Best top prospects, or top best prospects?

Nathan Cleverly looks good at light-heavy. Recently disposed of the tough Tony Oakey via a comfortable decision to become the Commonwealth champion in only his 13th fight. Not much power, but a good boxer.

Ola Afolabi, look out for him at cruiserweight. He's 28, so time is getting on, but he's only had 17 pro fights. His record looks a bit mediocre, but he's started off fighting good competition. So far his only defeat was early on to Allan Green. He recently stopped Eric Fields, a highly rated 11-0 prospect Stateside.

Craig McEwan, who fights at middleweight. He's 12-0, and combines solid power with very good skills. He's dropping down to 154, and faces a very tough fight next against Alfredo Angulo, but if he comes through he would get a huge publicity boost.

John Murray obviously is a very good prospect at lightweight aswell. He's benefited from fighting Stateside, where he's been in with tough journeymen and come through, so he's a lot more prepared than Amir Khan. If not as offensively skilled as Khan, he's much more durable. Recently disposed of Lee Meager to become the British champion.

I'll include Kevin Mitchell, because he hits hard, has a good chin and a lot of heart. He needs to improve his defence and learn to box a bit more, but if he can do that he can do pretty well in a now weak division with all the big names like Pacquiao, Guzman and Marquez moving up.

Paul Appleby looks decent. He decisiond a tough John Simpson in only his 12th pro fight to become the British featherweight champ, and takes on the experienced but fading Esham Pickering next. That should give us an indication of where he's going. He needs to improve all-round, but at only 21 he has time to do so, and he's benefiting from stepping up in class early to find out what level he's at.

good post, Cleverly is only 21 too I think, and still studying a maths degree in university if I remember correctly! I've only seen the Oakey fight but I liked the look of him and the Sky pundits were getting excited too. Over excited though according to most here it seems as he got a bashing after that fight which I didn't think was fair.

None of them are top prospects, they are prospects that are most likely European level and MAYBE fringe world class if they improve.

The best are Appleby, Brook, Mitchell and Murray.

If you want a wildcard look out for Denton Vassell.

Depends at what stage you consider prospects, but the world champs class of 2001 is too far gone I suppose - Haye is obvious, and Froch will be a world champ. just think he might not have the hunger, and def not the defence.
Does Mitchell count? Seems to far down the line - he will clearly be a world titlecontender. Now sure he'll win a title, but he'll be very comfortably a consensus top five-to-10 lightweight. Murray, maybe. not sure about the power. Khan, probably. Horrendous chin, but incredible talent and, I suspect, desire.

If gavin goes pro, he'll be the am to adapt best, I'm sure.

I like Cleverly, but those higher weights demand power - remember, Calzaghe is hardly a light puncher, but is rightly considered so because he only kos around 50% at tile level (also hand issues, of course). Cleverly doesn't even compare.

I think we're really lacking after that glory generation of Hatton, Froch and Haye.

Even though I think Angulo will win, it's a poor choice for him too. McEwan isn't proven at all, but he brings an 0 on the end of his record, so he will be dangerous.

It's high risk/low reward for both guys. I see Angulo stopping McEwan though.

It's not awful for us the fans though. Two highly touted unbeaten prospects with differing styles, just what we want to see.

It's a shame this is considered a bad career move nowadays. So what if you lose that sort of fight...really. Peoples reaction to defeat is the problem.

Agree about Mcewan and Appleby,
winner of Mcallister and Murray should take it on,
i realise Napa has been about but looks ready to go on from now,
Cleverly looked good in last fight but will hold judgement.

just a wild one but Ancliff, if he sorts his style out.

Brian Rose and Jack Arnfield.... Martin Murray, Richard Goddings and the other kid Vip have got whose name escapes me are better then any of frank ******s new signings. Martin Murray is scary good, Rose beat Vassell easily in the Amateurs and Arnfield hasn't put a foot wrong so far as a pro. These lads need some TV time on Setanta or Sky.

Heard some really good things about Arnfield and Martin Murray, and to a lesser extent a lot of the other young lads up there. Dont think i've seen anything of either though.

Theres a few good prospects round this area wolverhampton/black country but most are still in the very infancy of their career, lads like Russell Colley, Jamie Ball, Rob Hunt, Rob Kenney. Dean Harrison looks to be the main one, although he did lose his last fight for the english title against Scott Haywood, he took the fight at late notice, was away from home and many people thought he won, look to him to bounce back.

I think Rose and Arnfield are good enough to one day be Brit champs. Murray when he opens up is superb apparently the three of them each cancel te other out in sparring which is a good sign that they are all heading for the same level. Really good fighters and exciting to watch. Young amateur Scott Cardle is an awesome prospect too but I don't think we'll see him turn pro until after the olympics.

A young kid called Jordan Burbeck, only 8 years old - fought a 10 year old in Muay Thai and forced the kids mum to rescue her son

He can't kick to save his life and is taking up Queensbury Rules.

In about ten years time his uncle will sign up to ESB ala Olu and start claiming that the likes of Paul Appleby are running away like little bitches.
