After that fight, did anyone complain about how Tommy used his jab to measure the finishing right hand? Don't get me wrong, this punch only expedited the obvious outcome, but unless Tommy's handspeed just created an illusion, that has to be one of the most illegal one-twos I've ever seen.

Im not too sure but i think the jab before the right hand was fine ,but what we witnessed there was a complete masterpiece of beautiful feints,a rapier like jab, tremendous left hooks to the body, cat like reflexes, excellent judgement of distance to keep away from pipinos offense, beautiful footwork, swaying back to avoid shots, superb agression, standing tall to maximise height and reach, super speed, vicious combos, capped with two of the greatest right hand laser guided missiles you could ever wish to see against an atg peak cuevas coming in with twelves consecutive defenses with 11 kos and known as the hardest welter hitter/left hooker of all times, and with the reputation of a rock for a chin.....
Every time i see this fight i am reminded of how awesome the hit man was at welter in his prime....
Couple this with his ability to outbox anyone at any weight he fought in......
Head to head tommy has a chance with anyone in history at welter,lt middle or even middle....
I dont think anyone could really complain about the outcome,i read in ring magazine that the towel was thrown in by his corner after the knockdown because one of his corner thought pipino could be KILLED if it continued...
Can anyone think of a better performance against a fellow atg? Especially in a guys first world title fight...
I dont know who was favourite for this fight but i dont think anyone thought it would be this one-sided a blow out.....
Anyway,i guess you could say im impressed by this performance.....:smoke

I don't think I can rate Hearns as highly as you, especially at the bigger weights, but no question he was awesome at 147, and especially in this fight. I love the straightness of his punches. Almost like he's drawing a line directly from his eyes to the target. Amazing.
One of my dream matchups is Hearns vs. McClellan at 160. G-Man was another guy who carried a lot of power at the end of his punch.

Right on all counts, and I sure don't mean to ignore what was an utter, utter masterpiece of a performance. His punches were so fluid up to the point of the KO that the jab/ hand in the face caught my attention, probably more than it should have.
If Cuevas' corner was glad to see him make it out alive, there really is no discussion is there?

Apollo, thanks for posting that. It's one of my top two favorite knockouts, along with Joe Louis destroying Schmeling.
I don't remember any complaints over how Tommy used his left before the knockout. Most of the talk was over how Cuevas twisted after getting hit with that big right hand.

It is also my favorite KO. Cuevas was a noodle. Hearns was great in that fight.

I think a more egregious illegal KO punch was when Lewis held Michael Grant's head down from behind his neck and then unleashed a leathel uppercut.

It's pretty common, although illegal, for guys to do the "size em up with the left" before throwing the left hand.
