I'm very curious about Steve Robinson.I've heard people say he was very slick and strong boxer while others say he would just wear down his opponents through his strength.
They say that Mcmillan was an injured boxer going into his bout with Robinson and if Mcmillan was 100% healthy he would have won.
They say Hodskinson laid off for too long before facing Robinson.
And some say Meckenzie wasn't in top form when he fought Robinson.
Are these valid points or excuses because Robinson wasn't favored in these bouts?

i think he is an inspiratoin...his abilty to move jab slug and slick opponants was amazing...i feel he is a great british fighter with a high rating, who was a journeyman and advanced to a champion.
he was just to open to get his his defence was good but he would get hit he didnt slug but he didnt box he did everything right but nothin special which is a shame becuase im sure he could of gone onto greeat things

I agree. The famous phone call during the middle of his mums pie and mash will live forever in british boxing folklore.

What phone call?
The call that offered him the chance to fight for the WBO title at 48 hours notice.

Yep, Steve Robinson's story is a great one. He's such a nice bloke too. I have no idea how the WBO sanctioned the bout against Davison because Robinson was a complete journyman and at 2 days notice. But that said, the transformation from Robinson the journeyman to Robinson the WBO champ was unbelievable. That belt was the making of Steve Robinson.

Good champion and great for the WBO and the sport of boxing at the time. In the documentary tape I have, it said that he was the worlds highest paid featherweight. Frank ****** and the WBO ending the success when he was forced to fight Hamed in Cardiff. Wasn't it Hameds' first fight at Featherweight?
I wonder if we will be saying the same thing about Gavin Rees in a few years.

I watched the Robinson-Davison fight on the telly, quite something to see him knock Davison about like that. That he went on to defend his title so many times was even more surprising, it is an inspirational story and one I always think of when we get these 'last minute challenger' types.
I've never seen Robinson-Hamed though.

I've never seen Robinson-Hamed though.it was a good fight but hamed was too quick agile and and just made the pure boxer do things to catch him which left openings...typical hamed win to unorthodox for the orthodox fighter.robinson won some rounds with his left right left right walking combo but hamed was by far the classier fighter that night

that was one of Hameds best performances
I am pretty sure there are highlights of it on youtube....worth watching.

Fair play to Steve Robinson, seem's to be a great bloke full of heart. Remember John Davison was a hard and excellent boxer another guy who could have went even further.

One of my favourites.
Tons of heart, I was at that fight when N*Z tormented him and showed no class.
That's what really put me off the prick

I was a big Robinson fan, beat good British competition before losing to a young and motivated Hamed. He lost to England's best, and though it pains me to say it he would probably have lost to Scott Harrison if they were around at the same time, but it would have been a cracking fight.

Davision was being groomed for big things until the Robinson fight.

Good domestic fighter.... Very lucky to be a world champion but I would describe him as very strong European class. Distinct lack of world class victories- but fabulous domestic ones. He rebounded from the Hamed loss incredibly well and almost navigated himself into a position for a rematch. Gr8 domestic fighter and should be extremely proud of his achievements.

I always liked Robinson. Great story and a very likeable champion. I always hoped he'd get another shot at a title but it never happened. I always enjoyed watching him fight and so did a lot of other people which is why he was the highest paid featherweight until Hamed moved up. Always in great condition, great workrate and an excellent body puncher.

Hamed would never have beaten Barrera. I still take pleasure form him getting beaten.
Here here! Arrogant, jug-eared bastard.

i have to agree with a lot on here, he was a good champion that came from nowhere, and he was an exceptionatley fit guy, i heard he used to run marathons also, dont know if thats true, read it somewhere!!!!

Robinson was a decent fighter, sounds to me like most here hadnt seen much or any of him before the Hamed fight.

I doubt that Dunk... he seemingly used to fight every other week at 8pm on ITV (when they only had the one channel!) in Cardiff Ice Rink. I think he used to use that arena more than the ice hockey team at some point in a bit of a boom time for British boxing. People even knew who Nicky Piper was at the time!

Isn't he a Sky pundit? I wonder how he got that job he couldn't have been a boxer, he seems far too intelligent.

Steve Robinson was one of my favourite fighters ever. Like someone else has already stated, Robinson genuinely grew into his WBO belt, and was on a terrific upward curve before being pitched in with the beast that was Hamed. I do hate Hamed, ever so much....

What most have said on here about Robinson is spot on, he had his chance at incredibly short notice, did a job and defended it really well and was always 150 %.
Was a humble, down to earth bloke who's life was turned round because of that one chance.
I watched the Hamed fight live and I Hamed put on a masterclass, even through all the stick he was having off the crowd he was on an entirely different level.
Watching that clip of Hamed, god his footwork and agility was unbelievable even though he was a cocky twat!

yes hamed was a cocky twat, i admired his boxing skills but as a person at that time he was a wanker.

I haven't got Sky now, but I used to like the way Piper would slap down Johnny Nelson's views.

Nelson achieved more, but Piper and McCrory always interrupt him and rubbish his views - funny as fuck.
