It means you come forward in a straight line, do your stuff, and move back in that same straight line. It means you are easy to trap in a corner, and easy to find after landing your punches. It also means your punches come from a predictable angle. The solution is lateral movement.

My bad, should have specified that. I did not mean upper body lateral movement, although that's also a very useful thing when looking for angles.

When you punch someone, the first thing they do is punch back, and they are gonna punch from where they got hit from usually.. This is why you dont go straight back, cause you put yourself on the end of their punches, which is when they are the strongest.

I'll rarely reference a pro fight for us to consider when working on our own game, but in this instance I just can't help myself.

Being a Pavlik fan, and after watching the Bhop/Pavlik fight, this to me is one seriously good example of what a lack of lateral movement and 'angles' can do to a fighter.

Kelly in his young age still hasn't developed the ability to go beyond power and skill, into a complete boxers ability to use all at his disposal. Bhop exposed this weakness, and showed his own experience and total boxing prowess with it.

The end result was a flustered Pavlik, throwing punches at a man who was not there, and getting hit by a person surrounding him on all sides.

As a fan of Pavlik, it was hard to watch.

As a fan of boxing, it was a thing of beauty.
