Honestly I don't think anyone isn't a Tommy Hearns fan. His style and mentality just draws people to him.

I don't like Hearns. Well, I don't not like him, I just don't like him either. Just a bit... Meh. A fantastic fighter who is subject to a fair bit of overrating by some.

Maybe I was a bit broad, I should have said...Noone hates Tommy Hearns. He can be overrated if one simply looks at him in a head to head sense, but if you factor in his career (that brings him down a peg or two) then he sits usually in a good spot.

I think Frazier is great and that he is top 3 alltime for excitement in heavies and for me the exciting factors means almost more than any.

No one seems to go over board on Jose Napoles on either negative or positive aspects. Seems like this board has a good grip on his best wins and they hold the Monzon loss in perspective too.

Holyfield fans are mostly level-headed. Tunney ones aren't too dilusional, though there's hardly any on here.

Hearns neither overachieved or underachieved. While still a teenage contender, he was projected as a potential four division champion (an awesome expectation to place on somebody so young), and easily could have fallen short of the mark. He actually did measure up to those early predictions as early as 1987, officially making the books as the first four division champion that year, and five division crown winner in 1988. Remarkably, he was only dethroned twice as a defending champion, both times by Iran Barkley. (SRL-Hearns I was a title unification, not strictly a title defense, per se.)

Frazier his highly underrated by many here ... he is constantly referred to as a one handed fighter with a weak chin ... absurd but referred to that way time and again here ..

I actualy think that Marciano fans are prety level headed and fair given the offensive nature and proactivity of many Marciano detractors.

This thread was created almost four years ago,but LMAO @ Joe Frazier having a neutral fanbase. The couple of dozen fans that he has are amongst the most delusional and bitter of all fanbases.Very similar to Hagler's fanbase.Actually, very similar to the two men mentioned themselves.

Leonard as he don't have what you call real boxing fans as he's a product created for joe casual & these sort of creatures are in the main Michael Jackson slurpers & the older joe casual will sing along to Bruce Springstein & yap about one day going to the Monaco formula 1 grand prix & associated shite.
Main event rubber neckers & i can only ever recall no more that a handful of the faithfull who have actually been hooked on Leonard, but we all are allowed mistakes in our youth & that was all down to the olympics. But if any cunt today said yeh i'am a Leonard fan then that just informing the public that they no fuck all about the sport & are just in all reality just another rat in the pack.
Many a time i've been in convo at bar yapping about boxing & there's always an "Outrider" lurking & hoping to join in to get some peer cred & often they'd squeak up & say "I like Sugar Ray Leoanrd" oh yeh i'd say!! Who else? then they'd roll their eyes in confusion & say ALI yeh ALI, who else i'd say? then all you'd get is a shifting of the feet/profuce sweating & a sick squirming forced smile as their brains went into meldown as they desperatly tried to actually name another fuckin boxer or champion for that matter. Wankers one & all:yep

Absolutly:yep How could it be!!! Ali & Frazier split the planet down racial & class lines for those who fed on any form of discrimination as they did back then. It was support anyone but Ali & even the KKK were offering Joe tempory whiteman status just as long as he whipped Ali.
Poor Joe had legions of fans he never wanted or asked for, he became a victim of circumstances as the whole event overtook him as ali corraled all the haters racists & neo-cons into Joe's corner which only added petrol to the flames which ali had ignited by calling poor joe an uncle tom. Joe was championed as a just an true american & ali as a draft dodging traitor. You could'nt have got a more polarised fight & set of fight fans. It became totally political from top 2 bottom & has stayed that way ever since for those who were around at that time.......In america that is:yep.

I don't really see this, atleast not on here. I think as a fan of boxing you cant admire one and not the other, because they both have the same character-qualities that make them loved fighters.

Which fighters have the most neutral fans?
Fighters who were very good in their era, fought cleanly, ducked no one, gave good efforts, did not talk derogatory about their opponents after the fight, had no problems outside the ring, and stayed away from gambling / fix allegations. If the fighter died before his time, I think fans don't grind on him as much.
I have not heard anyone trash Sal Sanchez.

Good way to put people off boxing forever. Why be a snob?
don't worry, duranimal. i've got it covered:
It's just a generational & general identification thing from back then, society was a bit different then in the 70's & most opinions were polarised be it politics or sport or in most cases politics & sport where one & the same. Who are you with & where do you stand ect, conformist/Non-Conformist, in or out, with them or against them, company man or rebel, "don't get above your station" sort of shite!
I first saw Duran when i was 17yrs of age on a sat afternoon on ITV World of Sport & it had the highlights of Duran/DeJesus II & i was mesmorised. I shortly found out later at work on the monday that he was responsible for beating Buchanan & hated as a dirty bastard by all of the older guys who were all to a man company men & what with me being the slave apprentice who was expected to fetch & carry their plumbers tools & fetch the coffee with the obligatory slap around the head, that set in motion the old saying that my enemies enemy is my friend sort of thing & anything & everything about Duran's persona appealed too me.
He was the ultimate anti-authoritarian rebel who scared the shit out of the conservative conformist "know your place class" My mum & uncles are all scottish & it all fell into place when i remembered them going beserk after the Buchanan fight & my mum swearing calling Duran that "wee dirty greezy swine" i did'nt know it was Duran back then & it all fell into place & i just thought "thats fuckin COOL!! Thats the role model for me!!
There was'nt much coverage back then in the press about overseas fights & we had a very strong domestic scene & that got all the press ink & when the Montreal Olympics came along in 76 it goes without saying that Sugar Ray Leonard was the main man & the global face of boxing who we all knew about & eveyone thought WOW ect ect that was until i picked up the local evening paper on the 21st of June & on the back page it had a photo of Duran leaping into the air with the headlines "The Panama Animal" mauls & batters Sugar Ray Leonard & that only cemented my belief that this is the greatest fighter alive & a triumph of individuality over the system & vindicated my decision in making Duran my role model & hero while the main stream casual were all cooing over SRL especially after he'd dispached Dave Boy Green.
In my youth & formative young years all my mates were Duran fans, to say you were a Leeds Utd supporter (HATED by all) regarding football & a Duran fan regarding boxing gave out the message to anyone & everyone what you were really all about or asperied to be & after New Orleans when all the hahahhehehehe brigade suddenly appeared from everywhere it only entrenched my opinions & views, yer don't quit on yer team just because they've had one bad game & change sides, not me anyway & it was more than an eye opener with regard to the attitude of most people regarding that 2nd fight & Leonard was the casual mediocre man in the streets dream, a company man indeed!!
Duran is the ultimate role model for any young man who is a bit down on his luck & in the fact that he came back the way he did after New Orleans & losing to Laing & within a year was a cunt hair away from beating the Mighty Hagler should give hope for all that anything is possible if you have the will & when you consider what he had to endure from his own people & the media after New Orleans & then rise up from the ashes of his own self inflicted humiliation then how can your troubles be any worse than his in the main. Get back up & press on & thats why Duran for me is everything about being the correct role model in overcoming adversity, faults & all & we've all got plenty.
There's no way i expect any younster's on here will cut to what i've just said as times they have a changed & for the better IMO, but i expect all Englishman on ESB around my age group will more than comprehend exactly what i'am getting at & where i was heading & it'll no doubt jog a few memories about what we got up too until we too had to conform somewhat with getting shotgun married/kids/trying to keep a job down to pay the bills & resisting the urge to smash the fuckin shite out of a cunt foreman on-site who was giving you unjust grief ect. But i did flatten the foreman who gave me unjust grief & went onto become a succesful entrepenour & that in plain english means un-employable:lol: & have been for 26 years:-D
