Godfrey Destroys Cora in 2nd round TKO

(Matt Godfrey, seen on right, fighting in the southpaw stance in the 1st round against Felix Cora Jr.) 06.04.07 - By Jeff Bastasini: Unbeaten Cruiserweight prospect Matt Godfrey (15-0, 9 KOs) dominated an overmatched Felix Cora Jr. (18-2-2, 9 KO’s), stopping him in the 2nd round by TKO, on Friday night at the Mohegan Sun Casino, in Uncasville, Connecticut. Godfrey, a fighter known for his excellent power and ring smarts, switched to southpaw in the 1st round to throw off the timing of Cora, a natural southpaw. Surprisingly, the tactic worked, as Godfrey was able to land well in the 1st round, mostly using a powerful left hook as his main weapon to due damage.

In round two, Godfrey switched back to a right handed boxing stance, and immediately began to land left-right combinations. Cora had his moments, though, in the round, landing several left hooks, but nothing big enough to stall Godfrey's progress for long.

However, Godfrey’s power and constant workrate was ultimately the telling factor, for late in the round, with Cora at close range, Godfrey connected with another left-right combination that sent Cora down to the canvas. He beat the count, but was in a bad way, seemingly out of it. Godfrey, who seeing that Cora was in no position to defend himself, immediately went after him and landed a huge bombardment of punches that caused the referee to step in and halt the bout.
