Thats true, but people who have boxed have more of a personal perspective of things, while people who havent really dont know what its like for example taking a good body shot, some people say that the De La Hoya Hopkins fight was a perfect Body shot, others myself included say the fight was a fix, now how would one know this truthfully had they never boxed?
I can break down why that fight was a fix easily, but the person I am telling this to had they never boxed would really beleive it anyways because they have not experienced that kind of shot

I agree with this opinion to a degree. I find that people here that havent boxed (at least competitive, real sparring with several different styles) have this idea that you can rank one fighter above another based on a skill set, how flashy they look, etc.
One example, someone in another thread said that SRR shouldnt have lost to an opponent such as Lamotta. This poster based that opinion on Lamotta not having a high degree of skill level. First, he was not an unskilled brawler. And second (and this is where ring experience pays dividends), an iron chinned, conditioned, come forward, willfull, tough as nails fighter like Lamotta is a bitch to deal with no matter what his skill level. Look at the shots SRR (a very hard puncher) put on him without buckling him. On top of that, SRR beat him 5 of 6 times.

I didnt say washed up, not at all. But not prime and coming off a long layoff like ODH..Having injuries like ODH. And the point I am trying to make that TSYU is a flat footed statue type fighter. I mean is a great flat footed fighter but the way you say hatton can do to floyd what he did to tysu is completely moronic to me b/c of the style of the fighter. The same clown that says that Tsyu was this and that say ODH was shot and past it fighting floyd. To me ODH, the wins were equal. Hatton didnt dominate tsyu...tsyu quite on his stool and could of won the fight still if he was not just done from fatigue. That was a close fight. REMEMBER THAT. It aint like hatton walked through him. Hatton went through hell and had to fight the fight of his life to win. While tsyu was the same old tsyu and was not as hungry...Give me a break. I NEVER SAY SHOT. I say OLD..past prime but far from shot...ODH was/is not shot..the same way.

The people who think that "power" and "chin" are the only two qualities that exist in boxing. Almost as bad are those who think that "skill" is a quantity ("he has more skill") without defining what the skill consists of.
This ends up creating a rock-paper-scissors relationship:
Skill > Chin
Chin > Power
Power > Skill (unless you also have Chin)
Power + Skill < Power + Chin
Skill + Chin > Power + Chin
...and so on...

It's difficult to determine this given that 168 is a truncated division--in the olden days it would have been part of lightheavyweight, so it has only a fraction of the past talent.
If we consider supermiddle as equivalent to any other division, then a win over Kessler and winning back the IBF will make him an indisputable ATG.

I'm not sure quantifying "skill" is as stupid as it is lazy. If I think Floyd will decision Hatton based on superior defence, timing, and footwork, why not save a few words and say he's the more skilled fighter?

That's true. I'm referring to those posters who say things like "Wlad is bigger, more powerful, and more skilled than Ali, so he'd beat him". They don't quantify how he's more skilled, though. No technical analysis. Sometimes, "skilled" becomes interchangeable with "good".
The worst example is the big-skilled-good-chin quadrangle. If he beat bigger fighters, he must be better than someone who beat smaller fighters, which means he's more skilled. He also got hit by fighters who are bigger (and who also must be more skilled, using the reasoning above), so he has a better chin, which makes him better, and so on.

SMW is currently superior to the MW division, does this help? The SMW crop is rather good, it was strong in the late 90's, weak through the early 2000's but strengthened up well recently.
Just analyse the fighters without a need for 'names', you'll see. It's one of my favourite divisions even if Calzaghe leaves, I don't feel the best at MW would have any success if they fought the best at SMW.
So it's absolutely equivalent to the other divisions, one of the best in boxing at the moment.

The comments that irk me are the people that roll out the excuses for fighters poor performances. The only ones that don't bother me are fighters taking fights on 2 or 3 day notice or fighting with medically verified injuries.
But when I hear someone say, "oh he didn't train seriously, or took them lightly, or he had a bad training camp," I cringe. Part of being a fighter is being ready on consistent basis. If a fighter loses focus and gets his ass knocked out and says he didn't train properly, I'm sorry but that just carries little weight with me. It really just says the fighter is inconsistent.
