In very high regard by more than a few of boxings behind the scene guys.

Charley Rose ranked him at #6 all time at Welter.

Fleischer had him at #8 for Welter.

Goldman, #8.

It's just a contrast to how he's perceived here, where he tops a lot of peoples P4P lists, none the less welter ones.

Have people come to appreciate him more with age? Do the older intellectual "elite" of the sport have it wrong?

the fact that he is even that high as ww is amazing-he was probably at his best at fetherweight or lightweight- I think he was probably no. 1 at featherweight and would have even given duran lots of trouble at lw

Maybe because there are so many great welters...
