What is the purpose of focus pads, and what are the best things to do with them as a beginner?

prob the best thing to do as a beginner, is to find a decent trainer to hold them for you to make sure your technique is correct when you ar throwing basic punches, the worst thing you can do is to have a novice hold them for you as you will most likely be re-inforcing bad technique. when your basic puncing is up to scratch they can be used for many different drills, prob best to progres to learning to move in all directions with your punches, then you can learn defence, counters, work the pads for fitness, reactions, speed, power, whatver you need but try and get a good padman and you will learn fast:thumbsup

yeah i suppose the person who holds the pads is equally as important as the guy hitting them.

Yeah very important I was working with a kid on his 1st last night we held for each other and it was pathetic although I do understand it. One of the drills was to sleep a jab to the right dig in a uppercut to the ribs and come back up top with a left hook well he didnt know how to put any resistance on the uppercut so I would just tap the pad and the thing is flying up hitting him in the mouth and the uppercut he kept forgetting to actually turn it so I could hook it so I kept hooking the side of the focus pad.

I use focus pads alot more when I am introducing something new, or correcting something old, as in a bad habit. A while back I had to completely rebuild my left hook which was overextending, so I did a lot more padwork to get it engrained. That is, my new and improved way of using it and how it would now flow into different combinations.

Other then that, it is basically just for a workout, or before a fight, to get warmed up and loose.
