Wilfredo Gomez @ 135 pounds

How would a prime wilfredo gomez do at 135? which of the fighter from the lightweight division would give him the toughest fight?

Gomez was best at 122, he couldn't have made the jump to lightweight and be effective IMHO, at any stage of his career. He was just too small for LW.

Gomez was shot then. In his prime, Gomez may be able to pick up some kind of strap depending on the opponent, but as birdog said, he would be too small for most of the best at 135.

I believe if memory serves me Gomez was considered at his peak in 81, when he went up to fight Sal Sanchez at 126, and got destroyed. At that time moving up to say 130 would bring Chacon, Edwards, Limon, though not in Sanchez class as boxers, just would be to big and tough. Forget 135.

The early 80's LW and jr LW were tough and loaded divisions. So no he wouldn't have had a chance going up another 5 or 10 lbs.

He just wasn't big enough

How can you deny it? Gomez was NOT a lightweight EVER!!! 135 is too much weight for the guy... Gomez was 126 for sanchez in 1981, and Sanchez alomost killed the poor vato..... How is Gomez gonna suddenly put on NINE pounds more and fight at 135 during his peak years??:huh

Gomez's prime ended after Sanchez beat the hell out of him. He was close to his prime going into that fight. Against Nelson in 1984 he was defintely on the slide.

In truth, Gomez' punch was really only wicked at 122 pounds. At 126, Gomez was NOT the same puncher.. Gomez beat the chit outta the limited Juan LaPorte in 1984 to take the WBC title at 126, but LaPorte stood up for all 12 rds and took his beating like a man... Then Azumah Nelson almost killed Gomez later that year to take Gomez' title belt away... Wilfredo Gomez went up to 130 and got some "Home Cooking" from the judges to ROB Rocky Lockridge of his title belt in 1985... That was Gomez' last great effort in the ring, despite not really winning the fight..... Again, last but not least, Alfredo Layne beat the piss outta Gomez in 1986, and that was it for Gomez..... 135 pounds? WTF??:nono

LaPorte relied too much on his right cross to pull him through. If and when he fought a good fighter, he'd often lay back on the ropes and make "Ear-Muffs" looking to counter with a bomb.... LaPorte often jerked-off hard in his BIG fights..... Juan LaPorte was good, but not great.... Though, very gutsy.... My last glimpse of J.L. in the ring was back in 1999 against Billy Costello.... Christ, that was ugly.... Costello won the decision.... Cheers........;)
