Calzaghe and Roy Jones on September 20. However an injury to Calzaghe led to the show being postponed. The light-heavyweight showdown has now been set for November 8 and Limond hopes to achieve a lifetime ambition and fight at such a historic venue.
He added: “You never think it is going to happen to you but fighting in New York at the Garden is something to tell the grandchildren. The promoters have been back in touch and it looks like it is going to happen. We are waiting for final confirmation but it looks good.
“I have options now. My name is being mentioned not just in UK boxing circles. Its an exciting time to be Willie Limond.”

Good choice too. With adequete preperation Limond would give it a far better go than Khan.

Just read that there thats a load of shite i would Never say that, (its an exciting time to be me) most of its true but the last part is a load of pish, some of these reporters piss me off saying stuff like that!

how many fights is presscott with ****** for? he must be inside the top 10 of at least 3 belts now, surley ****** should be setting up fights with ranked guys. he has nothing to loose with this guy, can throw him in with anyone.

I think Limond has made the right choice in turning down Prescott at the current time if he has the Salita match possibly lined up. Maybe next year Limond vs Prescott could be a great fight between two guys who have both beaten Khan.

I doubt it would happen next year because I doubt Sports Network would offer the fight to Limond with a reasonable amount of time to train for it.
Well, they might offer the fight with a proper amount of time but only if there were options on Limond.
That's how promotional companies like that work, it's why this is such a messy business.

Yep. Although it also may depend on how Prescott does in his next fight and how Limond fairs with Salita if that fight happens. Both guys could be in a good position next year and the fight could be really big over here.

Being Jewish has been a crime on many occaisions. I think that is still illegal for Jews to enter York but no one really enforces that law, you can also shoot a Scotsman if he is wearing a kilt in that great city too but only if you shoot him with a bow and arrow.

Ta for that, brought a smile to my face... Can't say that I blame the good people of York for wanting to shoot us on sight - it wasn't that long ago that we Scots used to ransack the town every other weekend! A kinda Roman holiday but wi kilts and woad.
On a more serious note, I'd love to see WL going toe-to-toe with Prescott. Putting local bias to one side, it's also good to see a hard working pro getting some just rewards in a game that can often offer bugger all to those who give their all. A wee bit of moralising there to end on.

I reckon Willie Limmond could beat Prescott and I'd fucking love it if he did. Limmond ended up getting caught by Khan due to Khans speed and even though he nearly stopped Khan he does not have the power of someone like Prescott to totally fuck Khan with one shot.
But I just don't see Limmond getting caught repeatedly by Prescott as he was by Khan, because Prescott is simply not as fast and his punches are wider.
Limmond has a good chin, good, tight boxing and I reckon he could definitely win on points and quite clearly too.
He was right not to take the fight at such short notice, but that's Sports Network, hope he takes it without prep gets done like Khan and they can then make Prescott out to be a monster who is destroying all and sundry, and hype a rematch between Khan and him for about 5 fights time...
So fucking lame.
It would been class if Limmond had taken it and schooled Prescott.:lol:
Anyway good look to Willie in his next fight, he seems like a top lad.

Willie disnae need a rematch with Khan or Prescott,hes got his own career which he has earnet and dosent need these too fight these two .

I haven't seen enough of either to determine who I think would win. The A > B, B > C so A > C argument simply doesn't work.
Certainly not in this instance, where Limond was ripped off, whilst Prescott starched Khan but would have been ripped off had the fight transpired any differently......
I would guess that Limond has a lot more ring-savvy than Khan, won't just walk onto massive bombs from the first bell.

Its no choice really is it? A possible fight at MSG on the udnercard of one of the biggest fights of the year or fight Prescott at very short notice with not enough time to prepare (when you know SN just want to use you as a name to build up Prescott).
If Prescott & Limond win it would be an interesting fight in the future.

approximately 2 months ago the Barranquillan born bredis presscot was a nobody who wasnt even ranked in the top 50 he lost a controvertial decision against another nobody and managed to KO an olympic silver medalist with chin abnormalities so how the hell does this 25 year old columbo become so feared and a threat to the competitive 135 devision? he will loose badly to the 1st decent fighter he faces my 50 pence the same way he lost to the cuban who he controvertially defeated
